Aphroze Cup 2014: Crème de la crème of Kolkata

Kolkata (Dec. 04, 2014): It was the most awaited event of the year as the crème de la crème of Kolkata came together to host the annual ‘Aphroze Cup 2014’ at Royal Kolkata Turf Club.The derby distance is about 1400 m. This grueling contest tests both the speed and stamina of top horses who wish to lay claim to the title.

Well known for its high style quotient and entertainment value The Aphroze Cup races are sought after not just by the swish set but also by the racing aficionados. And just like the previous years, this year too was a high-octane extravaganza as Kolkata’s stylish fashionistas trotted in with their brawny counterparts to cheer and bet on their favourite horses.

With their sights set on the race tracks, the glitterati swaggered in their best, as they mingled over classy cocktails and sumptuous horse d’oeuvres through the breezy afternoon. And to add to the thrill and excitement, the organizers gave away prizes to the various winners.

This year 10 thoroughbreds were competing, which was the 6th race of the day run at 3:30pm. The winning horse Amanduś trained by Patric Quinn & jockey Ashish D were equally ecstatic as the proud owner & successful entrepreneur Mr. Waahiid Ali Khan who had edorned a bespoke Asif Shah suit.

Said Mr. Waahiid A. Khan, “The Aphroze Cup, a grade 1 event, is the richest race in Kolkata. The rise in stake money has been steep over the years given the popularity of the event. We are extremely glad to have participated and won the very first time.”
