Pune: More than 25 career mentors from diverse fields from Pune and Mumbai gathered in Pune at Boat Club to find new innovative ways of mentoring school children and make them find right choices . Organised by Potter’s Earth a developmental coaching organization that works with various schools , the program sought to bring in innovative ways and techniques for the students of 9th- 12 th standard and help them find & follow careers in line with their unique strengths and passions .
Anamika Dasgupta Sharma, Founder of The Potter’s Earth said that amongst our unique offerings ConneXions is one of our key programs where we connect students to a large community of Career Mentors. These Career Mentors are professionals in respective careers, who do interactive sessions with students to explain what each career actually looks like, including both good and tough things about each career. This enables more informed decision-making. But while do so it is more important to bring the career mentors together to find a more holistic approach to mentoring program .
Lt General Sisir Sengupta (AVSM, VSM), Career Mentor for Armed Forces, said that many a times we forget that Career is a journey and not a destination , and this is where they falter .
Narayan Menon, Career Mentor for Engineering and Math, said that It is necessary to understand that students generally opt for what they think they can do well, but this might be different from what they actually like to do. So it is important to find a combination of passion as well as strengths.
Journalist Sagorika, Career Mentor for Journalism agreed, most of the students see glamour in film reporting but once they understand the challenges and perils , they find it difficult to continue . But already being in the job makes it difficult to change. So it is important to give them a full view of careers right at the start.
Sunil Mangwani, Career Mentor for Financial Services, said that it is necessary to glorify newer careers to invoke interest and passion in children and get them to understand that doctors and engineers are not the only professions in the world.
Anamika added that according to our study the top five professions of today didn’t even exist five years back and we don’t know what the top careers in the next five years will be .
One thing everybody stressed upon was brought out by Shefali Tewarri, Career Mentor for Teaching and Academics – that parents are the most important partners in career defining process and the get the above message out requires mentoring them as well.
