~ Artist Salika Virji
Art never goes out of style and a true artist can never stop being one. When you paint art takes you into a space that connects you with energy from a different dimension and helps you bring out something new and original. The word create means to be in the moment and is a collaboration between etheric planes and earthly ones to bring out something authentic and that has your personal signature on it.
When you buy a piece of art you buy a part of someones soul. My journey as a creative person is interesting on more levels that one. I am lucky to be an intuitive artist where I can be part of a flow that channels creative ideas into my work. Trained to be a textile and surface designer from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York I learnt how to work with various mediums and textures but making art has always been my first love. New York, the Mecca of learning where possibilities are endless has been deeply inspirational. The smell of coffee on open alleys and streets that run wide and the blue sky with energy so vivacious is an artist’s dream.
I chose to work with watercolours and ink and a few other mediums as it is very interesting to see what comes through. Always something new and fun evolves in the process of creating. As art is a spontaneous activity there can never be a dull moment and is full of colourful surprises .It helps anyone to snap into the ‘Now ‘with there being no chance for the mind to have place for any other thought. The past becomes redundant and the future does not matter. This is why Art is being used as a form of therapy. What cant be said through words can be expressed through art and is becoming popular all over the world. In schools too, waldorf education focuses on engaging children in artistic activities where both sides of their brain develop beautifully. Rudolph Steiner a channel and a mystic started the Waldorf education system which is extremely popular among parents who want to give their children a stress free education and help them highlight talents within them that they enjoy and can grow with.
Also being a very meditative activity it helps children connect to their inner selves early in life which helps them evolve into more confident and balanced people. Autistic centres too have been focusing on art immensely. Sai Connections founded by Kamini Lakhani promotes the idea of creating art and has been benefitting students who are autitistic. Some great talent is emerging out of these spaces and is being deeply encouraged.
Artezvous is a team of two very enterprising women named payal and Bindal shah who are very passionate about art and keep promoting new talent from time to time. The show that is presently on in Mumbai at Panscheel Plaza is a passion project and is art, centered around the five elements which gives artists a chance to express themselves using a wide range of mediums. The five elements are air, water, fire, earth and ether. Of these ether has been the most fascinating to me and if looked at closely ether comes first from all the elements. Ether or The divine space came into being after which came air, from air comes fire and water has both elements of fire and air in it. Earth has all the elements present in it. So As an artist I chose to paint Ether. My Goal was to make sure it creates a sense of value to whoever was buying it.
The Mystic dance – This artwork is about sufis whirling to find the divine silence within themselves which is ether. The round circle on the right depicts a mandala which means the entire universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism. The sufi on the right carries the mandala from beneath which is being taken to higher realms by the phoenix bird popularly known as Huma which is coincidently ‘ Avtaar Meher Babas’ name as well . The five elements as we know reside inside each individual and so it’s true when Lord Krishna said that the whole universe is inside us. We can create a universe we want to live in and making art is one of the most fantastic ways to do that.
I am driven to paint artwork that creates positivity and I truly believe there is a sufi inside each one of us.
The show has a total of 15 artists and is on from the 25th to the 9th of December 2018. In the heart Of Mumbai city. The artwork will be in this gallery for two months after that.
