India’s 69th Republic Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Suryadatta National School, Bavdhan, on 26th January. The event began with flag hoisting by the Principal, Mrs. Sheila Oka, followed by a speech given by Aryan Biswas, a student of class VIII, in which he conveyed his thoughts on the significance of Republic Day, and the role and responsibilities of students both as individuals and citizens of this country.
In keeping with the school philosophy of imbibing compassion and teaching them to think beyond themselves…on this day, the students decided to bring forth the efforts of our farmers who toil day and night to ‘keep us happy and healthy’, as said by the students. To convey this, a map of India was created in the flag’s tricolor, with a variety of vegetables like potatoes, garlic, carrots, green peas, lemons and green chillies to create this map, to showcase the farmers’ efforts. Students across classes from Pre-Primary to class X, Teachers and the School had contributed these vegetables. After the show, all this produce was donated to the needy around, at the construction sites. The people were thrilled to receive such lovely vegetables, and looked forward to making their meals more wholesome, especially for their children.
Further, Pre-primary students dressed up as various leaders who were a part of the freedom movement, while the junior students enthralled all present as they showcased their fitness with a P.T. display, in which they did various exercises with hula hoop and dumb bells. The event ended with Lezim – a folkdance of Maharashtra, performed by the senior students in which they created various formations like the initials of the School – SNS, Ashok Chakra and the Indian Flag. The dhol, tasha and drums were all played by the students.
All in all, it was a constructive time spent and along with the beautiful performances, the day proved to be a good reminder to all present on the essence of being an Indian, the continuous efforts we all need to make as a society for our country.
