Madurai: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has prescribed a new dress code for devotees entering temples governed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, which will be applicable from New Year’s Day.
While men can wear dhoti or pyjamas with a upper garment, for women it has to be a sari or a half-sari with blouse or churidar with duppatta. For children any fully covered dress will do, Justice S Vaidyanathan said.
The norm will be in place till the HR&CE board passes an appropriate order framing the dress code rules. Temples that are not under control of the HR&CE board should practice their traditional dress codes, the judge said.
He was issuing orders after a few devotees filed a writ petition seeking permission for Bharatanatyam and a dance programme in Shenbaga Vinayagar Temple from Akkiyampatti village in Marungapuri Taluk in Tiruchy district.
On November 20, the judge passed an interim order granting permission to conduct the cultural programme and also prescribed a dress code for devotees to attend the function.
