MUMBAI: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has published its Sustainability Report for FY2024-2025, which has set out the measurable progress it is making on its commitment to decarbonisation, circularity, and communities’ empowerment. The report also underscores that AM/NS India’s efforts to cut CO2 emissions and embrace circularity are aligned with global standards such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2021, European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), Integrated Reporting (IR) & Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR).

Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), said: “Sustainability is integral to our business strategy, promoting innovation, contributing to national climate action goals, and ensuring the well-being and safety of our employees and all other stakeholders. The past financial year has marked a turning point in our sustainability journey as we made steady progress on our strategic intent to continue producing high-quality and low-carbon emissions steel, more responsibly. Under the theme ‘From Green Promise to Green Action’, the report details measurable advancements we made in sustainability across our operations, value chain, and communities.”

Milestones

Low-carbon emissions steelmaking progress: CO2 emissions intensity has been reduced by 2.2% from the 2021 baseline. Since 2015, AM/NS India has reduced more than one-third CO2 emissions intensity. The company is currently recognised as one of India’s lowest carbon-emitting integrated steel producers (14% lower than the national average).

Renewable energy integration: 26% of the organisation’s total electricity consumption has been sourced from renewable energy. The notable boost in renewable energy was realised when the company’s flagship plant in Hazira, Gujarat, started receiving clean energy from about a 1-GW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh. The $0.7 billion project, developed by AM Green Energy (part of ArcelorMittal, one of our parent companies), represents the company’s commitment to decarbonisation.

Water resource management: Zero liquid discharge has been achieved across the company operations in India; 350 million litres of rainwater have been harvested.

Circularity: Nearly 4.1 lakh tonnes of steel scrap have been utilised in the financial year, resulting in 5.7% of scrap mix in steel production. A scrap processing plant in Khopoli, Maharashtra, accelerated this circularity in its supply chain, bringing AM/NS India closer to its 10 % scrap mix target by 2030.

The report details how the company is pursuing green hydrogen and carbon capture to pave the way for next-generation steelmaking. AM/NS India collaborated with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb India Accelerator program (in which IIT Madras was also involved) and interacted with 50 start-ups focusing on decarbonisation technologies. Out of them, three companies were awarded seed funding by ArcelorMittal to spur innovation.

The company has touched over 2.5 million lives so far in about 210 villages across the nation. Some of the key initiatives that generated considerable impact in the FY 24-25.

An intuitive energy management system helps hotels monitor energy consumption across properties and automate energy efficiency

DELHI: Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announced the launch of INNCOM Direct, an easy-to-install energy management system that uses automation to help improve energy efficiency in mid-market hotel properties. The launch of INNCOM Direct supports Honeywell’s alignment of its business around three compelling megatrends, including automation and the energy transition.

With more than 30% of U.S. hotel rooms typically vacant at any time, INNCOM Direct enables a hotel to manage energy-intensive HVAC systems more efficiently during periods when guestrooms are vacant.

“As hotels become more carbon-conscious, they are taking meaningful steps to show they care about their impact on the environment,” said Billal Hammoud, president and chief executive officer of Honeywell Building Automation. “Until now, mid-market hotels faced fewer options when it came to better managing their HVAC systems with automation. Now, INNCOM Direct is leveling the playing field with an affordable, cloud-based energy management system.”

The INNCOM technology was previously only available to high-end hotel operators. Now, this combination of hardware, software, and cloud monitoring provides mid-market, also known as limited-service, hotels with quick setup and portfolio analytics that can be accessed from mobile devices or a dashboard and can be used either on a single property or across an entire portfolio.

Since empty rooms and common areas do not need the same level of heating or cooling, INNCOM Direct uses a proprietary detection system to identify empty spaces and autonomously adjust the temperature without impacting consumer comfort. Similarly, unrented guest rooms can be set to a specific setting that can be heated or cooled to a more comfortable temperature once a guest checks in. If a guest leaves a room for an extended time, INNCOM Direct can change the temperature to an eco-friendlier temperature that is then automatically adjusted when the guest returns.

When it broke ground on its fifth hotel in Spring Hill, Tenn., Halifax Hospitality wanted ways to control its HVAC use, which can consume as much as 25% of the power bill, so it signed on to use INNCOM Direct. At 92,000 square feet and 159 rooms, this hotel is double the size of what the company would have developed a decade ago, leading to higher operational costs.

“Hotel rooms are getting bigger and bigger, and we needed something that will deliver energy savings, especially when guests aren’t using the room or a common area is empty,” said Hitesh Patel, vice president of Halifax Hospitality. “Utility costs are going up just like anything else. We’re always looking to find the next big thing to cut costs where we can.”

The solution enables the production of ethane and propane from naphtha, improving profitability and reducing the carbon intensity of ethylene and propylene production

MUMBAI: Honeywell today announced a transformational new naphtha to ethane and propane (NEP) process that will enable regions across the world to improve the efficiency of light olefin production and lower CO2 emissions per metric ton of olefin produced.

Ethane and propane are the ideal feedstocks for producing ethylene and propylene – important petrochemicals used in the production of chemicals, plastics, and fibers. This innovation demonstrates Honeywell’s alignment of its portfolio with three compelling megatrends, including the energy transition.

The NEP technology generates a tunable amount of ethane and propane from naphtha and/or LPG feedstocks. In a typical NEP-based olefin production complex, the ethane will be fed to an ethane steam cracking unit and the propane will be fed to a propane dehydrogenation unit. This approach generates more high-value ethylene and propylene with reduced production of lower-value byproducts compared to a traditional mixed-feed steam cracking unit directly processing the same quantity and composition of the feedstock. This new approach results in Net Cash Margin increases from 15 to 50%1.

An NEP-based olefins complex also reduces CO2 intensity per metric ton of light olefins produced by 5 to 50% versus a traditional mixed-feed steam cracker2. Honeywell’s latest technology expands our portfolio of offerings to help meet the growing demand for efficient petrochemical solutions.

“The petrochemical industry faces strong competition and challenges in obtaining raw materials globally,” said Matt Spalding, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions in MENA. “Our technology helps to enable more efficient production of ethylene and propylene, two chemicals which are in high demand, while also helping our customers lower their carbon emissions.”

This new solution is a part of Honeywell’s Integrated Olefin Suite technology portfolio – a first-of-its-kind in the industry that creates differentiated offerings to enhance the production of light olefins.

[1] Based on two UOP crude to petrochemical studies (ID#0033, ID#0034) using standard UOP simulation models and methodologies to estimate net cash margin (NCM) as applied to two different greenfield petrochemical configurations and use cases.

2 Based on three UOP crude to petrochemical studies (ID#0033, ID#0034, ID#0035) using standard UOP simulation models and methodologies to estimate combined Scope 1-3 emissions as applied to three different greenfield petrochemical configurations and use cases.

BENGALURU: Honda R&D (India) Private Limited (HRID), a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and functioning as Honda’s research and development arm for motorcycles & power products in India, today Opened its new Solution R&D Center in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Honda has set a global target of achieving carbon neutrality in all its products and corporate activities by 2050. The company is working to make a wide range of its products carbon-neutral in terms of their power sources. In the motorcycle business, Honda aims to achieve carbon neutrality for all its motorcycle products during the 2040s.

Shifting to India where economic development continues, in 2021, the Indian government announced at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (also known as 26th Conference of the Parties, COP26) that the country will work towards achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070.

Under such environmental change, Honda believes that to continue to be chosen by customers, the company needs not only to respond to electrification trends but also to create new value outside of the established framework and provide more attractive products and services.

The Solution R&D Center will incorporate advanced mobility technologies into electrified vehicle development more quickly, as well as work on software and connected services through ‘co-creating’ open innovation by adopting technologies and ideas of research and development companies.

INDIA: ASUS today announced that it has been recognized, for the second consecutive time, as part of the prestigious Climate Leaders Asia-Pacific. This 2023 recognition comes from the joint efforts of the Financial Times and Statista, who have acknowledged ASUS for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Within the ranking this year, ASUS has emerged as a leader in a number of areas related to environmental sustainability efforts. For example, the company has shown its strong commitment to sustainability by ranking in the top 15 in terms of the total reduction of core emissions and in the top 25 for the reduction of core emissions intensity. This recognition showcases the company’s relentless pursuit of sustainability and reinforces its position as a responsible corporate citizen actively contributing to mitigating climate change.

As a company, ASUS takes immense pride in its dedication to sustainability and continuously seeks new and innovative ways to reduce its environmental impact. Guided by four pillars — climate action, circular economy, responsible manufacturing, and value creation — ASUS has set science-based targets and implemented a three-stage approach focusing on climate action. These three stages focus on enhancing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy usage, and investing in innovative, green technologies. This award is a testament to the company’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainable practices within the technology industry. By pushing boundaries and driving innovation, ASUS strives to create a cleaner, greener future.

One of the key targets for ASUS is to achieve 100% renewable energy usage across its global operations by 2035. By 2050, the company aims to have invested in innovative technologies to eliminate its remaining carbon emissions and gradually work towards achieving net zero. The company’s focus on expanding its range of eco-friendly products has also played a crucial role in its journey toward a sustainable future.

To further its net-zero roadmap, ASUS conducts low-carbon product innovation by focusing on conducting carbon footprint verification, carbon reduction strategies, and building carbon-neutral products. To achieve this, ASUS focuses on three key steps. Firstly, calculating the product’s lifecycle using international standards and third-party verification, as well as publishing a certified carbon footprint report. Secondly, employing eco-friendly materials, energy-saving design, and carbon reduction strategies within its supply chain to decrease the product’s carbon footprint. Finally, offsetting the remaining emissions with premium nature-based carbon credits that are verified by a third party for transparency and credibility.

Major examples of these endeavors include ExpertBook B9 (B9400), the world’s first commercial carbon footprint and carbon neutral-verified laptop, and Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304), the world’s slimmest OLED laptop, which is also carbon neutral. Beyond their sleek design, high performance, and ultra-portability, these devices emphatically keep sustainability in mind. For the second year, the Financial Times and Statista have collaborated to create the Climate Leaders Asia-Pacific 2023 list. Using extensive research and analysis, the list recognizes companies that excelled in reducing their core emissions intensity, specifically their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions relative to revenue, between 2016 and 2021. These companies also demonstrated their commitment to addressing climate change by engaging in initiatives such as collaborating with the CDP (Climate Disclosure Project) and SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative), as well as ensuring transparency in reporting their Scope 3 emissions. Other additional criteria have been added this year,
