Pune: Symbiosis International (Deemed University) alongside FICCI FLO, Pune collaborated to hold an intellectually stimulating Literary Fest, Shabdotsav’18 on the 3rd and the 4th of February at the SIU Viman Nagar Campus, Pune, with an aim to celebrate conversations, ask questions and to bring people together.
The Chief Guests of the Inauguration Ceremony were Shri. Javed Akhtar, distinguished poet, lyricist and script writer and Shri. Babul Supriyo, Hon’ble Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Govt. of India.
Dr. S.B. Majumdar, Chancellor SIU felicitated the Chief Guests and inaugurated Shabdotsav’18. In his inaugural address, Dr. Majumdar stated, “Just like the genes and chromosomes, literature is also immortal, it is the foundation of civilization,” further emphasizing on the importance of the Literary Fest.
Babul Supriyo spoke about the dilemma politicians often face while addressing the audience in this era of having to be ‘politically correct,’ and was followed by an insightful and thought provoking address by Shri Javed Akhtar.
Javed Akhtar spoke about many themes, as he emphasized upon the need to follow dreams and about modernization, morals and women empowerment.
“Now Literature, what does it do? Why is such importance given to literature, poetry and art? Does it change you overnight? No, it does not. It’s not an Aspirin. It is rather like a vitamin. If you keep consuming literature, you gradually develop a sense of intellectualism and an aesthetic to appreciate beauty. This, hopefully, makes a person, a better person.” – Javed Akhtar.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by an interactive session ‘Tweet your Politics,” with Sambit Patra, Babul Supriyo, Mayank Gandhi, Muhhamad Khan moderated by Prashant Jha, entailing numerous debates amongst the panelists which was further followed by a book reading by Rishi Kapoor and Meena Iyer for their book, “Khullam Khulla,” moderated by Shantanu Chaudhuri. In this session, topics like nepotism and opportunities for new players in Bollywood were discussed.
“No news? Only Entertainment,” with Shekhar Gupta moderated by Triveni Mathur entailed insights about the media industry and the current trends within and was followed by another book reading for “Will You Still Love Me?” by Ravinder Singh.
The first day of Shabdotsav’18 concluded with an open-mic poetry performance by the students of Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, Pune.
