PARIS, FRANCE: The JSW Group marked Olympic Day with the inauguration of an exhibition that celebrates the life and legacy of Pierre de Coubertin, the Founder of the Olympic Movement, along with commemorating 100 years of India’s presence at the Games, in the host city of Paris, on Sunday.

Chairperson of the JSW Foundation, Mrs. Sangita Jindal, and Inspire Institute of Sport Founder, Parth Jindal were joined by President of the IOC, Mr. Thomas Bach, Minister of Culture, Madame Rachida Dati, Ambassador of India to the Republic of France, His Excellency Jawed Ashraf and the President of the Pierre de Coubertin Family Association, Mrs. Alexandra de Navacelle to open the exhibition that will be hosted at the Town Hall of the 7th Arrondissement, Paris, and will go on till the end of the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games in September.

Speaking on the occasion, Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of the JSW Foundation said, “JSW Group is pleased to support the curation of ‘100 Years of India at Olympics’ at the Genius of Sport exhibition in Paris. Through this unique Exhibition, we celebrate the life and legacy of Pierre De Coubertin and 100 years of India’s remarkable Olympic journey and success. We share Pierre De Coubertin’s vision and belief that Sports can change the world differently by transcending borders and bringing people together in the spirit of peace and friendship. The 2024 Olympics is an important milestone for JSW Group. We are proud to support this exhibition as well as Team India in Paris.  Through these efforts, we reiterate our commitment to foster and nurture the sporting culture and talent in India.”

The exhibition, in association with the Pierre de Coubertin Family Association, comprises a detailed walkthrough of India’s Olympic journey over the last century, the success the country has enjoyed in the past, and its recent resurgence with an eye on the future.

Parth Jindal, Founder of the Inspire Institute of Sport said, “We are honored to partner with the Pierre de Coubertin family for what we believe is a special showcase of the Olympic movement and the part India has played in it. We are on the cusp of the greatest sporting event in the world, and it was our desire at JSW to do something more in the city of Paris. It is our mission at JSW Sports to further the Olympic movement, not just in India, but in the world. The Inspire Institute of Sport will be represented by close to 30 athletes as part of Team India at the Games next month, and our effort is to keep increasing that number with every passing Olympic cycle. India’s rise as an economic power is evident. But it is through sport that a country’s soft power is truly showcased, and we will play our part in making this happen.“

His Excellency Jawed Ashraf, Ambassador of India to the Republic of France, thanked the JSW Group for putting together the exhibition that will be on until September 10 and will be open to the public.

PALLATHUR: The AMM Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the Murugappa Group, marked a historic milestone on Monday with the inauguration of the Centenary Block of the AMM Hospital at Pallathur in Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu. Azim Premji, Founder Chairman of Wipro Limited, presided over the function and unveiled the inauguration plaque.

Established a century ago, the AMM Hospital, known locally as the ‘oru ruba’ (one rupee, which is the fee charged from patients) hospital, has been a beacon of quality healthcare for the community in the region. With the addition of the new block, it will now have state-of-the-art diagnostics, including CT Scan facilities.

To commemorate the legacy of the AMM Foundation, which runs several hospitals and educational institutions as well as a range of other initiatives, a coffee table book titled A Century of Service, authored by historian and heritage activist Sriram V, was released by Mr. Premji. The first copy of the book was received by P Chidambaram, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, and former Union Minister.

Welcoming the gathering, M V Subbiah, former Managing Trustee, of AMM Foundation, and former Chairman, of Murugappa Group said, “In 1922, my grandfather laid the foundation stone of the AMM Hospital and the hospital opened in 1924. That tiny seed has grown into the AMM Foundation that today serves communities that surround the places where our businesses have prospered.”

Commenting on the occasion, Premji spoke about philanthropy and its diverse forms, stating, “No action is too trivial. There is no doubt that we are a vast country, and our challenges are huge. There is also no doubt that our systems need to improve on multiple aspects. However, we can’t keep waiting for grand things to happen. We need to do whatever we can do for our community and society in our sphere.”

Chidambaram, reflecting on the AMM Foundation’s legacy and impact, remarked, “To engage in philanthropy, one must first find the willingness to do so. And the AMM Foundation has shown over and over how willing they are to give back to the community.”

MA Alagappan, Managing Trustee of the AMM Foundation and former Chairman of the Murugappa Group spoke about the Foundation’s various activities, as well as the plans for the future. “Going into the next century, we have four verticals — education, healthcare, sports, and environment. When the opportunity arises we will expand into other initiatives to benefit the community,”.

Meenakshi Murugappan proposed the vote of thanks.

PUNE: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge completes a momentous 100 years on 17th September 2023. The heritage landmark which begins at Mangala Theatre and alights in front of Shaniwar Wada was built by Raobahadur Ganpatrao Mahadeo Kenjale during British Rule under the aegis of Sir George Lloyd, the then governor of Bombay Presidency. It was known as the Llyod Bridge and was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge post-independence.  

A special celebration is being organized by the Kenjale family at the Shanivar Wada side of the bridge on Sunday 17th September 2023 at 3 p.m. The historic event is open to all. A cornerstone marking the completion of 100 years of ‘Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge’ will be laid at the hands of Chandrakant Patil-Guardian Minister of Pune in the presence of PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Additional PMC Commissioner Vikas Dhakane along with Ramesh Kenjale, Milind Kenjale, Kuber Kenjale, Kailas Kenjale and Kenjale Family, the decedents of Raobahadur Ganpatrao Mahadeo Kenjale.

Speaking about the event, Abhijit Kenjale-the second great-grandson of Raobahadur Ganpatrao Mahadeo Kenjale said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge is a landmark that was built to connect ‘Bhamburda’ to Pune in 1923. It split the city into Eastern Pune and Western Pune. My second great-grandfather was given the title of Raobahadur during British rule for his work in Public Welfare and building this bridge was one of them. The bridge was conceptualized by Lt . Col E.S Prose who was in charge of Public Infrastructure Development in the British Government.”

“Built with black basalt, the bridge is not just a testament of strong quality work which has withstood the test of time, but also an architectural marvel with delicate carvings on both sides. In today’s time as well, it serves as a landmark that connects Pune Municipal Corporation with the historic Shanivar Wada and oversees Pune’s Public Transport System, PMPML’s hub. The bridge lies over Mutha River and has been given Grade-II heritage status by Pune Municipal Corporation.” He added further

The bridge is being readied for the commemorative ceremony and will be decorated with flowers and traditional ‘rangoli’. The laying of the cornerstone will be done with great pomp and shown with the customary ‘Dhol-Taasha’.  The event will also include the unveiling of a special documentary made on ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge’ in the presence of many dignitaries from Pune.  A huge helping hand has been extended by PMC officials and BJP Pune Chief Dheraj Ghate in organizing the event.
