Pune: The year was 1996, When Padmashree Mrs. Lila Poonawalla took the first step towards educating and empowering academically outstanding girls belonging to the financially weaker section of the society.
What began with providing just Post Graduation Scholarships, has now gone to provide Under Graduate Scholarships in the Field of Engineering and Science (BSc BCA, BCS, Pharmacy & Nursing) in Pune & Amravati. Over the course of this 20 Year Journey, the Foundation has awarded over 8225 scholarships to over 4135 girls, which also includes the Lila Juniors (School Girls who get an Auto Scholarship from std 7th till the time they graduate).
As a part of training the Girls to be Productive Global Citizens, the Lila Poonawalla Foundation in collaboration with the ASHA Centre, UK started the Peace Ambassadors Program in the year 2008. Over 70 Lila Girls and Fellows have had the honour of being a Peace Ambassador. The 6th Batch of 25 Peace Ambassadors, selected after a stringent screening and interview process, will be taking flight on the 11th of August accompanied by Mr. & Mrs. Poonawalla. The young Peace Ambassadors are expected to return on 3rd of September
The main objective of this project is to provide the girls a global platform. Started as a noble endeavour to create world leaders, the Asha Foundation and LPF in a collaborative effort have organized a 3 week intensive training program for the 25 girls.
In this program the girls will have the opportunity to get trained in inter cultural relations, appreciation, learn inter-personal skills, communication, presentation & negotiation, learn about Social Leadership Skills and stress management. Followed by visits to the prestigious Oxford University, Bath (To understand in-depth about the Roman Empire), Madame Tussauds Wax Museum & Volunteer for at the home for the Handicapped. Apart from all the sight-seeing, the girls will also get a chance to visit the British Parliament. Here the girls will get an opportunity to see the workings of one of the world’s greatest parliament.
In short the young ladies will be returning as Young Peace Ambassadors who can contribute to the betterment of not only their lives, but that of their families, their communities, their city, their State and their Country.
