The recent spike in COVID-19 cases linked to the XFG variant has pushed the total count to 49 in Bengal, prompting intensified health surveillance. With six cases confirmed in Kolkata, authorities have ramped up genomic sequencing and contact tracing to monitor the situation closely. The emergence of this new variant in urban clusters has renewed concerns about virus evolution and potential community spread, particularly in densely populated areas.

XFG is a recombinant sub-lineage of the Omicron family, formed by the merging of LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. It carries key spike protein mutations that enhance its transmissibility and enable partial escape from immunity. While the variant is highly contagious, current studies indicate it does not lead to severe illness in most cases.

Commonly reported symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, fatigue, body aches, headache, and loss of appetite. These have largely been mild and have not required hospitalization. Health experts note that the clinical presentation of the XFG variant remains similar to earlier Omicron strains, marked by high transmissibility but typically low severity. However, due to its ability to partially evade immunity, even those previously infected or vaccinated are advised to remain cautious and monitor symptoms closely.

West Bengal’s active COVID-19 caseload has surpassed 700, with one death reported in the past 24 hours. Other variants, such as JN.1 and NB.1.8.1, also remain in circulation.

While no lockdown measures have been introduced, health authorities urge citizens to follow basic precautions—wear masks in crowded areas, ensure good indoor ventilation, and avoid large gatherings. With the monsoon season further increasing the risk of respiratory infections, these preventive steps are especially critical.

PUNE: “The Indian retail sector has an enormous potential to boost and empower the Indian economy, but there are very few players in this sector and those who run their businesses can’t compete in the international market due to the burden of various taxes. A possible solution could be to offer tax relief to them and the common people and simultaneously chalk out such policies which will encourage the NRIs and international businesses to bring FDI in this sector,” said Masala King Dhananjay Datar, CMD, Adil Group of Super Stores, UAE, while expressing his expectations from the upcoming Union Budget.

He said, “There are opportunities as well as challenges before the Indian retail sector today. Post the COVID pandemic, prices of essential commodities, products, and services witnessed a considerable increase, but at the same time, the income of the common man or salaried class did not increase to match the challenging situation. People are curtailing the consumption and expenditure of daily essential commodities, which is reflected in reducing the volume of business in the retail sector. Should the government lower the taxes and give relief to individual taxpayers, they would be able to purchase more from their monthly disposable income, which will help to increase consumption. Also, retailers burdened under higher taxes and facing stiff competition in international markets are looking towards the upcoming budget with hope.”

He further said, “India has a large population which created a huge market in the world. But even if the volume of business in the Indian retail sector is massive, there are very few players here. Many Indians successfully run their business abroad but seldom generate employment in India. The wages and salaries of workers in the domestic market are inadequate and disappointing as compared to markets abroad. If the government attracts NRIs and International businesses by giving tax concessions and/ or encouraging FDI in the retail sector, the result will be the generation of more jobs and direct as well as indirect employment. Workers will get handsome salaries. Moreover, when the number of players increases in the sector, the competition will reduce the prices of commodities and products, thus benefiting the public at large.”

“The Indian retail sector has a huge potential to grow and the coming era is promising for India. A decade ago, India was a buyer’s market, but today it has transformed into a seller’s market. Many countries in the world are desperately eyeing India for a supply of food grains and other agricultural commodities. The demand for Indian products and services is rising. Let me give an example of my company. We are in the retail sector and operating in the GCC region. Last year, we earned a commendable 25 percent business growth as a result of increased demands for Indian groceries and foodstuff. If we develop a comprehensive ecosystem for the retail sector in India, it will surely prove to be a catalyst for the Indian economy to transform into a Superpower, much ahead of the targeted period,” concluded Dr. Datar.

HYDERABAD: Dr K Anand Kumar, Managing Director of Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) has been conferred with the “Vocational Excellence Award 2023-24” at a grand function organized by the Rotary Club of Pollachi in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Kumar has joined some legendary personalities such as Dr. K. Sivan, ISRO, and Dr. M. Annadurai, ISRO, who were the previous recipients of this prestigious award.

Dr. K Anand Kumar has played a crucial role in advancing India’s expertise in producing vaccines and biosimilars, ensuring that critical biologic treatments are more accessible to patients, both within the country and overseas. Dr. Kumar-led IIL has created a “One Health” organization, that championed disease control through affordable and accessible vaccination for both humans and animals. Engaged in vaccine development in the past thirty years, he has been influential in providing accessibility of affordable animal and human vaccines to 60+ developing nations. He has relentlessly worked towards “Make in India”, safeguarding lives against deadly diseases, and advancing research and development efforts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kumar channeled efforts to repurpose vaccine manufacturing facilities in IIL and roll out the COVID-19 vaccine drug substance quickly. This has not only helped India’s self-reliant objective but also earned him praise from the Government of India. To be self-sufficient in vaccine production, he has strengthened IIL’s position in the Indian as well as global vaccine market and contributed substantially towards health efforts. Through his advocacy for philanthropic strategies, Dr. Kumar-led IIL has adopted several schools, while supporting their infrastructural needs and providing meals and uniforms to the students. Indian Immunologicals has provided fortified, flavored milk to 6,000+ rural students daily, supported equipment for setting up biogas plants for waste management, and uplifted more than 400+ rural households. The company has established an Oxygen generation plant at Telangana Institute of Medical Science, saving several lives against COVID-19. Dr. Kumar’s vision is to create a healthy and inclusive space along with making Thiruvananthapuram rabies-free.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. K Anand Kumar, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited said, “It is a great honor to accept this award from the prestigious Rotary Club, recognizing my efforts in the field of vaccines. This will further encourage me to rededicate myself towards a greater role in disease control in the nation”.

Among many other achievements, the Rotary Club has always been in the forefront and contributed immensely to the nation towards the control of Polio disease by actively carrying out relentless Pulse Polio campaigns.

Earlier, Dr. Anand Kumar received several other awards which include the prestigious – ‘Best Alumnus Award’ from his alma mater, “Vector Control Research Center, ICMR” and “PSG Sons and Charities”.

It would have been easy to let COVID dominate the major ground-breaking pillars of the world – the social sector, financial sector, political activities, travel, tourism, etc. However, countries across the globe united in their fight against this deadly disease and made sure to come up with policies and schemes that protected their citizens and also other people across spheres. Combating the pandemic along with reducing the consequences by coming up with more efficient ways to deal with its effects became the topmost priority for all. The Indian government too came up with many different measures that were much needed in this scenario. The pandemic led to a huge shift towards digitization and making things possible online without having to step out of the house.

Some major initiatives by the Indian government post-covid were:

The launch of the ABHA card – The Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India in 2021. Since most people were instructed to download the Aarogya Setu app on their phones, they made all other services like the ABHA accessible on this app as well. The ABHA card is a 14-digit unique identification number that people can use to generate their health accounts. Here, you can store all your relevant medical information from your history to diagnostic tests, images, prescriptions, etc. This can be your cumulative health record and you will not have to carry a paper trail everywhere you go. By sharing this identification number with hospitals and other healthcare workers, they will also be able to view your data. Additionally, you can also download your covid 19 certificate with the help of this platform. The ABHA card made it easy for many people in India with a long and detailed history to be able to effectively share their details with the concerned people with their consent. You can create and delete the information on the ABHA card whenever you wish to.

The Cowin application – The need of the hour post the devastating effects of COVID was to stop and reduce the spread of the virus as much as possible. The best way to do so would be with the help of a vaccine that would immunize the population against the virus. The question was, how could a country with a population as large as India manage to carry out the vaccination of maximum people for proper immunity to occur? This resulted in the inception of the cowin gov in. This was an online platform where people in India could register themselves and book a slot for their vaccines. One could choose a vaccine based on their district, pin code, paid or unpaid, type of vaccine, availability of centers and slots, etc. This was a revolutionary program that helped India in its fight against COVID. Soon, most Indian citizens began to register themselves, their family members, and other people in and around their households on the platform. One could download their certificates and receive alerts on their phones reminding them of their next doses.

Benefits of digitization of healthcare – The primary change that the healthcare system saw was in terms of fewer papers and more work online via digital platforms. This enabled all the sectors across the healthcare ecosystem to manage things more efficiently and quickly.

Providing doctors with online access to medical records and data beforehand was beneficial. This also helped the doctors not miss out on any relevant and vital detail that could be crucial in treatment.

Sharing these records across professionals, if need be, would also be possible.

Insurance agents and providers would access your history and information to offer the right kind of support in terms of medical claims and the right insurance packages.

Application for the vaccination, downloading the certificate, etc can be done online.

No need to stand in long lines for any of these processes – this will also ensure faster treatment and more capacity for doctors to see patients of all kinds.

Not only in tier-I cities but these facilities were designed to be accessible to all citizens pan-India. Anyone in any city with a smartphone and internet connection could reap the benefits of accessing proper healthcare facilities and medical treatments without discrimination.

COVID has had a fatal impact on many industries, however, it did help streamline the medical atmosphere to a great extent. Ensure that you are a part of this change by creating your ABHA card and cowin account.
