All about Poona Bass Kulture Presents: Curtain Blue (Drones EP Launch), OX7GEN, and Carius
• Main Artists : Curtain Blue, OX7GEN, and Carius
Curtain Blue, the solo project of Abhishek Bhatia – vocalist of the Delhi-based alternative rock band, The Circus – is set to release his debut EP ‘Drones’ on April 13. ‘Drones’, the four-track EP sees Abhishek strike a bravely venture into a weird, wonderful and unchartered territory of modern electronica where no Indian producer has really succeeded.
Since the launch of the project in 2013, Curtain Blue’s experimental electronica has caught the attention of fans and contemporaries alike, and ‘Drones’ is a product of that continuous exploration.
“I had been working on these songs for the past one year and they were ideas or experiments that I wanted to try out. There wasn’t a conscious sound that I had in mind, these songs just happened. The vibe of the tracks is almost eerie and I have tried to complement that with the music which is slightly melancholic,” says Abhishek.
Abhishek has over the past couple of seasons performed at a number of festivals in India, including Bacardi NH7 Weekender and the flagship edition of the Magnetic Fields Festival in Rajasthan in 2013, where Berlin/ Los Angeles-based producer Robot Koch saw him perform for the first time. Their initial meeting led to a musical collaboration between the two on Koch’s acclaimed ‘TSUKI’ EP, released via MONKEYTOWN Records earlier in 2015 where Curtain Blue featured on two songs, ‘Let Me’ and ‘Erase’.
On ‘Drones’, one can hear what might have impressed someone like Koch, who was voted the best electronic producer in Germany recently. Equal parts headphones listening and dance-floor friendly, ‘Drones’ features some confident music, skilfully produced with textural percussive elements and haunting vocals, making Curtain Blue a producer to watch out for this year.
There‘s no innate skill involved in quality drum & bass production beyond a surge of all nighters and dying city lights. Mumbai based producer, OX7GEN (Aditya Ashok) gladly resided in the undertow, as a self-taught producer & controller wizard with influences running deep – cue kingpins like Andy C, London Elektricity & Danny Byrd for the first wave; then expect a rising tide of original liquid/funk drum & bass.
In a little under two years, Aditya Ashok has managed to make his presence felt by earning slots at nearly every major festival in the subcontinent. Right from the beaches of Goa‘s SUNBURN festival to the hills of north India‘s Escape Festival as well as closing the Bacardi NH7 weekenders dub station stage for 2 years in a row, BASS Camp Festival and many more. During this journey, he‘s ended up supporting some of the biggest names in the international bass music scene including London Elektricity, KOAN Sound, Concord Dawn, Dub Phizix & Nymfo to name a few.
For the past two years, Pune based Carius has been pushing the unspoiled sounds of Drum & Bass from the UK scene. With a desire to stay ahead of times, Carius is constantly plunging deeper into the underground in order to bring out the most cutting edge sounds. His organic and experimental approach to DJing has left many bass-conscious heads happy and served to firmly establish himself as a torchbearer for Drum & Bass in Pune.
Finishing 2nd in the pan-India #SuperDryLiveSeries DJ competition and voted #2 in the Drum & Bass DJ by MyFavDJ.in at the MyFavAwards 2014 and 2015 has pushed Carius into the upper echelons of Drum & Bass artists in the country. As the Drum & Bass scene across India is slowly picking up, only the biggest things can be expected.
