Indian National Overseas Congress, USA strongly condemns the cowardly attack on former Union Minister and the Congress Party leader Anand Sharma on the campus of JNU by the goons of the ABVP, the student wing of the BJP.
According to the press reports, the attack took place some distance away from the place where the meeting was held at the varsity campus with the ABVP activists using “cover of the darkness”. Mr. Sharma said to have suffered cuts and bleeding on his left ear.
‘This attack is another illustration of growing intolerance in the country to the basic principles of a liberal democracy and the BJP-led Government seemed to have perfected the art of stifling dissent, shutting down debates especially on campuses and bringing sedition charges to silence any opposition’ said George Abraham, Chairman of the Indian National Overseas Congress, USA.
“ABVP is increasingly becoming a tool in the hands of the HRD ministry, under Smithi Irani, as it was implicated in the case of the suicide death of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student, on the University of Hyderabad campus. Instead of working to upgrade the quality of education in the academia, the ministry is apparently busy at work to impose a saffron agenda across the campuses and around the nation. There is no doubt then why any difference of opinion in an academic setting is now being framed as anti-national!” the statement continued.
INOC, USA requests the Modi government to take immediate action to provide security to those who advocate freedom and liberty, that is guaranteed under the constitution and bring violators to justice.
