The rise of online services and other innovations means that we are not often short of things to do when we have a little bit of time to relax.
For example, we have a range of films and TV shows at our fingertips thanks to streaming services like Netflix, while high-quality video gaming action can be enjoyed on consoles, PC, mobile, and through services like Google Stadia.
However, what if you want to unwind with something a little more old-school or traditional? Well, did you realize that many classic pastimes have found a home in the digital age?
For example, one sector which has been totally transformed by the emergence of online platforms is the casino world, as the internet has opened up a whole host of new possibilities for brands that specialize in gambling experiences.
Sites tend to offer a wide selection of different games, with many getting a new lease of life in the online format. For instance, while slots and table games are common, some brands have even embraced online bingo and – perhaps most intriguingly – scratch cards. Betfair offers a range of scratch cards online and explains how the experience does not differ hugely from what many people will be used to. Players simply pay to get access to a ‘card’ and then discover whether the combination of hidden symbols gives them a win.
The impact that the shift online has had on casino gaming should not be underestimated, as the figures related to the industry are fairly staggering. According to a report published by Global Market Insights, the online gambling market was valued at around $55 billion in 2019. In addition, it is projected that its value will reach a massive $160 billion in just six years’ time.
However, gambling is not the only traditional pastime that has proven to be a big winner by heading online. Ludo might be synonymous with offline play too many, but a mobile app-based around the game has had lots of success in India this year.
As The Economic Times details, Gametion’s Ludo King has been downloaded around 300 million times since its launch in 2017, while it is also thought to have six million daily active users. Data from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform also revealed that the title was ranked seventh in terms of the most downloaded mobile games on Google Play in August.

Other classic board games which have notably received the mobile gaming treatment in recent years include Monopoly and Scrabble, while there are a host of apps based around experiences like chess too.
We all have so many entertainment options available to us these days, but sometimes it is fun to embrace a bit of nostalgia and try something a little more traditional.
The ideas mentioned above are just a few of the many old-school pastimes which can be found online and beyond, so take some time to discover an activity that is perfect for you. With so many different experiences being adapted in the digital age, it will be intriguing to see what comes next.
