Fabricators gain additional income by participating in the collection and recycling of plastic guard films from color-coated steel sheets

PUNE: Tata BlueScope Steel, one of India’s leading producers of color-coated steel and building solutions, launched a sustainability initiative, in Rajasthan, aimed at collecting and recycling plastic waste, specifically the plastic guard film used with its flagship retail brand DURASHINE®.

DURASHINE® is a premium steel roofing product offering durable and aesthetically superior solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

These sheets are protected by a thin plastic guard film that prevents abrasion and scratches during transportation and storage, preserving their coating and paint finish. Tata BlueScope Steel encourages the immediate removal of this guard film after installation to ensure proper disposal and recycling.

As part of this initiative, Tata BlueScope Steel aims to reduce the environmental footprint of its products by creating a collection-and-recycling ecosystem of plastic guard films through fabricators.

This approach not only promotes sustainable practices within the industry but also provides an additional income stream for fabricators who participate by depositing collected guard films at designated dealer locations in Rajasthan’s Pali, Udaipur, and Degana, where the pilot project was initiated.

“Tata BlueScope Steel is committed to driving sustainability across our operations. By partnering with local fabricators and a government-approved recycler, we aim to tackle plastic waste while also supporting the community and have received positive feedback. This initiative reflects our dedication to responsible business practices,” said Ajay Rattan, Vice President of Building Products – Infra, Safety, Sustainability & Corporate Communication), at Tata BlueScope Steel.

To facilitate this process, the company has partnered with a government-approved recycler and has also launched training programs under its Saksham initiative to enhance fabricators’ skills in handling DURASHINE® sheets.

Fabricators are incentivized to collect and return the guard films, making the initiative both environmentally beneficial and economically rewarding for those involved.

PUNE: Gera Developments, pioneers of the real estate business and the award-winning creators of premium residential and commercial projects in Pune, Goa, Bengaluru, and California, today announced that it has received the prestigious ‘Gold’ pre-certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Homes for its highly sought-after ChildCentric® Homes, Gera’s Planet of Joy.

Gera’s Planet of Joy is designed based on the IGBC standards that integrate a host of sustainable practices and solutions with an intent to mitigate the environmental impact of real estate construction. Accordingly, recognition has been accorded to the developer for taking initiatives such as the usage of low-flow fixtures for flushing to reduce the consumption of water for waste, implementation of drip irrigation for optimizing the use of water in plants, and the facility for rainwater harvesting, which helps in using the water for non-potable purposes.

With an aim to facilitate better ventilation and natural light for the well-being of dwellers, the project has leveraged 30% of the floor area of the apartment as windows. The apartments and common rooms for usage are equipped with LEDs and low-energy consumption fixtures that enable the optimization of electricity requirements. Similarly, high-efficiency motors and low-loss transformers contribute to reducing and tracking energy consumption.

Gera’s Planet of Joy has also adopted solar photo voltaic panels to generate electricity for common area lighting and the panels installed on the terraces help provide hot water to all the apartments. For eco-conscious homebuyers, the project has covered 15% of the land with plantations and more than 50% of the land surrounding the site also features green and open spaces.

In a statement, Rohit Gera, Managing Director of Gera Developments, said, “The ‘Gold’ recognition under the IGBC Green Homes rating system is a testimony of our commitment to conserving energy and natural resources through cutting-edge infrastructure and meticulously strategized project designs. Not just for Planet of Joy, Gera Developments has always adopted well-thought-through practices for sustainable development for all its projects. This pre-certification has reinforced our commitment and we look forward to paving the way by extending ourselves as a real estate company advocating for green development.”

Gera’s Planet of Joy was launched in December 2021 and has ever since garnered an exceptional response and emerged as Upper Kharadi’s fastest-selling project with more than 90% of inventory being sold in less than 10 months. In fact, Gera’s Planet of Joy managed to sell 525+ units, which was worth Rs. 425+ crores, within the first three days after launch.

Gera’s Planet of Joy is the third ChildCentric® Homes project in Pune and the fourth in India. This project is spread across a massive, 16-acres of land and offers world-class amenities such as 9 celebrity-led training academies, 6 clubhouses, a wave pool, a multipurpose court, an amphitheater, a herb garden, an art room, creche facilities, geo-fencing, cycling track, rock climbing wall, and much more.
