news

Pune (Sept17, 2014): West Bengal Tourism with a host of new innovative initiatives is targeting the young travelers from Pune and Maharashtra. The Tourism Department of West Bengal is focusing on Golf Tourism along with Tea Tourism to make the sport accessible and affordable to all. AR Bardhan, Principal Secretary West Bengal Tourism was in Pune for a Road Show at The Pride Hotel on 12th September, 2014.

AR Bardhan said that Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra account for maximum tourists to West Bengal. The number of domestic travellers to West Bengal is 25 Million while the number of foreign tourists is about 1.25 million as of last calendar year (2013) . Most of the tourists coming from Maharashtra come for religious pilgrimage or visit to hill stations like Darjeeling.  With Durga Puja, the festival of lights, colour, culture and bonhomie, less than a month away, West Bengal Tourism is confident of a bumper response to this four day carnival. Apart from festivals the tourism department is focusing on Golf Tourism and Cruise Tours.  We have about 10 private Golf Courses in West Bengal which we are promoting. The idea is to make the sport affordable to the younger aspiring middle class. We also have a good infrastructure available for Cruise Tourism which includes 8 private boats and 4 state owned boats with a capacity of 25-30 each and includes all facilities including Air Conditioned Cabins. One can cruise from Kolkatta to Banaras along the river Ganges for a memorable religious tour or can travel on these boats to Sundarbans which is abundant in Wild life and Mangroves .This will particularly interest the student community as we offer customized study tours to imbibe the importance of conserving forests and environment. The New Government’s thrust to clean up river Ganga is going to boost our tourism activities . People can also enjoy Kolkatta city tour with state owned boats. Kolkatta remains the focal point of West Bengal with affordable accommodation infrastructure and eating joints.  West Bengal Tourism is also inviting hoteliers to set up properties in West Bengal by providing them land at proper prices and enhancing their business with proper infrastructure like roads.

Apart from attracting domestic tourists we are also promoting West Bengal internationally. After going to Germany, UK over the past few years , this year we will be promoting West Bengal in Portugal.
