IIM, Indore emerges as the Champion among the
brightest minds of top B-Schools in India
~ MDI, Gurgaon bagged the 1st Runners-up position; Teams from IIM, Shillong and IIM, Calcutta shared the 2nd Runners-up position~
Kolkata, November 28, 2016: The Grand Finale of Steel-a-thon 2016 concluded on a thrilling note with IIM, Indore coming out triumphant as the champion of this edition. Steel-a-thon 2016 proved to be an arduous and intellectual marathon. The grand finale was closely contested between teams from 15 B-schools, who presented their business case studies to a jury comprising the senior management of Tata Steel led by Mr Suresh Dutt Tripathi, VP, HRM, Tata Steel, and Mr Peeyush Gupta, VP – Steel (Marketing & Sales), Tata Steel.
This year, Steel-a-thon witnessed a considerably higher participation compared with last year, with total participation of over 1000 teams (3095 students), up from last edition’s count of nearly 940 teams. IIM, Indore emerged as the Champion of Steel-a-thon 2016, MDI, Gurgaon emerged as the 1st Runners-up while the 2nd Runners-up position was shared by IIM, Calcutta and IIM, Shillong.
Tata Steel Initiated Steel-a-thon in 2014 to connect with the young minds from B-schools, and give them an opportunity to work on real-time challenges that are faced in the corporate world. Students from top-rated B-schools are invited to present their ‘Big Ideas’ to the management of Tata Steel. The presentation spanned across business verticals of HRM, Supply Chain Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Marketing and Sales as well as Strategy Planning.
The platform helps identify the best talent and plays a major part in the student’s professional life and is an ideal stepping stone to the corporate world.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Suresh Dutt Tripathi, Vice President, HRM, Tata Steel, said: “We are extremely delighted to organise the third edition of Steel-a-thon and we congratulate all the finalists who are champions in their own way. We are overwhelmed by the response from the top B-Schools of the country at Steel-a-thon, which witnessed the confluence of the best minds in management and helped us build a unique connect with them.” He further added: “In today’s world, the young minds are always looking for challenges and Steel-a-thon is the ideal platform to dwell on providing solutions to the challenges on a real-time basis. It’s an ideal win-win platform for both the fresh and brightest talent in management in and for the Company.”
In his address, Mr Peeyush Gupta, Vice President – Steel (Marketing & Sales), Tata Steel, said: “Steel-a-thon’s third edition in 2016 has received an overwhelming response from top 15 Business schools across the country. Tata Steel congratulates the top three winners, all the finalists and deeply appreciates the amazing work done by the students. He further added: “Steel-a-thon provides a unique opportunity to students to work on real-life problems over a two-month period while pursuing studies. The challenge also helps demystify the notion that the steel industry does not have challenging customer-facing issues to solve. The overall response to “Steel-a-thon” confirms that we are on the right track in connecting with the brightest business management minds of the country.”
The Champions walked away with a cash prize of Rs 250,000 and a trophy. The first and the second runners up teams were awarded cash prizes Rs 150,000 and Rs 100,000, respectively. Along with a direct entry to the prestigious grand finale, all campus winners received Rs 30,000 and a certificate.
The participants of Steel-a-thon benefited from the mentoring sessions with the senior management of Tata Steel which exemplifies the focus on quality and attention to detail. The platform will also groom these budding leaders for real-time business cases and apply their classroom knowledge on the practical front.
