PUNE: “All aspiring, budding musicians should learn to be patient, persevere and try to create their own identity and be original rather than banking on the film industry. The advent of OTT Platforms has changed the outlook of the music industry and is providing opportunities to everyone to showcase their skills,” said Padma Shri Shankar Mahadevan, singer and music composer.
He was speaking at an online conversation organized by FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) Pune Chapter Chairperson, Dr. Aneeta Sanas in presence of Natalie Sharma, member, and other committee members.
“We are going through a tough phase but one should introspect and make use of the time to create, innovate and step up their art form to be the best in the industry,” Shankar said.
According to him, the advent of the internet and digital music platforms has given artists more opportunities to launch themselves and promote their music.“Nowadays the artists don’t have to rely on music companies to help them launch their albums. By putting the music on the internet, you deal directly with the customers. If the internet is used properly then promoting music becomes easy. Once you connect with the audience and if your intentions are honest then they will listen to your music,” he said.
While speaking on his venture- ‘Shankar Mahadevan Academy’ who’s vision is to make the learning of all styles of Indian music easy and accessible to people across the world, Shankar said that the academy teaches Indian Classical Music to thousands of people in about 98 countries from various age groups and is the only music academy that operates 24×7.
“We are now also teaching music to children with autism and to the underprivileged and in Dharavi alone, we have over 1000 students learning Indian music. We are also raising funds for all struggling daily wage musicians who have lost their livelihood during the pandemic,” he said.
Speaking on Indian Classical Music, Mahadevan who has learned Karnatak music said, “Every music whether its folk, pop, rock or Bollywood its grammar is classical. All forms of music are derivatives of classical music, which is like a deep ocean.
