BY Dr J Kannan, Senior Consultant – Adult Cardiology, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru

A father’s health is the cornerstone of a family’s strength and happiness. When a father is healthy, he has the energy, presence, and resilience to support his loved ones through life’s challenges and joys. But when stress, work pressure, and lifestyle habits take a toll on his heart, the entire family feels the impact. Fathers often put their family’s needs before their own, yet neglecting their heart health can lead to serious consequences, not just for themselves, but for those who depend on them most.

How Stress Takes a Toll on a Father’s Heart

Stress is an invisible burden many fathers carry silently. The constant juggling of work deadlines, financial responsibilities, and family demands can create chronic stress that silently damages the heart. Scientific research shows that prolonged stress triggers the release of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which raise blood pressure, increase heart rate, and cause arteries to narrow. Over time, this can accelerate the build-up of plaque in arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

For fathers, this means that the emotional weight of everyday pressures isn’t just mental—it’s physical. Ignoring stress or pushing through the daily grind without adequate care can lead to serious cardiovascular problems, robbing fathers of the vitality and longevity needed to be present for their children and partners.

What to Watch For: Subtle Signs of Heart Trouble

Heart attacks don’t always come with dramatic chest pain, or pain in the arm, neck, or jaw; often, the signs are subtle and easy to dismiss. Recurrent chest discomfort—especially if it lasts days and feels like pressure on the chest or breastbone—should not be ignored.

Feeling unusually full after a light meal, persistent acidity, unexplained nausea, or even fatigue during simple activities like walking short distances may all signal reduced blood flow to the heart. If you feel faint, especially to the point of having to sit down or feeling disoriented, it could be a red flag.

Men usually brush these signs off as gas, poor sleep, indigestion, or age-related fatigue. But recognising these symptoms early could mean the difference between life and death. Don’t wait—talk to your family and get checked by a doctor.

Tips for Fathers to Protect Their Heart Health

The good news is that fathers can take simple, effective steps to safeguard their heart health and, by extension, their family’s future:

1. Move Your Body Daily

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or even playing with your kids can strengthen your heart, lower blood pressure, and reduce stress. Remember, even short bursts of activity throughout the day add up.

2. Choose Heart-Healthy Foods

Opt for a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats like olive oil and fatty fish. Limit processed foods, excess salt, and sugary treats. Small changes, like swapping fried snacks for nuts or adding more greens to meals, can make a big difference.

3. Manage Stress Mindfully

Incorporate stress-relief practices into your routine—try meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or simply taking quiet moments to unwind. Physical activity helps reduce stress hormones naturally. Don’t hesitate to seek support from loved ones or professionals when life feels overwhelming.

4. Prioritise Sleep and Rest

Quality sleep is essential for heart health. Aim for at least seven hours of restful sleep each night to allow your body and mind to recover.

5. Regular Health Check-Ups

Keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels through regular medical check-ups. Early detection and management of risk factors can prevent serious heart problems.

The Heartbeat of the Family

A father’s heart is more than a vital organ—it’s the pulse that keeps the family moving forward. By prioritising his heart health, a father not only protects himself but also sets a powerful example for his children about the importance of self-care and resilience. Taking these steps today ensures that more tomorrows are filled with love, laughter, and shared memories.

Remember, your family needs you to be strong and healthy, because a father’s heart is truly the heart of the family.

By: Dr Arun Kumar Ullegaddi, Consultant, Cardiology Adult, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru

It is a common misconception that heart disease primarily affects men. In reality, however, it stands as the leading cause of death among women worldwide. Still, a lot of women don’t realise they’re at risk until their symptoms worsen, which can result in lost chances for early detection and treatment.

Unique Heart Health Challenges for Women

Women face distinct challenges when it comes to cardiovascular disease (CVD), due to one of reasons including lifestyle, biological, and hormonal. Unlike men, women may experience different symptoms during a heart attack, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, jaw or neck discomfort, and unexplained anxiety or sweating. Eventually, these atypical symptoms often lead to misdiagnosis or delayed care.

Additionally, women are more prone to microvascular disease, which affects the small arteries of the heart and is harder to detect and treat. Hormonal changes, especially during menopause when oestrogen levels drop, increase the risk of atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and blood clots.

Key Risk Factors for Women’s Heart Disease

Several risk factors contribute to heart disease in women, some of which are unique or more impactful compared to men:

High blood pressure and high cholesterol: These are major contributors to heart disease risk in both sexes but may affect women differently, especially after age 60.

Diabetes: Women with diabetes are two to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than men with diabetes.

Hormonal changes: Menopause and surgical removal of ovaries reduce protective oestrogen, increasing cardiovascular risks.

Pregnancy complications: Conditions such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes elevate a woman’s lifetime risk of hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

Obesity and sedentary lifestyle: Post-menopausal women are more prone to obesity, particularly abdominal fat, which significantly raises heart disease risk. Physical inactivity is also a critical factor, with many women not getting enough exercise to protect their heart health.

Smoking: Women who smoke have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks than men who smoke.

Autoimmune diseases: Women disproportionately suffer from autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, which increase cardiovascular risk.

Why Prioritising Heart Health Matters

Cardiovascular disease accounts for about 30 per cent of deaths in women globally, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. Yet, awareness remains low, with fewer than one in 10 women perceiving heart disease as their greatest health risk. This gap in awareness, combined with underdiagnosis and suboptimal care, puts women at greater risk of fatal outcomes.

However, heart diseases are largely preventable. Lifestyle changes such as adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and soluble fibre, maintaining regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco, and moderating alcohol intake can dramatically reduce risk. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar is also essential for early detection as well as management.

A Call to Action for Women

Women of all ages must understand the significance of heart health. When they are aware of their particular risk factors and symptoms, women are more equipped to take preventative action and seek prompt medical care. To address this unique set of cardiovascular needs in women, healthcare practitioners must also raise awareness and customise care.

As mothers and caregivers, women often prioritise the health of their families over their own. Yet, a mother’s heart is the cornerstone of her family’s well-being. Prioritising cardiac health is not just a personal necessity but a vital step in sustaining the strength and vitality of future generations.

By embracing heart-healthy habits and advocating for better awareness and care, women can beat heart disease and continue to nurture their families with the strength of a healthy heart.

MUMBAI: USV Pvt Ltd, recently launched Q-rite tablets, containing 200 milligrams (mg) of Quinidine Sulphate for patients with rare irregular heartbeat conditions. This launch marks the much-needed commercial availability of Quinidine Sulphate tablets in India. This milestone underscores USV’s commitment to advancing quality patient care as a reliable healthcare partner.

India faces one of the highest burdens of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) globally. Approximately 40% of cardiac patients show signs of heart rhythm disorders, with a concerning 22% at increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest due to arrhythmia. Alarmingly, most of these patients are under the age of 40. Keeping this overlooked demographic in mind, USV took the step to commercially launch Q rite tablets in India, to improve patient outcomes.

Prashant Tewari, Managing Director, USV “We have been empathetic to the needs of patients especially individuals with cardiac conditions, and do not have an option for its management, the launch of Q rite tablets in India underscores our vision of enhancing accessibility. Our commitment to niche medication will offer targeted solutions that significantly improve patient outcomes.”

Elaborating on the importance of the launch, Dr. Aditya Kapoor, President of the Indian Society of Electrocardiology (ISE), and Dr. Ketan Mehta, Honorary General-Secretary (ISE) mentioned in a joint statement that “Quinidine being an old yet versatile multipurpose antiarrhythmic drug, its availability in India shall adequately address the need of a select group of patient population.”

Q rite tablets is currently available at pharmacies in select hospitals and through online pharmaceutical retailer Tata 1mg.

Valve Replacement without Open Surgery Marks Hospital’s First

DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, and Dr. Anmol Sonawane Partner to Launch Valve Clinic

PIMPRI: In an inspiring blend of advanced technology and compassionate healthcare, DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, has successfully performed its first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure on an 83-year-old male patient, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s history and the launch of its new dedicated Valve Specialty Clinic in partnership with Dr. Anmol Sonawane, Director – TAVI & Structural Heart Specialist. This clinic promises advanced cardiac care every Monday, enhancing access to cutting-edge treatments for the residents of Pune and beyond.

TAVI, a groundbreaking heart valve replacement method, involves no open-heart surgery, incisions, general anesthesia, or ventilators, allowing patients to be discharged as early as 1-2 days. The procedure performed on June 7 saved the life of the elderly patient who had struggled with severe symptoms like heart failure, leg swelling, and breathlessness for over six months. After thorough evaluations and considering the patient’s frail condition and the risks associated with traditional surgery, Dr. Sonawane recommended TAVI. This less invasive technique involves inserting a new valve via a catheter through the femoral artery in the leg, reaching the heart, and deploying the new valve without the need for a major surgical incision.

Dr. Anmol Sonawane, a leading pioneer in TAVI and valve replacement, has successfully performed over 1500 surgeries across India and in 36 countries, aiding in the development of TAVR programs worldwide. This technique offers new hope for elderly patients. A specialist in TAVI and Structural Heart specialist, Dr. Sonawane is collaborating with DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, to launch a specialized Valve Clinic.

TAVI is primarily utilized for patients who suffer from Aortic Stenosis—a condition where the aortic valve narrows, hindering blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. As patients age, valves may calcify and degenerate, significantly impacting their quality of life. Traditional surgery to replace these valves involves open-heart surgery, which poses significant risks, especially for elderly patients or those with multiple health issues.

The successful implementation of TAVI at DPU Super Specialty Hospital highlights the significant advancements in interventional cardiology, spearheaded by Dr. Sonawane’s expertise.

Dr. P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, expressed his pride in the hospital’s commitment to top-tier patient-centric care. “Our focus has always been on integrating the latest technologies to improve patient outcomes. The introduction of this specialty clinic is a testament to our dedication to advancing healthcare. Our state-of-the-art facilities combined with top-notch expertise allow us to deliver exceptional care, particularly in specialized fields like TAVI,” he stated.

Dr. Bhagyashree P. Patil, Pro-Chancellor, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of technology in future healthcare solutions. “There is nothing more valuable than saving a human life. Hence, giving our patients the priceless gift of a healthy life remains our topmost priority as a trusted healthcare institute. I visit the patients, monitor their recovery, and progress, and stay connected with the team 24/7 to ensure that no stone is left unturned in providing the best possible patient care. With this new clinic, we are setting new benchmarks in providing access to globally recognized treatments right here in Pune,” she remarked.

It underscores the hospital’s role as a pioneer in adopting technologies that offer safer alternatives and promote quicker recoveries.

Commenting on the same, Dr. Yashraj Patil, Trustee & Treasurer, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Pimpri, Pune, said, “As Pune’s healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the Valve Specialty Clinic at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune stands as a beacon of hope and innovation, ensuring that the elderly can receive the best possible care with minimized risk, embodying the hospital’s mission of enabling healthier lives through advanced medical science. The confluence of technology with patient-centric healthcare has led to the emergence of multiple opportunities in the interest of better patient outcomes.
The perspective of Dr. Anmol Sonawane Director – of TAVI & Structural Heart Specialist, DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, said “TAVI or TAVR is a pinnacle that has redefined the process of valve replacements in the elder age groups.
The procedure was approved by the FDA in 2019 and is used to close the opening between two major blood vessels

PUNE: A team of doctors at KEM Hospital, Pune successfully conducted a Piccolo Device Closure procedure on a 23-week-old baby (male) with Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) condition. The Piccolo Device Closure procedure and that too on a 23-week baby is the first in Pune. The multi-departmental treatment was led by Paediatric Cardiologist Dr. Pankaj Sugaonkar and Senior Neonatologist Dr.Tushar Parikh. Survival of a 23-week premature baby in itself is rare; reported from Pune only once previously in 2018 by the same team at KEM Hospital Pune, led by Dr.Tushar Parikh. The hour-long procedure performed in the cath lab and led by experts was assisted by a team of neonatologists, sisters, and cath lab technicians.

Explaining the case Dr. Tushar Parikh, Senior Neonatologist at KEM Hospital, Pune said that the premature baby was in critical condition when born. As a part of our NICU procedure for such babies, we conduct point-of-care functional eco-cardiography. This is done to find out the cardio-vascular adaptation of the babies. The baby was diagnosed with Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

PDA is a congenital heart defect where there is a persistent opening between two major blood vessels. An opening called the ductus arteriosus is part of a baby’s blood flow system in the womb. It usually closes shortly after birth. If it remains open, it’s called a patent ductus arteriosus. A large opening if untreated can result in many complications.

Dr. Parikh added that in such cases we give a standard dose of medicines. However, the opening between the two blood vessels could not be closed. This was causing excess blood load on the lungs and the baby was ventilator-dependent for about one and a half months. We were just not able to get the baby off-ventilator due to this heart condition. After counseling the parents, we decided to go for the Piccolo Device Closure procedure. The weight of the baby had also increased from about 586 gm when born to 1600 gm during this time.

Dr. Pankaj Sugaonkar, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at KEM Hospital, Pune said that in this case, since the medicines were unable to close the opening the only option was surgery. Before Piccolo Device, heart surgeries were the only option to close this opening where incisions are made from the back side between the ribs. But in this case, the condition of the baby was extremely critical and challenging. The baby was constantly on ventilatory support and not stable for surgery. The innovative Piccolo Device Procedure is a boon for such babies and was lifesaving in this case.

Dr Sugaonkar added that the procedure is performed in a cath lab. The device is in the form of three disc-shaped or dumbbell-shaped layers made of metal. It is loaded in a delivery system and inserted through a small 3mm incision at the inguinal region and guided through vessels to the heart to seal the opening. To help this happen catheter and a sheath in a crossed manner are guided through the vessel on which the device is placed and taken on the descending thoracic aorta after which the device is taken to seal the opening. ‘ In an extremely premature neonate it all becomes very challenging’ he added.

In six to nine months, a tissue layer grows over the device and becomes part of the heart. This is a one-time procedure and the device need not be changed, nor are any medications required. The procedure has many advantages. Lesser surgical marks, lower risk of infection, and faster recovery make this procedure more viable in such critical cases.

The baby is now 10 months old and doing fine added Dr. Parikh. We are happy to see the baby doing fine. His regular follow-up echo showed the device was in place and the baby’s gaining weight, added Dr. Sugaonkar
