New Delhi, February 18, 2019: IDBI Federal Life Insurance along with the organizers, NEB Sports today announced the leading Indian elite athletes’ field for the 4th edition of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon. The marathon will flag off from the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday, 24 February 2019. It is a National Marathon Championship, as recognized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
Leading the elite athlete contingent in the men’s category will be Bahadur Singh Dhoni from Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune. Dhoni is the winner of the Indira Marathon 2018, Allahabad with a timing of 2:19:13sec. He will face strong competition from fellow ASI, Pune runner, Rashpal Singh, runner-up of Indira Marathon 2018 with a timing of 2:19:19sec.
Another elite athlete is Karan Singh from BEG Army, Pune who is also in contention for a podium finish. He emerged as the second runners-up in the Indian category of the January-concluded Mumbai Marathon 2019, finishing the race in 2:20:10sec. He is also the winner of the Vasai Virar Mayor’s Marathon 2018, clocking a timing of 2:22:17sec.
The women elite athletes’ field will be led by Monika Raut from Maharashtra Railways who was the second runners-up of the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon 2018 by finishing the race in 2:55:02sec. Another title contender in this category will be Jyoti Gawte from Maharashtra. Gawte won the 2017 edition of the Mumbai Marathon and was also first runner-up of the IDBI Federal New Delhi Marathon 2018 with a timing of 2:50:12sec.
Another runner to watch out for in the women’s elite category will be Shyamali Sing from West Bengal who was the first runner-up at Mumbai Marathon 2017 with a timing of 3:08:41 sec.
In the half marathon men’s category, Shankar Man Thapa from ASI Pune is amongst the top runners. Thapa was second runners-up at Mumbai Marathon 2019 last month. Uttam Bhujal from Sikkim, Kanhiya from UP Police and Deepak Singh will also be gunning for glory at this National Marathon Championship.
The half marathon women’s category will be led by Nitu Singh, from Allahabad, UP who secured 3rd place in the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon 2017 by finishing in 1:27:11sec. Nitu will face tough competition from Sindhu Yadav from Uttarakhand, Ujala from Punjab and Arpita Saini from Muzaffarnagar, UP.
The elite athletes will be competing for total prize money of Rs. 11 lakhs. The top 5 elite athletes in the Full Marathon category (Men’s and Women’s respectively) and the top 3 elite athletes in the Half Marathon category (Men’s and Women’s respectively) will receive the prize money as per their ranking.
