PUNE: JSPM’s Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering has kept the continuity in learning for engineering students through various online tools including zoom, moodle, webinars, WhatsApp and other means of communications.
R.K Jain, Principal, RSCOE said at a time when social distancing is of paramount importance and lockdown announced, the online tools have emerged as a boon for various departments in the college to keep the students engaged. This is an important time as engineering students need to gear up their academic activities as well as prepare for placement and internships. Although these tools are known to us, the unprecedented times that we are witnessing have urged us to use them in a systematic and organized manner. It is also a challenging time for faculties as they have to make learning more interesting using their talent.
Akash Deshmukh, Student of Electrical department said our department is doing everything needed at this stage. Understanding the social distancing parameter, video lectures are being scheduled with the help of the ZOOM app. Whilst focusing on the academics of the current year, students of the 3rd-year Electrical department are also preparing for their placements which are ought to begin in July. Activities on a daily basis including problem-solving, TPC interaction and active WhatsApp communication are helping us a lot.
Vrushabh Kakkad, a student of the Information Technology department at RSCOE said that the tool that is most frequently used is Moodle for home assignment & Hackkerank for coding practice. Meeting & lectures are conducted on Zoom App with the timetable. All faculties are available online to help. For placement related work, Talentio Group & Face is working for Aptitude practice & Face has done remarkable work by starting the free online course as well.
The department heads had the challenge of putting up a program for students through online platforms in a systematic and seamless manner. While doing so they had to ensure that they use all their talent to make things interesting for students. Although the tools are known and used, the entire college learning being shifted online for a significant period is something new.
The faculty is managing their teaching-learning process under the current circumstances by providing notes, question Bank, PPT to students through MOODLE. After completion of the lecture through zoom, students are given assignments to be solved and conducting the Mcq test on the topic taught using MOODLE. The faculty is also evaluating assignments submitted by students and if any corrections than it is been communicated to students through WhatsApp or Zoom app. The students are also advised to watch Impartus lecture captured. Attendance of students is monitored during online lectures and GFM is taking care by calling the absent students. Video conferencing for project review are currently being used.
Heads of various departments at RSCOE informed that they initially conducted students meeting to understand their health and situation around. We are always in touch with students with different modes of ICT like google groups, Whatsapp, etc. Our In house Moodle has helped us to share lecture notes, presentations, question banks on every unit, reference materials like books, online resources NPTEL, Swayam, etc. Some students who are facing network issues while these lectures are conducted. So we have recorded all these lectures and shared with students through WhatsApp, Google groups and Google drive. MCQ tests are automatically evaluated and students are given feedback for wrong answers with justification. Sharing links of virtual labs for practical understanding, recording lectures for students with connectivity problems, online competitions, encouraging students for writing research papers and contributing to articles for college magazine is also helping a lot, they added.
