New Delhi: Delhi Police on Saturday refuted allegations made by the Congress, which said that they were working under the directions of Prime Minister Narenda Modi to eavesdrop on the party’s vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Rejecting claims of snooping on Rahul, City Police Commissioner(CP) B S Bassi said such surveys were conducted at the offices of all protected persons from time to time as part of prevention and detection of crime and to maintain law and order.
Adding that there was no attempt to malign Rahul’s image, the CP said, “It is routine activity, which is done to keep records of vulnerable personalities. The police also visited the residences of Veerappa Moily, L K Advani and K Chandrasekhar Rao among others. There was no malafide intent behind seeking details on Rahul,” he said. Bassi said that the police were not directed by the Prime Minister’s Office or the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) to visit Rahul’s residence and asserted that there was no political pressure on them.
“Two beat officers (ASI Shamsher Singh and Rameshwar Dayal) went to Rahul’s residence to seek details about him. Since they were not allowed to meet him directly, they contacted their office staff to obtain the required information,” Bassi said. The CP said that the officer got in touch with the Special Protection Group that guards Rahul’s residence, and had been directed to Rahul’s personal staff. He had presented a set of questions in a fixed proforma to the staff, who had told him that they would get back to them with the details.
According to Bassi, on the same day, Dayal went to the houses of other MPs– Krishan Pal Gujjar, Naresh Agarwal, Moily and Telengana Chief Minister Rao.
Beat officers are instructed to meet the staff of important people living in the area falling under their jurisdiction and keep personal information about them, he added.
Bassi said that the police keep details of all vulnerable leaders like Amit Shah, Sonia Gandhi, 7, Race Course Road (referring to Prime Minister).
“Such details are also important in many cases… for instance, if there is any protest outside the house of any important leader, cops may find it difficult to locate the house and identify their staff without any such information,” Bassi said.
