PUNE: Apollo Hospitals Pune, the city’s first 400-bed quaternary care centre, today announced the launch of its World Cancer Month awareness initiative, ‘Zero to Hero’, a campaign designed to highlight the life-saving impact of detecting cancer at its earliest stages. The initiative underscores Apollo’s core belief that cancer is conquerable when identified early, and brings together oncologists, survivors, and healthcare leaders to amplify the importance of screening, prevention, and timely intervention.

Apollo Hospitals Pune’s Oncology Centre of Excellence offers comprehensive cancer care supported by state-of-the-art technology and multidisciplinary expertise. The centre is equipped with AI-enabled PET-CT for highly accurate early detection, the VARIAN EDGE LINAC for precise, targeted radiation therapy, and the Da Vinci Xi robotic system for complex cancer surgeries across urological, gynaecological, gastrointestinal, and head and neck cancers. Backed by advanced diagnostics, precision radiation, and robotic surgery, the centre delivers an integrated approach spanning early detection, accurate diagnosis, advanced treatment, and improved recovery, reinforcing Apollo’s commitment to improving cancer outcomes through technology-led, patient-centric care.

Speaking on the launch, Dr. Manisha Karmarkar, CEO, Apollo Hospitals Pune, said, “Early cancer detection and prevention are among the most powerful tools in the fight against cancer. Early intervention significantly improves survival and reinforces Apollo’s long-standing belief that cancer can be defeated. However, screening only works when people participate. Fear, stigma, misinformation, and lack of awareness often delay diagnosis. At Apollo Hospitals Pune, our comprehensive ProHealth programme, India’s first AI-powered preventive health programme, empowers individuals to take proactive control of their health through advanced screening and risk assessment.”

Dr. Snita Sinukumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist, Robotic and HIPEC Specialist, said, “Nearly 40 to 50% of cancers can be prevented or detected early through screening and lifestyle measures. Tests such as digital mammography, Pap smear, low-dose CT scans, colonoscopy, PSA testing, and oral examinations can identify cancer even before symptoms appear. When detected early, survival rates can improve to as high as 80 to 90% or more.”

The Oncology Team at Apollo Hospital, Pune, further added, “Many cancers can be prevented through lifestyle choices and public health efforts. Avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, eating fruits and vegetables, sun protection, and vaccines like HPV and Hepatitis B are key. Governments should ensure access to screening and health campaigns, while healthcare, schools, and workplaces promote healthy habits and provide guidance at an early age.”

Equally important is recognising early warning signs and overcoming the tendency to delay medical check-ups, a trend particularly common in men’s health. Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, unusual bleeding, new lumps, or a chronic cough lasting more than three weeks should never be ignored. While these signs do not always indicate cancer, early detection is critical for successful treatment, especially for prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, which may be asymptomatic in their early stages. Modern interventions, such as advanced robotic surgery, have made many early-stage cancers highly treatable or even completely curable. Therefore, it is essential to listen to your body, use simple screening tests such as the PSA blood test, and consult a doctor promptly if any symptoms persist.

Through initiatives such as ‘Zero to Hero’, Apollo Hospitals Pune aims to build greater awareness, encourage proactive health-seeking behaviour, and empower individuals to take timely action, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to improving cancer outcomes through early detection and advanced care.

PUNE: Ruby Hall Clinic announced a landmark advancement in regional oncology with the launch of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. This cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer will be housed at the newly inaugurated Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune.

The facility was inaugurated by the leadership of Ruby Hall Clinic, including Dr. P.K. Grant, Dr. Simon Grant, and Dr. Himesh Gandhi, alongside the Kalyani family, represented by Dr. Baba Kalyani, Mrs. Sunita Kalyani, and Mr. Amit Kalyani of Bharat Forge. They were joined by international experts from Focal One, including Prof. Pascal (University of Toulouse), Dr. Damian, Vice President and CEO, and Mr. Ryan. The initiative has been made possible by the support of the Kalyani family, who have contributed to establishing the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic, to improve access to advanced cancer care in India.

With over 40,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed annually in India, many men traditionally delay treatment due to the risks associated with invasive surgery or radiation – specifically concerns regarding recovery time and long-term functional health.
Robotic HIFU addresses these fears by offering:
• Targeted Precision: Destroys cancerous tissue while sparing surrounding healthy structures.
• Non-Invasive Nature: A completely incision-free and radiation-free procedure.
• Rapid Recovery: Typically performed as a day-case, allowing patients to return to their lives almost immediately.
• Preserved Quality of Life: Significantly reduces the risk of urinary and sexual dysfunction compared to traditional methods.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. P.K. Grant, Chairman and Managing Trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “The introduction of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic marks an important milestone for cancer care in our region. Our commitment has always been to bring advanced and meaningful medical technology to patients in India rather than wait for it to reach us years later. Establishing this programme reflects that philosophy and ensures that our patients have access to treatment options that prioritise both outcomes and quality of life.”

Dr Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director Bharat Forge, whose family’s philanthropic support made the institute possible, emphasised the importance of local access: “I have always believed that advances in technology should be used for the good of society. This programme is a clear example of how digital and AI-enabled innovation can make a real difference to patients by offering precise, minimally invasive treatment. Under the leadership of Dr Himesh Gandhi, the Robotic HIFU system has already begun delivering encouraging results for patients. I would like to congratulate Dr Purvez Grant and his team for making it possible for us to bring this technology to society.”

Dr Simon Grant, Physician and Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic, noted, “FOCAL ONE offers a level of precision that allows us to treat only the areas affected by cancer with the intention of maintaining functional outcomes. We assess that cancer control can be achieved while preserving day-to-day quality of life for patients.”

Ms. Natalie Grant Nanda Ruby Hall Clinic, SPL, “Bringing the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy to Pune continues that legacy while setting the foundation for the next generation of cancer care. We are honoured to have the support of the Kalyani family in making this possible.”

From a clinical perspective Dr Himesh Gandhi, Consultant Uro-oncologist and Director of Robotic Surgery at Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “For many men, the fear of the treatment is as great as the fear of the cancer itself. Robotic HIFU removes that barrier, offering a non-invasive pathway that prioritises the patient’s functional independence and quick return to daily life.”

With the establishment of the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy, Ruby Hall Clinic strengthens its position as a leader in advanced oncological care with an emphasis on accessibility, clinical excellence, and improved patient experience.

By Dr Venkata Boppana B, Consultant in Urology and Uro-Oncology at Narayana Health, Kolkata

Once considered uncommon in India, prostate cancer is now emerging as a significant health threat among men, particularly in urban cities. An increasing number of prostate cancer diagnoses are being reported in India, in men in their early 50s.

According to Dr. Venkata Boppana B, Consultant in Urology and Uro-Oncology at Narayana Health, Kolkata, a recent study presented at the Urological Society of India in 2025 shows a clear upward trend in the prostate cancer diagnosis among men aged between 50 to 55. The age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR), which measures the number of new cases per 1,00,000 men, is expected to rise from 7.41 in 2022 to 9.15 by 2031.

Family History and Genetic Risk

Genetics remains one of the primary risk factors for prostate cancer. Men with a first-degree relative, such as a father or a brother, who has been diagnosed with the disease have a significantly higher risk. For these individuals, Dr. Boppana emphasizes that screening isn’t optional – it is essential. However, genetics does not explain the rise.

Urban Lifestyles and Their Impact

The increase in prostate cancer cases is particularly noticeable in India’s urban hubs. Cities have become hotspots for lifestyle-related health issues, and prostate cancer is proving to be no exception. Long hours behind a desk, little to no physical activity, and constant stress have become the norm.

Dr. Boppana warns that this sedentary lifestyle, accompanied by high stress levels, can affect hormone regulation, potentially increasing the risk of prostate cancer.

In addition to this, dietary shifts are responsible for shifting the tide as well. Meals dominated by red meat, dairy products, and fats have increasingly replaced the traditional Indian diets, which were typically rich in fibre and plant-based foods. Studies suggest a strong correlation between high-fat, low-fibre diets and increased risk of prostate cancer, adds Dr. Boppana.

Screening and Early Detection

The good news is that awareness around men’s health is improving in India. Conversations about prostate cancer, once surrounded by stigma and silence, are becoming more common. As a result, more men are undergoing screening tests such as the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test and digital rectal exams. These tools allow for earlier diagnosis and significantly better treatment outcomes.

Early detection remains the foundational step of effective prostate cancer management. When identified in the early stages, prostate cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, with high survival rates. Delayed diagnosis, however, can lead to advanced disease that is far more difficult to manage and may involve aggressive interventions such as hormone therapy.

Steps Toward Prevention

Several modifiable lifestyle choices can help prevent prostate cancer. Dr. Boppana stresses that men must and should prioritize a balanced and healthy diet, engage in regular physical activities, undergo routine screening, and manage their weight and stress. These steps can significantly reduce the risk, even if they don’t eliminate the possibility of getting prostate cancer entirely.

By Dr. Aparna Sreevatsa, Medical Oncologist, Sahyadri Narayana Hospital, Shivamogga

It’s a significant accomplishment for a woman to finish her breast cancer therapy. However, as oncologists frequently emphasise, surviving is only the first step. The ensuing years may present a unique set of difficulties, some anticipated and some unexpected.

The heart is one of the less well-known issues.

Heart health can be impacted by several cancer treatments, including targeted medicines like trastuzumab, chemotherapy medications like anthracyclines, and chest radiation. Even years after the conclusion of treatment, the effects might not be felt right away; they might develop gradually. Cardio-oncology, a relatively new area of medicine, is significantly improving this situation.

Our goal at Shivamogga’s Sahyadri Narayana Hospital is to always be one step ahead. We have a Breast Cancer Survivorship Clinic every third Thursday of the month, where women who have finished treatment can come for ongoing support. The clinic’s goal is to help survivors live better, not simply longer, by offering everything from lifestyle counselling and advice to heart exams and other follow-up care. A key component of this journey is the cardio-oncology care we provide, which is directed by consultant cardiologist Dr. Sreevatsa Nadig.

One of the most prestigious conferences in the industry, the 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, gave us the chance to present our results to a worldwide audience earlier this year.

Our study asked a simple but important question: Are breast cancer survivors more prone to early signs of heart disease?

To investigate this, we examined two cohorts of women: one with a history of breast cancer and another with no such history. We employed a scan known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, which aids in identifying early heart artery calcification. It’s a non-intrusive method of identifying hidden dangers before they become significant issues.

We were pleasantly surprised by what we discovered!

The two groups did not differ significantly from one another. Breast cancer survivors did not seem to be more susceptible to early heart disease than their peers when receiving the right care and monitoring.

This offers a message of hope—and a practical reminder to us all.

What can GPs and primary care doctors take away from this?

Follow-up is effective. Long-term issues can be avoided with the use of structured survivorship care.

Consider more than recurrence. It’s possible that symptoms like fatigue or dyspnoea don’t indicate that the cancer has returned. Heart health should also be taken into account.

Lives can be saved by early screenings. While not necessary for everyone, CAC scoring can be a helpful tool when used appropriately.

Collaboration is important. Collaboration between oncologists, cardiologists, general practitioners, and mental health specialists is beneficial to survivors.

For every woman who walks out of the oncology ward cancer-free, the hope is that she steps into a life full of vitality, confidence, and support. That’s why we believe survivorship needs just as much attention as the treatment itself. If you’re caring for a breast cancer survivor, do consider referring them to our clinic. Together, we can make sure their post-cancer journey is not only longer—but healthier and happier too

FICCI FLO Pune, Ayugen Biosciences, and Roche Diagnostics Unite for ‘Shield Her Future

PUNE: FICCI FLO Pune, in collaboration with Ayugen Biosciences and Roche Diagnostics, organized Shield Her Future – Cervical Forum 2025, a dedicated awareness program focusing on cervical cancer prevention, diagnosis, and early screening.

The event featured esteemed medical professionals and public health leaders, with Dr. Gauravi Mishra, Deputy Director of the Center for Cancer Epidemiology at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, as the Guest of Honour. Anita Agarwal, Chairperson, FICCI FLO Pune, and Manish Punglia, Director, AyuGen Biosciences, along with other dignitaries, were present on the occasion.

The second half of the program featured a powerful panel discussion moderated by Dr. Sandeep Sewlikar, Head of Medical Affairs, Roche Diagnostics. Panelists included Dr. Harshad Parasnis, Gynecological Oncologist, Dr. Milind Dugad, Past Vice President, POGS, Dr. Aarti Nimkar, Past President, POGS, and Manish Punglia, Molecular Genomics Expert

Dr. Mishra emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “We know the exact cause of cervical cancer and how to diagnose and prevent it. Yet India bears one-fifth of the global burden, with over 1.3 lakh women diagnosed annually—many at advanced stages. This is a cancer that is both preventable and curable if detected early.”

She highlighted that persistent infection with high-risk oncogenic HPV is the only cause. The symptoms that may arise at a later stage include bleeding between two periods and that too frequently, bleeding after sexual intercourse, post menopausal bleeding or spotting, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, etc. Dr. Mishra also advocated for routine screening beginning at age 30, noting that pre-cancerous stages can be identified and treated effectively.

Dr. Aarti Nimkar stressed the importance of shifting perceptions: “We must overcome the myth that cervical cancer cannot be treated. With timely screening and treatment, cervical cancer can be treated .”

Dr. Meenu Agarwal emphasized the need for regular checkups.

Elaborating on symptoms in later stages, Dr. Milind Dugad said that when HPV is persistent, it may not give any signs; therefore, it is important to do screening, especially after the age of 30 years, even if they have taken vaccines.

Talking about the guidelines, Dr.Harshad Parasnis said that screening methods are available, such as a Pap test, where we pick up the changes in the cells, whether mild, moderate, or severe. The other test is where we pick up the virus, and that is known as the HPV test.

Manish Punglia, Director AyuGen, echoed these sentiments: “In an age of medical and technological advancement, it is unacceptable that cervical cancer still claims so many lives. This forum is not just about creating awareness, but about driving the message that cervical cancer is preventable.”

With cervical cancer causing over 67,000 deaths annually, healthcare professionals urge women to take charge of their health with regular screenings and preventive care.

By: Dr. Upasana Palo – Consultant, Gynaecologic Oncology and Robotic Surgery, Narayana Health, Kolkata

Cervical and Ovarian Cancers Among Top Health Threats for Indian Women

Gynecologic cancers continue to be a major health concern for Indian women, with cervical and ovarian cancers ranking among the most common. Despite increased awareness, India still sees over 1.2 lakh new cases of cervical cancer every year, resulting in more than 67,000 deaths. As these numbers remain alarmingly high, experts urge women to prioritise regular screenings, vaccination, and early consultation to improve outcomes and save lives.

Early Warning Signs Should Not Be Ignored: Timely Diagnosis Can Save Lives

The signs of these cancers can be missed if not taken seriously. Women should pay attention to unusual symptoms like very heavy or irregular periods, bleeding after menopause or sex, unusual vaginal discharge, a bloated stomach, loss of appetite, or a sudden increase in belly size due to fluid build-up. Sometimes, what looks like a harmless cyst or fibroid after an ultrasound test may be cancer. Blood tests can also give clues, and if anything seems suspicious, it’s important to consult a gynecologic cancer specialist without delay. Early treatment, especially surgery that eradicates the cancer in one go, gives the best chance of a cure.

Understanding the Causes: Age, HPV Infection, and Family History Play Key Roles

The causes of these cancers vary. The risk increases with age, and infections like HPV (human papillomavirus) are the main cause of cervical cancer. This virus is extremely common, and most women get exposed to it at some point. Some cancers, especially of the ovaries and breasts, can run in families and may be passed down through genes.

Nutrition and Lifestyle

Diet and lifestyle contribute to 20–60% of cancer cases worldwide. In gynecologic cancers, especially endometrial and ovarian, obesity and poor nutrition are major risk factors. Obesity alone is linked to nearly 40% of endometrial cancer cases. Low intake of fruits and vegetables and high consumption of processed foods increase cancer risk. On the other hand, a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight control can reduce the risk of certain gynecologic cancers by up to 30%, making prevention largely lifestyle-driven.

Prevention is Possible: Vaccination, Screening, and Healthy Habits Can Reduce Risk

Prevention is possible in many cases. The HPV vaccine, which is recommended by the World Health Organisation and most health authorities, can prevent over 90% of cervical cancer cases. Regular tests like Pap smears and HPV screening can help catch problems early. Women with a strong family history of cancer can get genetic tests done and, if needed, take preventive steps like surgery. Healthy habits and regular checkups also go a long way in reducing cancer risk.

Modern Treatments Offer Hope: Advanced Surgeries, Targeted Therapies, and Innovative Approaches

Owing to medical advancements, treatment today is much more effective. Surgeons can now perform complex operations to remove cancer cells thoroughly. For certain cases, minimally invasive surgery using laparoscopy or robotics allows faster healing with smaller cuts. In some advanced cases, warm chemotherapy is given directly inside the abdomen to kill cancer cells more effectively. Alongside surgery, newer treatments like targeted drugs and immunotherapy are also being used based on each patient’s needs.

STAMFORD: The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) has been participating in raising funds for the Bennett Cancer Center of Stamford Hospital for the last 16 years. On Sunday, June 8th, GOPIO-CT participated in a walkathon at Stamford’s Mill River Park. The funds collected help cancer patients and their families during their stay at Stamford Hospital. Funds are also used specifically for patients’ rides to and from treatment, nutrition counseling, acupuncture, and other services at no charge to patients at the Bennett Cancer Center.

OPIO-CT was a sponsor of the event along with other corporations and non-profits. Each GOPIO-CT participant also raised funds. The chapter has been participating in the event for the last 14 years. This year, GOPIO-CT met more than exceeded its goal of raising over $2,500. The program was coordinated by GOPIO-CT Board member Anita Mathur.

Over the last 19 years, GOPIO-CT, a chapter of GOPIO International, has become an active and dynamic organization hosting interactive sessions with policymakers and academicians, community events, youth mentoring and networking workshops, and working with other area organizations to help create a better future. GOPIO-CT – Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – serves as a non-partisan, secular, civic and community service organization – promoting awareness of Indian culture, customs, and contributions of people of Indian origin through community programs, forums, events, and youth activities. It seeks to strengthen partnerships and create an ongoing dialogue with local communities.

By Dr. Venkata Boppana B, Consultant in Urology and Uro-Oncology at Narayana Health, Kolkata.

Once considered uncommon in India, prostate cancer is now emerging as a significant health threat among men, particularly in urban areas.

Aims to complete screening for 10,000 ultra-poor women for cervical and breast cancer by December 2025

SHIRDI: To promote preventive healthcare for underprivileged women in rural Maharashtra, the Hinduja Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the 110-year-old Hinduja Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Mane Medical Foundation & Research Centre, a reputed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The partnership marks the launch of a comprehensive cancer screening and awareness program, offered entirely free of cost, in Shirdi and other districts of Maharashtra.

This grassroots initiative aims to screen 10,000 ultra-poor women for cervical and breast cancer by December 2025. The first screening camp was held on June 8 at Rahuri, 60 km from Shirdi, where nearly 350 women were screened.

Focused on early detection and timely intervention, the program addresses a critical gap in access to preventive healthcare for marginalised groups who often go undiagnosed due to financial and geographical barriers.

Dr. Mane Medical Foundation will lead on-ground implementation, supported by community outreach efforts. All women will undergo Pap Smear and Clinical Breast Examination (CBE), and where needed, additional health checks including Haemoglobin, Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol tests.

Speaking on the initiative, Namrata Hinduja, Member, Steering Committee of Hinduja Foundation, said, “Empowering women through health is the foundation of building stronger communities. This initiative reaffirms our unwavering commitment to closing critical healthcare gaps and ensuring that no woman is denied care because of her economic circumstances.”

Paul Abraham, President of Hinduja Foundation, said, “Cancer has emerged as the fastest-growing health concern in India, with over 1.7 million new cases reported in 2025. Projections indicate that this number could rise to 2.5 million by 2030. Early detection through screening is key to managing costs and survival chances. This initiative is not just about early detection & treatment, but also about education, empowerment, and building a culture of preventive care. We are committed to creating a lasting impact in communities that need it the most.”

Women with positive findings will receive free-of-cost treatment at Dr. Mane’s Charitable Cancer Hospital in Rahuri, Shirdi. The program also includes training for community health workers to build long-term healthcare capacity in local areas.

Supported by Reliance Life Insurance, the initiative is currently being implemented in Shirdi and is planned to expand to other cancer hotbeds such as Osmanabad and Ahilyanagar districts soon.
