New Delhi: Yesterday, Leocadia I. Zak, Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, visited an innovative technology pilot site of Idea Cellular, India’s third largest mobile telecommunications provider. Idea Cellular has been making tremendous progress in its efforts to utilize solar power and fuel cells to generate renewable energy to power its cellular towers. USTDA is proud of the role it has played to make this possible. Already, Idea has successfully commissioned solar hybrid methanol-based fuel cell systems just last month as an alternative to diesel power generation.
Idea Cellular has five pilot sites across India which rely on solar power, not grid connectivity. The sites provide reliable power to the telecom towers and serve as a cutting edge alternative which saves on power expenses and reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The pilot sites will operate for six months to produce sufficient data for analysis and potential future expansion.
On her site visit, Director Zak met with leadership from Idea Cellular and heard about the important role a number of U.S. companies have played making this advancement possible, including ICF International of Fairfax, Virginia and Ballard Power Systems of Bend, Oregon. USTDA’s core mission is to facilitate partnerships between U.S. industry and leaders overseas who are transforming their economies and Director Zak was pleased to see the progress born out of the Idea Cellular solar power pilot project.
Director Zak said: “As one of the leading telecom providers in India, Idea Cellular has made impressive progress towards their goal of relying more on solar power, which I enjoyed seeing on my site visit. It has been a pleasure partnering with them on a pilot demonstration and feasibility study which will serve as the foundation for making progress on their critical objectives.”
