Mumbai — The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai joins the American School of Bombay (ASB) in welcoming the announcement that ASB’s Elementary School principal, John Smithies, has been selected to receive the National Distinguished Principal Award.
Sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), this award is given by United States Department of State, Office of Overseas Schools, recognizing two principals from international schools across the globe and one principal from each of the U.S. states. Founded in 1921, NAESP is a U.S.-based professional organization serving school principals and other education leaders throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas; it represents principals who serve 33 million children, in grades pre-kindergarten through 8, across the world.
“We speak often about the value of education, at the primary, secondary, and collegiate levels,” said U.S Consul General Edgard Kagan. “Clearly, John Smithies instills this value and is a tremendous asset to every child at ASB. It is especially exciting to me to see a Mumbai-based school being recognized on such an important global stage.”
In his role as the chairman of the Board of Directors at ASB, Kagan continued, “School principals face tremendous challenges in leading for the 21st century. John has worked very hard to create an elementary school that is developmentally responsive to young learners while inspiring and challenging them, and I could not be more delighted that the State Department has recognized his superlative work here in Mumbai as the best in the world.”
Mr. Smithies will travel to the United States for the award ceremony in October, where he will be feted at a reception at the U.S. Department of State’s Harry S. Truman building and at a gala event at which he will be presented with a plaque and honored by dignitaries from the U.S. Department of Education.
A private, co-educational day school for pre-K to Grade 12, ASB operates in association with the Consulate of the United States. ASB is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization. With “inquiry” at the core of its educational program, ASB serves approximately 750 students representing more than 50 nationalities and more than 30 languages.
