The incident occurred between 3 am and 4 am in the Sinhagad locality where fuel tubes of the vehicles – 84 of them were two-wheelers while the the rest were cars – in the parking lot of six housing societies were unplugged and then the vehicles were set ablaze.
25 motorbikes used by delivery boys of a pizza shop, situated in one of the buildings, were destroyed in the fire.
“The motive is not clear. It could be to spread panic,” he said police inspector B Kashid of Sinhgad police station.
Cops are now on the lookout for a person who was caught on CCTV cameras, setting the vehicles on fire.
One person has been detained in connection with the incident.
The police said that this similar incidents had taken place a few times in the last six months; fewer vehicles were damaged in those cases.
