Mumbai: There are just few films which have inspired Mahesh Bhatt and has spoken about it in recent past. But according to media reports and his status on twitter, which corroborates the same, Mahesh Bhatt has been overwhelmed with the Bengali film RAJKAHINI, directed by National Award winning director and his new protégé, Srijit Mukherji.
RAJKAHINI is an epic cinematic gem, directed by the celebrated director Srijit, and is based on the partition of Bengal through a new border that runs right through a brothel. He was also stunned with the performance of Rituparna Sengupta as ‘Begum Jaan’, and considered on par with Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and also Alia Bhat in Highway. He felt it was an iconic performance delivered by Rituparna Sengupta, and felt that she should more films like this in Bollywood.
Mahesh Bhatt posted on twitter “Srijit Mukherjee”s Raaj Kaahini, is a soul stirring tale told with fierce passion! It jolts u to the core. In the red rays of the rising sun, a sleeping India awakens, said Tagore. when you watch Srijit’s film RAJKAHINI, you feel that awakening. The most relevant film of the times we live in. I was moved to tears by this masterpiece. It is soul stirring tale and the Hindi audience will love it. The premise is thrilling and it moved me to the core. Rituparna mesmerizes you in Rajkahani. It is one of the bravest performances one has seen on the Indian screen. Like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil in their film and my daughter Alia in Highway, this film has one of the greatest performances by a woman-Rituparna Sengupta as Begum Jaan”
According to close sources, Mahesh Bhatt also called Ritu who was in Singapore, and said,”I couldn’t control myself calling you; I took your number from the director and called you. I had tears in my eyes in few scenes…you are such a talented actress; you should do movies like this. I would love to cast you in my films”
He further added “ Begum Jaan is my JAAN! Never saw a performance as brave as this. Rituparna is outstanding in RAJKAHINI”
Mahesh Bhatt will be working on a Hindi adaptation of the film, tentatively titled ‘LAKIR’ as a co-writer and creative director, with his new protégé Srijit (Who had earlier won the National Award for ‘ CHOTUSHKONE’ last year!
