Pune: In these times of technology opening the doors of information and knowledge to everyone, the role of a teacher should also change and a teacher must go beyond passing on what he has learned or has read in books to add value to the understanding of the students, Dr S. B. Mujumdar, Founder Symbiosis said on Saturday.
He was speaking at Torchbearers: The Teachers’ Conference organized by Career counselling and advisory company, The Potter’s Earth at The Pride Hotel . Member of Parliament Anil Shirole , Potter’s Earth founders Anamika Dasgupta-Sharma and Saurabh Sharma were present on the occasion. The event marked the launch of a book titled ‘Future Ready!’ A guide for Parents and Teachers, authored by Saurabh Sharma
There was also a panel discussion that highlighted the need for teacher assessment and development across schools in India. The esteemed panelists ranged from various walks of education including Malati S Kalmadi, Secretary, Kannada Sangha, Brig. Rajiv Divekar (Retd.), Director, Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Sunil Mangwani, Director, FibForex and Anamika Dasgupta Sharma, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, The Potter’s Earth. It was moderated by Mita Banerjee, Journalist and Social worker.
A good teacher is one who teaches, explains, demonstrates by field experiences where necessary and most of all – inspires his students, Dr Mujumdar said, stressing that a teacher must feel proud about his profession. “Garv se kaho hum shikshak hain (say with pride you are a teacher),” Dr Mujumdar asserted.
“A good teacher should create ‘academic noise’ by encouraging exchange of thoughts and be open to questioning by the students, thereby ensuring that their education becomes a collaborative process,” Dr Mujumdar said.
Technology has made it possible for students to know beforehand the content part of education and thus the ‘delivery’ part in teaching has undergone change, with less reliance on chalk and blackboard, Dr Mujumdar said, adding that motivating the students to seek application of knowledge is now the true test of a teacher’s success.
Member of Parliament from Pune, Anil Shirole, who was the special guest for the function, said the teachers have to play the role to develop sensitive and active citizens as they shape the students at the school or college levels.
Earlier on in the function, there was a panel discussion on “Building teacher capability: the need for teacher development and assessment.” Dr Mujumdar also released a book “Future Ready” written by Mr Saurabh Sharma.
Anamika Dasgupta Sharma, Founder and CEO of The Potter’s Earth said, “We at The Potter’s Earth feel that student and youth development has to go hand in hand with teacher development because competent teachers create confident adults.”
