825 Girls Ready to Transform Their Lives!
Pune, Monday,November 7, 2016: Cheers and tears of joy followed by the applause of proud parents and audiences. Such was the sight, one could witness at the recently concluded Lila Poonawalla Foundation UG-PG Scholarship Award Functions, for girls studying in institutes in Pune District. The function was held at S.G Barve Hall, Alpa Bachat Bhavan, spanning over the weekend i.e. 5th and 6th November, 2016, for the new batch of Lila Girls and Lila Fellows. With this addition the number of girls supported by The Foundation in its 20 years journey has gone over 5,500 girls.
During the course of the 2 days, the Foundation awarded scholarships in Science, Engineering, Direct 2nd Yr Engineering, Pharmacy, Diploma in Engineering, Nursing and Post Graduation.
Wanting to give every girl the recognition, she deserves the Foundation had not 1 but 3 award functions, with 3 noted academicians and corporate as the chief guests.
On this occasion, Padmashri Lila Poonawalla, Chairperson of LPF, began her speech by talking about the contribution, these girls will be making to the economy, assuming each of my 5,500 girls, even work for 15 yrs each and they can contribute more than 2,500 crores to the economy. She concluded her speech by thanking both National and International partners and individual well wishers, without whom LPF would not have been able to support and empower so many clever but economically challenged girls. She also thanked the Board of trustees and all the Panel members for their hard work. The award function was made all the more special, thank to the presence of Mr. Patrick Obonyo (Project Manager and Mr. Nikhil Kaushal (Program Controller) from IKEA Foundation, LPF’s main partners. A special thanks went to Mr. Firoz Poonawalla for always being there to support her in this very rewarding task.
The Chief Guest for the 5th of November, morning function, Prof. Gade stressed upon the ripple effect, educating a girl can create within her family, the society she lives in and the country at large.
The Chief Guest for the 5th of November, afternoon function, Mr. Minocher Patel (Noted Corporate Trainer, Founder & Director, Ecole Solitaire) spoke about the need of educating more and more girls so that they can be confident and independent both mentally as well as financially.
The Chief Guest for the 6th of November Function, Mr. Nitinbhai Desai (Chairman & Managing Director Desai Brothers Ltd and an long term Partner of LPF) candidly encouraged the girls not to let anyone stand in the way of achieving their dreams. He concluded by urging the girls to attend the Training Programs, arranged by LPF, so that they too can become intelligent and independent like their Mom (Mrs. Lila Poonawalla).
