Even if you are familiar with cricket, you might not know the particulars about the four different forms of professional cricket. Only avid cricket enthusiasts are familiar with all the changes and specifications that go into a particular cricket game.
The history of cricket is a long and complicated one, meaning that the game of cricket has had many changes over the years. These cricket styles differ from amateur cricket, so keep in mind that we will not talk about them. Let’s dive into the particulars of the four different forms of a cricket game.
First-class cricket is applied to domestic matches only, but players’ statistics from Test matches are included in the overall placement. It’s important to note that Test cricket is first-class cricket at an international level. First-class cricket is the form of professional cricket that has been active for the longest.
In a first-class match, you can see eleven players on each side, two innings apiece, and the duration of one cricket match is spread out over three days. If the game isn’t completed in the allocated time, it is considered a draw.
Test matches, matches between two Test nations, matches between ICC members, games from a Team’s national side, and first-class domestic from Test nations, are all considered first-class. For example, the European cricket series is part of first-class cricket.
ICC members are not familiar with the origin of the term first-class cricket, but it was officially accepted in 1947.
The other name for the limited-overs form of cricket is List A cricket. However, this form of cricket significantly differs from first-class cricket for several reasons. For example, the teams are allowed to play one inning each, instead of two. Moreover, there is a maximum number of overs per innings. Additionally, matches are not stretched out over three days, but one game is held for one day.
Interestingly, the form of limited overs or List A cricket can be adjusted to fit each nation’s conditions, meaning that many cricket nations have their own style of List A cricket.
List A cricket has officially been in the books since 2006, and it serves as a parallel to first-class cricket.
Twenty20 is not part of List A cricket, but a separate form of limited-overs cricket. As part of the limited-overs cricket, the teams have one inning each, while the maximum number of overs is 20 — as stated in the name.
The Twenty20 form is most prevalent in India, with the Indian Premier League being the most popular cricket event during the spring months. The IPL is the most-watched and attended cricket league in the world.
This form of cricket was formed in 2003, and it was devised as the third form of cricket.
T10 is the newest form of cricket and the one that has evolved the most in a short amount of time. T10 cricket was first introduced as a game of 50 overs, then cut to 20, and now to 10. As the name suggests, the teams play a maximum of ten overs, which is limited to 90 minutes.
This form of cricket is played in a round-robin format, which is followed by a semi-final and the final, consequently. In a case of a draw, the game comes to a final result based on Super Over.
