Eibar vs. Real Madrid:
High on the champions league victory against PSG, Madrid must be looking to continue their good form in LaLiga as well. They would want to stay clear from Valencia as the Los Blancos have just a one point slender lead. Real has been in good form. They have managed to win five out of last six games that they have played suffering defeat just from Espanyol. For Real every game is important from here on as they would want to seal the champions league berth by finishing top four and rely on Champions league glory. For Eibar, their recent form has been shoddy, they just managed four points from the possible 15. The team is in the top 10 but has conceded more goals than they have netted.
Sevilla vs Valencia:
Both these teams are fighting a battle for the spot in the champions league for the next season. Valencia are currently ahead of Sevilla by a huge margin of eight points. Both the teams are in good form having won four out of five games they have played while Valencia has lost none and Sevilla lost just one. This is the most interesting game of this weekend as both teams are in good form and there is lot to gain. Sevilla meanwhile do have plenty of other things to focus on with a Copa del Rey final still come and the small matter of a Champions League trip to Old Trafford just three days after this one.
Barcelona and more specifically Leo Messi, largely put the theory to bed with a key 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid last weekend that the title race is still on. The Catalans now lead Diego Simeone’s side by 8 points at the top of La Liga and they can further cement their strong position with victory here. Malaga by contrast have also got 8 points on their mind as that’s the number of points they need to make up to claw themselves back to Levante, immediately above the relegation zone. However, even though is a ‘top vs bottom’ clash, we shouldn’t necessarily expect a cricket score. Barcelona will have one eye on their Champions League clash with Chelsea a few days later and may consider resting some players for this one, which may disrupt some of their attacking fluency.
Atleti’s title challenge ended in disappointing fashion last weekend when they slipped to a defeat against table toppers Barca. Perhaps the sheer volume of games had an effect but they should be fresher here having had a rare midweek off. The Europa League game is knocking on the door as that’s the only silverware they must be hoping for and Diego Simeone has demanded a strong showing so they at least go into that game with a win under their belts. He has a fully fit squad but must decide whether to rest players so to avoid injuries or not. The problem with doing that would be that his stars would have gone 3 full weeks without a match by the time the Madrid derby comes around which wouldn’t be ideal either. Therefore we may see a mix of first teamers and back-up players in the side that starts against Celta. Even at full strength with something to play for, this would be a tough game for Atleti and Celta has been playing some impressive football.
