New Delhi: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues to compile cricket records. On Thursday, he became the first Indian captain to register 100 One Day International matches, after leading Men in Blue to a 109-run victory over Bangladesh in their 2015 ICC World Cup quarter-final match in Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Regarded as one of the best captains in the limited overs format, Dhoni is riding on a splendid spell leading the defending champions to 10 successive World Cup wins before the match. He reached the milestone of 100 wins in 178th ODI. The 33-year-old is also the first non-Australian to lead a national side to 100 wins in the 50 overs match.
Ricky Ponting with 165 ODI wins and Allan Border with 107 wins are ahead of Dhoni.
Thanks to a well-timed Rohit Sharma century, India set a target of 303 runs for the minnows, which proved enough for the two-time world champions to book a last-four place.
With the win, MS Dhoni’s team became the first ever side to take 70 wickets in seven consecutive World Cup games. Today’s quarter-final also helped India registered a record ninth knock-out win in ICC tournaments, which included the World T20 (2007), World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013) titles.
India won the treble in Dhoni’s leadership. The Jharkhand-born was elevated to Indian captaincy post in 2007, after making his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2004.
