Chicago IL: GOPIO Chicagoland NFP, A not- for- profit organization established in 2003 organized an exciting musical evening for the Indian community on December 4th, 2015 held at the Ashyana banquet hall in Downers Grove.
It was a well-attended event which started with a welcome address from the current president and board member, Dr Utpal Parekh. Mr. Jayant shah, the chairman introduced the board members and officers. GOPIO Chicagoland also presented recognition awards to physicians, Dr Ashraf Dabawala and Dr Madhumati Mehta for their contribution to Gujrati art and literature. They are both acclaimed poets and book authors who have received numerous prestigious awards in the field of Gujrati literature. Professor Mohan Garg, a GOPIO life member was also given a recognition award for his services to GOPIO.
The grand sponsor Mr Michael Jankowski of wealth planning network also addressed the audience. Mr Samir shah, treasurer and board member did the vote of thanks.
In his presentation about GOPIO Chicagoland NFP, Dr Parikh explained that the organization was incorporated and obtained IRS tax exempt status in 2003.the organization has been involved in PIO (people of Indian origin) related philanthropic activities for community education, healthcare services and support of Indian art and heritage.
Dr Parekh explained that locally the organization’s major emphasis is free educational talks for the PIO community on topics that are crowd sourced from its members and matched with good knowledgeable speakers on the topic. GOPIO till recently funded a maternal & child health elective in a healthcare setting in rural India for medical students from university of Illinois at Chicago.
Internationally the organization has provided funding to more than 30 major institutions in different parts of India. Some of major grantees include BMVSS Jaipur that provides the Jaipur limb to the physically handicapped, Geeta village orphanage in Kerala, Arihant hospital & research ctr. in Indore and GT Sheth orthopedic hosp. in Rajkot, Gujarat. At present it is funding Prem Ashram charitable trust in Karwar, Karnataka which establishes school for young girls in remote villages. PIO in us can send funding to projects in India thru GOPIO Chicagoland NFP.
The very entertaining musical event was conducted by the very articulate mc RJ Alka of radio-spice and was anchored by the versatile singing duo of Mrs. Kathakali Dasgupta and Mr Rajesh Chalam who sang hit old and new numbers to a live orchestra. They were well supported by guest singers, the talented Manmeet Kaur, Dr Imaad Shaikh, Dr Naresh Upadhyay and Dr Tapas Dasgupta. Kasturee Dasgupta and her troupe did excellent dance routines to hit songs. There was also mimicry by Sahil. The audience enjoyed the sumptuous dinner and danced till midnight. A raffle draw was also done.
As usual the energetic and youthful Asian Media USA Team did fantastic job to record every memorable moment along with Mrs. Vandana Jhingan of TV Asia. Young and old, all enjoyed the great musical event.
