PUNE: Global Indian International School (GIIS) Hadapsar and Balewadi campuses – both of which are signatories of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – celebrated Earth Day by sensitizing students on the conservation of the planet from pollution and deforestation among other major issues.
In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 as ‘International Mother Earth Day. According to the UN, International Mother Earth Day is celebrated as a reminder that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. “The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people.” Keeping this motto alive, students of the GMP section at GIIS Hadapsar campus planned activities such as recycling juice cartons/milk cartons into pots of plants. Students of Grade 2 made posters that will be displayed in schools to create awareness around maintaining cleanliness and green habitat.
At GIIS Balewadi campus, the students of Nursery, KG1, KG2, and Grade 1-2 were made aware of the significance of celebrating Earth Day and the steps that can be taken to save mother Earth to make a better future. The students participated in various activities like drawing Happy Earth, poster making, and slogan writing activity with great enthusiasm.
The teachers explained the concept of three Rs of Waste Management (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and how working together as a team can surely make our planet a better place to live The Earth Day celebrations were aimed to make students aware of the importance of conservation of mother earth, in a fun and interactive way.
On the occasion Mr. Rajiv Bansal, Director-Operations, Global Indian International School said,
“there is a need for our future generation to know the importance of Earth and at GIIS we encourage children to participate in activities pertaining to keeping the environment clean and green. Every year the world faces massive cyclones and natural disasters that disrupt the cycle of human life. If the future generation is prepared from today, they can make the world a better place to live.”
GIIS’ constant endeavor to deliver quality education to its students with a strong emphasis on enhancing their learning outcomes has been a crucial factor in the excellent performance showcased by its students. The school has SMART Campuses around the world, which use savvy technology and the latest infrastructure to impart an education that is relevant for the 21st century. This includes dedicated music studios, sports facilities, digital classrooms, blended learning frameworks, and data analytics for the best student performances.
GIIS has also signed the UN SDGs – 17 goals for a more sustainable future – in 2021. The school strives to encourage ideas of sustainable living among its students, and regularly holds events that will help students make meaningful contributions to reducing their carbon footprint and embracing more green initiatives.
