Chennai, January 22, 2019: SaaSBooMi, Asia’s largest SaaS Conference for founders and by founders, saw over 400 founders of SaaS startups coming together for deep-dive sessions led by the SaaS veterans from Tamil Nadu. Some of the prominent speakers at SaaSBooMi included Krish Subramanian, Founder-Chargebee, Vinod Muthukrishnan, Founder- Cloud Cherry, Suresh Shankar, Founder- Crayon Data, Manav Garg of Eka Software and Ashwini Asokan, CEO & Founder of Mad Street Den.
In his opening keynote, Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu spoke on ‘Bootstrapping to a Billion Dollars in Value (Discovering Contextual Truth)’. Addressing emerging entrepreneurs starting SaaS businesses, he said, “While software development on the cloud is becoming cheaper and easier, finding paying customers is becoming difficult and harder. The only approach is to observe, analyze and experiment. We must target underserved or unserved, unsexy customers. They are in niche markets which large companies won’t care for.” Emphasizing on the need for long term success, he also spoke on how talent can create a substantial difference and serving the customers profitably and catering to their requirements in a niche way we can create a strong impact and grow the company.”
Speaking at the conference, Suresh Sambandam, Founder- OrangeScape said, “Quoting from the Startup Genome Project Report 2018, ‘An ecosystem should focus on a startup sector most closely related to its strongest traditional strengths relative to the global competition.’ We must ask ourselves what is the traditional strength of our country and how does it relate to global competition? India’s best bet and it’s trillion-dollar opportunity lies in SaaS. Over the last 30-40 years, due to the IT services boom, our country has built deep-domain expertise in basically every industry vertical. It is that expertise that needs to be productized to make India a global SaaS hub. Events like SaaSBooMi are just one step towards helping India replicate Chennai’s success in SaaS in other cities, and position itself as a leader in the global marketplace.”
Girish Mathrubootham, CEO of Freshworks, in his closing keynote spoke about building a global SaaS company from India. He said, “The SaaS ecosystem in India has been through a transformational journey and is definitely more robust now, with closer access to mentors, investors and industry peers. SaaSBooMi is a step towards bringing the community of entrepreneurs together under one roof. Like every fast-growing economy has its own strengths, our country’s strength lies in its talent that is well suited to position India as a global SaaS hub. We have everything it takes to make India a product nation; to do so we must let our imaginations soar and sell a technology vision that inspires to think beyond the current bounds of how we work and live.”
Shekhar Kirani, the Partner, Accel, said, “There is so much custom software out there that needs replacement with SaaS products, the global market for SaaS is almost bottomless. Now, with many of our SaaS startups demonstrating success globally, there is a strong foundation and knowledge in India. With more founders starting out SaaS companies, I am very excited about the next ten years of SaaS from India.”
