Pune: A rally to raise awareness on cleanliness has been organised by Alkem Laboratories in association with Indian Medical Association at at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden, JM Road on Saturday 23 May at 9.30 am . This drive is a part of pan India program across 135 cities in India . The message of the campaign is “A Clean India will deliver a Healthy India”.
Improper sanitation, unhygienic habits, unclean surroundings, improper disposal of waste and open defecation all drastically increase the prevalence of disease in our country. It is deplorable that over 3 lakh children die before the age of 3 every year of diarrheal illnesses. This situation is preventable and the medical fraternity can play a great role in educating the masses about the inextricable relationship between sanitation and health. It is a fact that over 50% of the common diseases such as Malaria, Cholera, Diarrhea, Typhoid, Gastroenteritis can be prevented just by keeping one’s environment clean; and the resultant burden on the health budget can also be reduced.
Dr. Avinash Bhutkar, President, Pune Branch, Indian Medical Association, said, “The Indian Medical Association believes that awareness is the first step to disease prevention and is proud to be associated with this movement. As supporters of this campaign, we will be spreading awareness about this cause to all 2.5 lakh members of IMA across 1700 branches and asking them to join the movement. We will also be making them aware about how just by educating their patients about basic hygiene and sanitation, a host of diseases can be eliminated. It is the responsibility of each and every individual to reduce the burden of environmental diseases. Small measures like safe household water storage, proper disposal of waste material, better hygienic measures, more judicious management and use of toxic substances at home and workplace can help us go a long way in keeping India clean and healthy”.
Dr. Jagdish Hiremath – Director Cath Lab at Ruby Hall Clinic, Dr. Shailaja Kale – Diabetologist, Kale Hospital and HOD, KEM Hospital and Dr. Suresh. N. Shinde, Senior Physician, Poona Hospital and Research Centre in a joint statement said, “A completely preventable disease, diarrhea is the second biggest cause of child death globally. It is estimated that over 3 lakh children succumb to the disease in India each year even before their third birthday. The reasons for this include unhygienic eating and food cooking habits, high prevalence of open defecation in the country and improper waste disposal. Healthy practices like hand washing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by over 40 per cent. This situation is preventable and the medical fraternity can play a great role in educating the masses about the inextricable relationship between sanitation and health.”
While the World Health Organization (WHO) pegs the average level of particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) in Delhi air which is considered to be one of the most polluted cities in the world at 153 mg per cubic meter, Pune is currently clocking 110 mg per cubic meter. Pollution levels in the city are rising to alarming levels with no possible solutions coming up for the issue of garbage burning. There are various diseases like chronic respiratory ailments, heart problems that get precipitated by an unclean environment. In fact, Diarrhea and respiratory infections are the number one cause for child deaths in India.
Surendranath P, Deputy General Manager, Alkem Laboratories said,. The message we are trying to take to the people is simple, that ‘A Clean Indian will deliver a healthy India’. We would like to use this platform to call on every individual to join us at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden, JM Road, Pune between 9:30 – 11am on Saturday 23rd May to help make Mission Clean India a reality”.
