NEW DELHI: The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), in collaboration with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), organised a first-of-its-type roundtable conference themed “Gas se Gati, Bharat ki Pragati” at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event brought together government dignitaries, industry leaders, and experts to deliberate on the transformative role of gas-based mobility, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), to drive sustainable urban and long-haul transportation in India. This event, organised under SIAM’s गैस गतिशीलता (Gas Mobility) initiative, supported the adoption of clean and efficient gas-based mobility solutions in India.

Delivering the opening address and highlighting India’s commitment to cleaner and sustainable fuel alternatives, Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, said, “Today’s initiative reflects the commitment to further Gas-based mobility in India. Globally, we are the largest Gas-fuel utilizing country in the mobility sector, and we are not stopping there. Industry is committed to CNG adoption. India started adopting CNG for cars, and gradually, we became the biggest gas-based bus and three-wheeler fleet operating nation. Last year’s launch of the world’s first 2W CNG vehicle marks another milestone in India’s CNG journey.”

Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, underlined, “India’s USD 240 billion auto industry is pivotal to achieving carbon neutrality by 2047 and advancing Viksit Bharat through reduced fossil fuel dependence. Gas-based mobility, supported by the PLI scheme with three CNG vehicle components and 11 of 103 components for gas powertrains, is a key driver for the same. Localisation of these components and technologies will strengthen efforts towards Atmanirbhar Bharat while positioning gas mobility as a critical factor in our sustainable and self-reliant future.”

Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, said, “The agriculture sector generates 228 MMT of agri waste, contributing to poor air quality with health costs estimated at USD 35 billion. Converting just 10% of our oil imports to CBG could have a transformative impact. With only 200 CBG plants in India, demand creation is critical, and Indian auto OEMs can lead by building a global hub for green automobiles. CNG infrastructure upgrades will pave the way for CBG adoption, enabling farmers to convert agricultural waste into energy, reducing stubble burning, and positioning India to capture the global market.”

Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., said, “The transport sector is pivotal to India’s energy transition. The government’s continuous support has achieved the target of installing nearly 10,000 CNG stations by 2025. A domestic gas pricing mechanism has created employment for 3 lakh people. Compressed Biogas (CBG) transforms rural infrastructure, benefiting farmers, pollution control, and the economy. LNG’s role in sustainable mobility is promising with enhanced distribution infrastructure. India leads in CNG two-wheelers, with OEMs driving innovation, improving fuel efficiency from 26 km/kg to 34 km/kg, and dedicating more R&D for consumer-friendly solutions.”

Dr. Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, Member, Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), highlighted, “Delhi NCR, with PM10 emission averaging over 200 last year, faces multisectoral pollution. The CAQM is working in mission mode, phasing out end-of-life vehicles, redeveloping 68 roads in Delhi NCR to control dust, and reducing stubble burning by 86% in Punjab and 66% in Haryana. Transitioning to CNG, CBG, and LNG is a necessity, not a choice. Bio-CNG’s decentralisation potential can turn pollution into power.”

Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson, PNGRB, delivered the keynote address by stating,“The energy transition in India’s transport sector is well underway, with decarbonisation playing a pivotal role. With the manufacturing sector contributing heavily, the gas sector is utilising existing infrastructure to drive this shift. The strong growth in CNG adoption as a transition fuel is a success story we must continue to advance, ensuring gas-based mobility supports India’s sustainable future.”

D Balakrishnan, Co-Chair, SIAM Gas-Based Mobility Group and Vice President (PD), Ashok Leyland Ltd., delivered the closing remarks for the inaugural session.

The thematic session, themed “Accelerating Future Growth and Promoting Gas-Based Mobility”, chaired by Ved Prakash Mishra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, highlighted, “SIAM is consistently supporting the Government in sustainable initiatives and gas-based mobility. Until the transition to EVs takes place, gas will continue to play an important role. The use of gas can help reduce pollution and CO₂ emissions. Over the last 10 years, significant positive changes have been observed in Delhi with the increased adoption of CNG. We aim to reduce pollution and achieve a cleaner future by strengthening collaboration to facilitate gas-based mobility.”

The session featured insights from Dr. Mukesh Sharma, Professor, IIT Kanpur, who noted, “Air pollution, high oil dependency, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel cost volatility pose significant challenges to India’s mobility. IIT Kanpur’s source apportionment and action plans for 18 non-attainment cities, including Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, are critical for targeted interventions. Transitioning from BS-IV to CNG vehicles has achieved up to 90-95% PM reduction, highlighting the transformative potential of gas-based mobility in improving air quality and sustainability.”

Dr. Gaurav Mishra, Scientist-F, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, said, “With India’s renewable energy capacity at 219.2 GW, bioenergy accounts for 11.5%, with a biopower potential of 42 GW from surplus agricultural residue and bagasse. Promoting bioenergy and waste-to-energy technologies, such as CBG, enhances energy security, reduces fossil fuel dependency, and mitigates environmental impacts.”

The session also included presentations by Subhash Kumar, Director General, Association of CGD Entities (ACE) on “Expanding City Gas Distribution Networks: Enhancing Urban Mobility and Sustainability”; Ashu Shinghal, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Ltd. on “Challenges & Opportunities in Gas Based Mobility”, and Milind J Pagare, Vice President (R&D), Bajaj Auto Ltd. on “Emerging New Automobile Technologies of 2025 and Beyond: 2wheeler & 3-Wheeler perspective”.The session was moderated by Payal Goel, Director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP.

The panel discussion on the topic, “Fuelling the Shift: CBG & LNG for Today’s Mobility and Beyond”, was moderated by Gurpreet Singh Chugh, Managing Director, ICF.

The discussion featured insights by Venugopal Mothkoor, Senior Specialist, NITI Aayog, who said, “NITI Aayog’s roadmap to net zero by 2070 addresses India’s growing transport demands as a developing economy. LNG and electric trucking will play significant roles, with LNG remaining critical while EV charging infrastructure develops. CBG, like ethanol with its successful 20% blending from rural raw materials, requires bridging CAPEX infrastructure costs to scale up, fostering sustainable mobility and rural prosperity.”

Other esteemed panelists included Rajesh Khanna, Co-Chair, SIAM Gas-Based Mobility Group & Sr. General Manager (PD), Tata Motors; Goutom Chakraborty, CEO, GAIL Gas Ltd.; Kamal Kishore Chatiwal, Managing Director, Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL); Rajinder S Sachdeva, Deputy CEO & Chief Transformation Officer, VE Commercial Vehicles; and Sunit Verma, Expert Advisor, PNGRB, who shed light on the gas-based economy in the transportation sector in India.

Ashish Chutani, Chairman, SIAM Gas-Based Mobility Group and Head – Government & Policy Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., delivered the closing remarks and vote of thanks.

The conference highlighted SIAM and PNGRB’s commitment to operating gas-based mobility as a cornerstone of India’s sustainable transportation ecosystem, supporting the nation’s vision of carbon neutrality by 2070 and the Viksit Bharat by 2047.

MUMBAI: The Wealth Company Asset Management Private Limited, part of the Pantomath Group, has launched Bharat Bhoomi Fund—a ₹1000 crore Category II AIF with a ₹1000 crore green shoe option—under its fifth Bharat Value Fund series. The Fund brings private equity-style rigor to India’s growing real estate sector, with a focused approach on execution-ready projects across high-opportunity corridors and core cities.

Bharat Bhoomi Fund marks a thoughtful expansion of The Wealth Company’s investment canvas, rooted in the same value-driven philosophy that defines the rest of its approach. Building on the strong foundation and credibility of the Bharat Value Fund series, trusted and backed by quality investors such as Sovereign Fund of Funds and prominent Family Offices, this fund provides a natural way to broaden exposure to real assets. Offering visibility and collateral backing, real estate forms a resilient foundation alongside equity and private market investments, demonstrating lasting value across market cycles.

For The Wealth Company, real estate is not a new direction; it’s a natural progression aligned with the need to diversify portfolios. The asset class aligns perfectly with the focus on tangible value, risk-managed returns, and disciplined capital deployment. The Fund is built to bridge the gap between developer mindset and investor expectations, applying hallmark underwriting and governance frameworks to a physical asset class, supported by expert operators and executional control.

The Fund will follow a diversified capital allocation strategy—investing in data centers, warehousing, hospitality, and renewable parks, sectors aligned with India’s evolving infrastructure, digital transformation, and sustainability priorities. Investor demand for these new economic assets is growing, driven by the country’s digital and green energy transitions. These segments go beyond traditional real estate—they represent economic infrastructure, reflecting the fund’s strategic focus. Alongside this, investments will target mid-to-premium residential, retail, plotted villas, and mixed-use developments across high-growth cities such as Mumbai (MMR), NCR, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. The fund will also focus on infrastructure-led corridors and plotted developments benefiting from upcoming connectivity and urban expansion.

The Fund is led by Rakesh Kumar, whose experience spans over 50,000 real estate transactions and senior leadership roles at Shell, Walmart, and Reliance, along with Bhavya Bagrecha, who has executed over ₹2,500 crore in institutional real estate investments and introduced India’s first REIT-style structure under SEBI’s VCF regulations. The team is further strengthened by Peter Sharp, former head of Walmart’s Asia real estate operations, who joins as an advisor with over 35 years of global experience.

The Fund’s approach is designed to identify projects with clear land titles, regulatory readiness, and early exit visibility. It will target ready-to-launch assets that can move swiftly from investment to value creation. With a robust pipeline of approximately 1200 acres across six projects, Bharat Bhoomi Fund is well-positioned to deploy capital with speed, prudence, and precision.

Madhu Lunawat, Founder and Director of The Wealth Company Asset Management, stated, “As capital becomes more thoughtful, the demand for real assets with real outcomes has never been higher. Bharat Bhoomi Fund allows meeting that demand with discipline, data, and domain expertise. The Wealth Company’s investment ethos is now extending confidently into India’s real estate space—with conviction and clarity.”

As the Indian real estate market matures, Bharat Bhoomi Fund arrives with timing, leadership, and structure, opening the door to a new standard in real estate investing.

RBI Deputy Governor launches include UPI Interoperable Cash Deposit at ATMs

MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Shri T. Rabi Sankar today announced the launch of product offerings aimed at transforming the ATM infrastructure in the country. Unveiled in association with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2024, the initiatives include UPI Interoperable Cash Deposit (UPI-ICD) and banks showcasing Digital Banking Units (DBUs).

The introduction of UPI ICD allows customers to deposit cash at ATMs operated by banks and white-label ATM operators (WLAOs) using UPI to their bank account or any other bank account without the need for a physical card. These ATMs are cash recycler machines that are used for both cash deposits and withdrawals. Leveraging their mobile numbers linked to UPI, virtual payment addresses (VPA), and account IFSCs, customers can now make cash deposits, making the process more seamless, inclusive, and accessible. Consumers will be able to access these features as the banks gradually roll them out.

ATMs with open architecture can host bank apps positioning them as DBUs offering cash deposits, withdrawals, and other banking services such as opening bank accounts, applying for credit cards, initiating fixed deposits, applying for safe deposit lockers, etc.

Additionally, today at the GFF 2024, Shri Vivek Deep, Executive Director, RBI announced the rebranding of the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to Bharat Connect. This is an important step to refresh and strengthen the BBPS brand. Bharat Connect embodies NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited’s (NBBL’s) values and vision for stakeholders and customers, going beyond a bill payment system to create an ecosystem that connects individuals and businesses, through an integrated platform.

The launches took place in the presence of Shri Ajay Kumar Choudhary, Non-Executive Chairman and Independent Director, NPCI.

CREDAI nurtures future leadership through its Youth and Women’s Wing

PUNE: The Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI) today released a report on Indian Real Estate’s contribution towards Viksit Bharat at its annual conference YouthCon organized by CREDAI’s Youth Wing – a leading industry platform designed to bring together the next generation of real estate developers to cultivate and mentor them, fostering growth into proficient professionals, principled entrepreneurs, and authentic leaders within the real estate sector.

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs & Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, inaugurated the two-day conference alongside the CREDAI leadership team. The two-day conference featured various sessions aimed at helping delegates prepare for the future of real estate.

During the event, CREDAI released a report “Building Viksit Bharat”-Transformative role of the real estate sector in India. According to CREDAI, Indian Real Estate is bound to have a significant impact on the Indian economy – with the sector projected to reach $1.3 Trillion (13.8% of Projected GDP) by FY 2034 and $5.17 Trillion (17.5% of Projected GDP) by 2047.

CREDAI, in its report, also outlined pertinent industry trends and insights that are bound to provide a holistic view of the sector’s growth, while also giving direction to the industry as a whole:

The current market size of Indian Real Estate stands at 24 lac crores, split between Residential and Commercial in the ratio of 80% and 20% respectively.

Among the residential segment, 61% of the current supply is above the cost of Rs 45 lacs. The average home area is also increasing at 11% on an annual basis.

Over 28 crore Indian citizens want to buy a house, among the 40-crore population that is yet to own a house in the country. CREDAI also projects that there will be a 7-crore additional housing demand by 2030.

Reflecting the aspirational growth of Indian Homebuyers, over 87.4% of housing demand by 2030 is expected to be of houses costing more than 45 lacs.

With the above findings, CREDAI re-emphasized the significance of Indian Real Estate to the overall growth of the economy and some of the most important macroeconomic indicators including Employment, Revenues for Government and Banking eco-system, and increasing Per Capita Income. Coupled with the cascading impact of the sector that supports over 250+ industries directly and indirectly, CREDAI’s projections provide a definitive course of action and visibility on the sector’s contribution to the country’s development in its mission to become Viksit Bharat.

CREDAI President Boman R Irani shares his thoughts “Indian Real Estate today stands at an extremely important junction amidst India’s journey to become a developed economy by 2047. Due to its strong multiplier effect coupled with robust real estate demand – for both housing and commercial – the sector is bound to play a critical role in multiplying GDP value and increasing revenues, and per capita incomes that will aid further growth as a part of a self-sustaining cycle due to ever-increasing consumption. As India’s leading real estate body, we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders involved to ensure a seamless path towards achieving our collective mission of becoming a fully developed economy.”

CREDAI Chairman Manoj Gaur shares his remarks “As the premier body of Indian Real Estate, we feel extremely proud at what we’ve achieved as an industry – and are even more excited at the potential that this sector currently holds as the primary economic engine of this country. To achieve Viksit Bharat, Real Estate is going to be at the nucleus of growth which is also validated by the recent sheer volume that has coincided with strong QoQ GDP numbers. Moving forward – real estate again is going to play a pivotal role as India strives to multiply its economy.”

CREDAI President Elect Shekhar G Patel says “Currently, India is witnessing significant GDP growth despite global headwinds which is a testament to our economic and sectoral resilience. The entire real estate industry is extremely excited to build on this strong platform and re-emphasizes the importance of a facilitating eco-system that supports all concerned stakeholders, for not just the sustained and sustainable growth of the industry but the entire economy. Through our findings, we have devised a roadmap of Indian Real Estate’s contribution towards Viksit Bharat as we jointly work towards achieving the feat.”
