Pune: Organ donation as a concept is novel in India and more often than not, has met with a number of challenges. Although there is no dearth of awareness campaigns being conducted by both healthcare providers and the government, the rather large gap between the number of donors and receivers is still a harsh reality. In a bid to bridge this gap, Ruby Hall Clinic has taken up organ donation drive as it is moto for this year. Ruby Hall Clinic launched a dedicated liver transplant unit for liver transplant patients in the presence of actor-director-singer Subodh Bhave, Dr. Purvez Grant, Managing Trustee, Grant Medical Foundation and Mr. Bomi Bhote, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic. Ruby Hall is a pioneer in liver transplantation in pune, having done maximum number. of liver transplants (23). That makes it number 1 hospital doing liver transplants in pune and 3rd amongst all deceased donor liver transplant centres in Maharashtra.
Liver disease is on the rise in India and has now grown to become a serious issue. India stares at a low organ donation rate of less than one per million, as compared to eighteen per million in the developed world. Highlighting the need of both cadaveric and live donors, Ruby Hall Clinic showcased a short film “Phir Zindagi” a ZTCC Pune, & Praj foundation venture to spread awareness about this cause. Chief guest Subodh Bhave too stressed on the need to increase awareness about organ donation
tapping young minds at school level. This was then followed by a felicitation ceremony of liver transplant patients who have undergone the surgery at the hospital. A pioneer in the liver transplantation procedure, the medical institute has undertaken twenty-three cadaveric liver transplants in the last two years with a success rate of over eighty-five percent.
This newly launched four-bedded ICU unit is well-equipped to handle a wide spectrum of liver transplant patients. With a dedicated team of transplant surgeons, hepatologist, anesthesiologist, nurses, support staff & transplant coordinators to cater to patients right from diagnosis of the disease, evaluation for transplant, transplant surgery, recovery and a return to normal activities. Additionally, the department hosts a separate acute liver failure unit. Talking about the launch of the unit, Dr. Sheetal Dhadphale-Mahajani, Consultant Liver Transplant Physician & Incharge at Ruby Hall Clinic says, “For most people suffering from advanced liver diseases, a transplant is their only hope to survive. This unit is not only those who wish to protect their liver, but also for those suffering from any kind of liver diseases or even acute liver failure. With our team of multi-disciplinary specialists, we help patients not only to prolong, but also improve the quality of their lives.”
On this occasion, Mr. Bomi Bhote, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic says, “We believe in the power of medicine. An ambitious endeavor from its onset, this unit amalgamates unparalleled technological advances, the medical vision of our specialists as well as the compassionate care of our nurses while providing patients with a new lease of life. Lastly, I would like to also stress on the propagation of cadaveric donations. After all, the noblest way to depart is by gifting life to others.”
