Pune: With the opening of its School of Bioengineering Sciences & Research on Saturday, September 3, MIT Group of Institutions is going to add another feather in its cap. Ahead of the inauguration of the new varsity under MIT ADT University, Prof Dr Mangesh Karad, Secretary and Trustee, MIT Group of Institutions, spoke at length about his vision to make this college one of the finest institutions in the country.
While addressing the media to introduce the new college, Dr Karad said, “Bioengineering as a field came into existence few decades ago. However, it has gained momentum over the last decade, to help us discover new medicines, new technologies and new ways of managing human health by developing tools, software, devices and services.” This subject encompasses the principles of both science and engineering domains as there is an emphasis on creating new knowledge about the way things work, as well as the development of tools for public health. Healthcare services are being increasingly technology-driven and bioengineering is the key to the increasing number of applications.
Said Vinayak Ghaisas, Director, MIT School of Bioengineering, “The graduate/postgraduate programs are a great career choice for today’s youth who are interested in multidisciplinary fields. For those looking to achieving aptitude for both biology and engineering sciences, this subject is the easiest solution. “Students can later get into biomedical industry for designing and constructing devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and artificial kidneys as well as smart sensors for monitoring physiological parameters and so on,” added Ghaisas.
With the knowledge of this course, students can also be involved in biomedical instrumentation and computer based monitoring of patients in intensive care units of specialty hospitals or design new diagnostic procedures involving engineering analysis where direct parameter measurement is not feasible. Alternatively, they can work in the IT industry and employ their skills for mathematical and computational modeling of physiological systems, genomics, proteomics, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data, microarray and much more.
MIT School of Bioengineering Sciences and Research is a part of the newly established MIT Art, Design and Technology University, Loni Kalbhor, Pune. It’s offering B Tech (4 years) and integrated M Tech (5 years) for 10+2 students to cater to the growing demand of this field. The degree programs are open for students with either/or biology and mathematics background. All the courses have been designed in consultation with industries in various segments such as pharmaceuticals, medicine biotechnology, IT sector, biomedical devices companies, specialty hospitals etc. The course pedagogy is project based learning (PBL) and the super specialized courses include robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, molecular engineering, systems biology, biotransport, computational molecular biology, Sensors and IoT etc. The students can further select any of the three specializations offered viz. bioinformatics, biotechnology and biomedical engineering based on his/her aptitude within the overall major of bioengineering. Apart from this, several student development courses such as effective communication and human dynamics, entrepreneurship, economics for engineers have been included to inculcate financial training and enhance the overall personality development of the student.
