PUNE: Solar Decathlon is an international collegiate competition that held its first physical award ceremony in Delhi. The net-zero building challenge awards for 2021-22 were held in Taj Mahal Hotel in the presence of chief guest Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; Minister of State PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space.

Solar Decathlon India is conducted by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) and the Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE) under the aegis of the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF). It is a yearlong challenge among postgraduate and undergraduate students from Indian institutions to learn and design net-zero-energy-water, affordable, and resilient design solutions for real, live projects to combat Climate Change through the building sector. In this edition of Solar Decathlon India, 99 student teams comprising 1300+ students from 109 institutions guided by 165 mentors participated. The entries were evaluated on ten criteria: energy performance, water performance, resilience, affordability, innovation; scalability and market potential, health, architectural design, engineering and operations, and presentation.

An integrated team of students from SMEFs Brick school of architecture, Engineering students from Pimpri Chinchwad college of engineering, Project partners – ASEEM Foundation and Pune MAHA Metra along with Industry partners VK: e environmental Pune participated in two categories of the competition. The two finalist teams of the competition were Team Nest for construction workers and Team Arnima for single-family housing. Team Arnima won the single-family housing division with a cash prize of ₹40,000 and also bagged a chance to be incubated by IIHS. The teams also showcased their work in 3-minute-long movies where they told their stories and communicated the value proposition of their projects. Team Arnima won the best movie award 2022-23.

Solar Decathlon India announced this year’s winners through a virtual event earlier on May 7th and 8th 2022, and the felicitation ceremony was held physically on the 1st of July 2022. Out of the 6 finalist teams for the single-family housing division, Team Arnima from SMEFs Brick school of Architecture was awarded the first prize by Dr. Jitendra Singh and Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology.

They congratulated the participants and winners of Solar Decathlon India for taking up real, live-building projects and developing innovative solutions. Dr. Singh also emphasized the need for real estate developers, builders, industry, and academia to work together to pool and synergize their experience, expertise, and resources for the overall welfare of society. He recalled the Panchamrit climate action agenda presented by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at the COP26 meeting that sets a target for net-zero emissions by 2070.

Dr. Poorva Keskar, Principal SMEFs brick college of Architecture spearheaded the whole initiative with the aim of bringing innovation, building a culture of innovation, and giving an edge to the design studios further benefiting the building industry at large. The outcome was a collaborative effort of the SMEFs Brick School of Architecture’s Team of diverse Design and Construction faculties: Ar. Divya Mallavarappu and Ar. Vinita Lulla, backed up by immense support from the Director – Ms. Pooja Misal, Principal Dr. Poorva Keskar, and Academic Coordinator Ar. Manali Deshmukh.
