Pune, January 12: The most awaited and highly respected Film Festival of the year, Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) kick started today. The festival was inaugurated at the hands of Dr. Mohan Agashe, Arvind and Prakash Chaphalkar and Dr. Jabbar Patel at City Pride Multiplex, Kothrud in the city. The inauguration started with a beautiful Flamenco dance performance by Spanish Artist Monica who was accompanied by Carlos Blanco on Spanish Guitar and Subrata De on Sitar. This performance was a celebration of the 60 years of Indo-Spain relationship. This was followed by the screening of the opening film ‘Thank you for Bombing’, a film from Austria directed by ‘Barbara Eder’.
This is the 15th edition of this festival which is organized jointly by Pune Film Foundation and the Government of Maharashtra.Dr. Jabbar Patel, Festival Director of PIFF, Ravi Gupta, Secretary – PIFF and Samar Nakhate, Creative Director – PIFF were also present on this occasion.
Aparna Sen, noted Filmmaker, Screenwriter and Actor and Seema Deo, veteran film Actor known for her work in Hindi and Marathi cinema were honored today with the ‘PIFF Distinguished Award’ for their outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema. Seema Deo dedicated this award to her beloved mother and to her Guru Late Raja Parnajape who supported her throughout her career. Aparna Sen paid tribute to great actor Late Om Puri by dedicating this award to him.
While the prestigious ‘S. D. Burman International Award for Creative Sound and Music’ was presented to Tabla Maestro, Composer and Percussionist Ustad Zakir Hussain this year. Speaking on the occasion, Zakir Hussain said, “I am really honored to receive this award in the name of great musician S.D. Burman and I thank PIFF team for this.”
Continuing the tradition of roping in Global Cinema Experts as the Jury, this year’s jury at PIFF includes Aparna Sen (India), Prof Jerzy Stuhr (Poland), Goran Paskaljevic (Serbia), Jorge Arriagada (Chile), Jens Fischer (Sweden), Gowri Ramnarayan (India), Bennet Rathnayake (Sri Lanka) and Narges Abyer (Iran). All the eminent juries were also present at the inauguration ceremony today.
Titled as ‘Om Puri Rangmanch’, this year PIFF Bazaar stage would be dedicated to renowned actor Om Puri who passed away recently. This will be a tribute to his contribution to Indian Cinema. A special session by Naseeruddin Shah and Anil Zankar titled as ‘Knowing Om Puri – Actor, Human Being and Legend’ will also be scheduled at PIFF bazaar on January 17th at 3.00pm.The Bazaar will also host programs like Madhyantar, Poetry, Workshops, Seminars, Entertainment activities and many other at Dadasaheb Phalke Pavilion.
This year PIFF is being held between January 12th and 19th, 2017 in 13 screens at 8 venues located in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The venues include City Pride Kothrud, City Pride Satara Road, City Pride R-Deccan, Mangala Multiplex, Inox Bund Garden Road, National Films Archives of India (NFAI) and Carnival Cinemas Chinchwad.
