New Delhi: Over 100 Opposition MPs led by Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday marched from Parliament to the Rashtrapati Bhawan protesting against the Land Acquisition Bill.
The delegation submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee, a memorandum against the Land Bill which was passed last week in the Lok Sabha.
MPs and leaders from around 10 political parties including Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, CPI and CPI(M) participated in the protest march amid heavy security.
The Congress and other Opposition parties have been opposing the Land Acquisition Bill terming it as anti-farmer and pro-corporate.
“We are here to oppose Modi govt’s proposal on Land Bill 2013 and want President Pranab Mukherjee to intervene in the matter,” said Sonia Gandhi.
Addressing media outside Rashtrapati Bhawan, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav said, “Country farmers have made us independent, we cannot snatch their right.”
“This is going to be ‘aar-paar’ (do or die) battle; We have sounded the bugle for the war,” said Yadav.
Ex-PM Manmohan Singh was also a part of the march by the opposition leaders.
A large contingent of security personnel drawn from the Delhi Police and paramilitary forces was deployed in the area in riot gear.
Barricades were set up and water cannons were also placed on the route leading from Parliament to the President’s House, the route of the march.
The Lok Sabha had cleared the Bill last week and the government now faces its real test in the Rajya Sabha where it is in a minority.
Earlier, Congress on Monday staged a protest against the NDA government’s move to amend the land acquisition Act, and termed it “anti-farmer”.
Raising slogans such as “‘Kisan Virodhi Narendra Modi” against the Prime Minister, the party workers led by senior leaders Jairam Ramesh, Raj Babbar, Randeep Surjewala and Youth Congress leader Amrinder Singh Raja Brar held protest at Jantar Mantar. The foot-march against the proposed amendments had started on Friday from Bhatta-Parsaul village in Greater Noida and reached Rajghat Sunday night.
