NEW DELHI: Aayam, the New Delhi-based Bharatanatyam institution founded by Guru Sindhu Mishra, presented the third edition of Nrityadhara, an annual showcase of classical dance, at LTG Auditorium. The production brought together over 100 dancers, ranging from beginners to seasoned disciples, in a celebration of artistic accomplishment and the continuity of one of Bharatanatyam’s most distinguished lineages. The event was graced by renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and former Member of Rajya Sabha, Sonal Mansingh, who attended as the Chief Guest.

Conceived and directed by Guru Sindhu Mishra, Nrityadhara 3 showcased the Bharatanatyam bani of Guru K.N. Dandayudhapani Pillai, a tradition known for its rhythmic sophistication, striking visual geometry, and dramatic movement vocabulary. The lineage was transmitted to Sindhu Mishra by her guru, Sri K.N. Dakshinamoorthy, and remains the foundation of her pedagogy and choreography at Aayam, which she established over two decades ago.

The programme opened with an effervescent rendition of a Kriti, Ananda Nartana Ganapatim Bhavaye, performed by senior disciples Apoorva Bhatnagar, Satakshi Gupta, and Vibhooti Bhardwaj, setting a tone of devotion and artistic inquiry. Aayam’s youngest dancers followed with Angikam Bhuvanam, an invocatory shloka introduced to beginners as an offering to Lord Shiva, presented with sincerity and enthusiasm by the little dancers.

Senior disciple Arundhati Chakravarty then brought warmth and emotional depth to Krishna Nee Begane Baro, a beloved composition depicting Yashoda’s search for her mischievous son Krishna. Junior students followed with Mushak Vaahan, a Pushpanjali dedicated to Lord Ganesha, showcasing the young dancers’ enthusiasm and dedication through a combination of nritta and abhinaya.

This was followed by another presentation by the intermediate students- Jatiswaram in Ragamalika set to Misra Chapu tala, foregrounding their command over intricate rhythmic structures and elegant korvais.

Senior disciple Tanusha Tyagi performed beautifully a padam, “तन छार याल कपाल भूषन,” which is also an unusual excerpt from Ramcharitmanas. It relates an episode from Shiva and Parvati’s wedding celebrations, where the people of Himachal, upon seeing Shiva’s wedding procession, are shocked to see a terrifying band of ghosts, demons, and spirits. Maena, the mother, unwilling to believe that her beautiful daughter is fated to marry such a fiend, attempts to convince Parvati
into abandoning the wedding, to the extent that she is ready to give up her life for it!

The programme was followed with a piece, the well-known Sri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhajamana, which was admirably presented by the beginner batch of adult students. For many of them, this was their first experience on stage as they showcased the diligence with which they had grasped the intricacies of the choreography in a very short time. The evening concluded with a thillana set to Paras raga and Adi tala, performed by the senior batch of Aayam. The vibrant choreography showcased intricate rhythmic patterns and quick footwork, offering a quintessential visualisation of the Dandayudhapani Pillai bani.

Commenting on the evening, Guru Sindhu Mishra said, “Nrityadhara is not merely a performance, it is a mirror of the learning process itself. When over a hundred students come together on one stage, each at a different point in their journey, what you witness is not just technique but devotion, discipline, and the living continuity of a tradition. The bani of Guru K.N. Dandayudhapani Pillai carries within it a vocabulary that has been shaped over generations, and it is our privilege and responsibility to carry it forward. This evening belongs to every student who has trusted the process and every guru who came before us.”

Nrityadhara 3 stood as a testament to Aayam’s enduring commitment to classical excellence and not merely preserving a tradition, but passing it forward, one dancer at a time.

An Extraordinary Journey Through Ellora’s Kailasa Temple and Caves, Set Against the Backdrop of Maharashtra Day

Photography Exhibition by Neelesh Kale Scheduled from April 28 to May 3

PUNE: Art enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to view photographs that shed light on various facets of the Kailasa Temple—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a globally renowned marvel of architecture—as well as the Jain and Buddhist caves located at Ellora (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar). This occasion marks the hosting of a photography exhibition featuring panoramic images captured by the Lalit Kala Akademi Award winner Neelesh Kale. Titled ‘Ellorama,’ this exhibition is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, April 28, to Sunday, May 3, at the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery on Ghole Road. Connoisseurs will be able to experience this exhibition daily between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Please note that this exhibition is free and open to all.

The inauguration of the ‘Ellorama’ photography exhibition will be held on Tuesday, April 28, at 5:00 PM, at the hands of Dr. G.B. Deglurkar, a world-renowned iconologist and a leading expert on the Kailasa Temple, Prof. Medha Kulkarni, Member of Parliament, and Jayant B. Joshi, renowned artist. During the event, Dr. G.B. Deglurkar will interact with the audience. Additionally, as part of the exhibition’s accompanying programs, Indologist Dr. Rahul Deshpande will engage with the audience on Thursday, April 30, at 5:00 PM, delivering a talk titled ‘Exploring Ellora.’ Please note that both of these events are open and free on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.

Providing further details regarding the photography exhibition, Neelesh Kale stated, “The Kailash Temple, carved by the Rashtrakutas, dates back to the period between 756 AD and 773 AD. These 34 caves are carved within an area spanning approximately two kilometers. Among them, Cave No. 16—the Kailasa Temple—is renowned globally as the largest monolithic temple (a temple carved from a single rock) in existence. The ‘Ellorama’ exhibition features photographs that shed light on the Ellora Caves—and specifically the Kailasa Temple—from a multitude of perspectives. This exhibition comprises a curated selection of photographs chosen from a vast collection captured using the techniques of ‘photogrammetry’. Furthermore, another highlight of this exhibition will be the inclusion of a precise 3D (three-dimensional) model created from these photographs using this advanced technology.”

Kale also expressed with confidence that, with the aid of 3D Vista and Cloud Compare technologies, visitors to the exhibition would gain comprehensive information—including where to begin their exploration of the caves, exactly what to observe at each stage, the specific features and unique attributes of the structures they view, and their precise dimensions (length, width, and height). Moreover, attendees will be treated to a ‘guided journey’—or a ‘virtual tour’—of this UNESCO World Heritage site during the event.

KOCHI: Since its very first edition in 2012, BMW has been the official partner of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB). For the sixth Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the Kochi Biennale Foundation is curated by Nikhil Chopra with HH Art Spaces featuring 66 artist projects from more than 25 countries. The biennale opened to the public on 12 December 2025 and will last for a period of four months.

Hardeep Singh Brar, President & CEO, BMW Group India, said, “The BMW Group India is proud to continue its partnership with the sixth edition of Kochi-Muziris Biennale, a platform that celebrates creativity, dialogue, and new perspectives. Art has the power to inspire progressive thinking, and this partnership reflects our belief in innovation that moves both people and culture forward. The Biennale’s spirit of openness and exploration mirrors BMW’s philosophy of redefining possibility, and we are delighted to be a part of a movement that enriches India’s cultural landscape.”

The exhibition, the largest contemporary art biennale in South Asia and the first of its kind in India, unfolds across 29 venues in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Willingdon Islands, and Ernakulam. It sits in conversation with a constellation of exhibitions, performances, and discursive programmes which are set in close dialogue with Kochi’s unique geographical, social, and cultural ecology.

Embracing process as methodology, this edition places ‘friendship economies’ as the very scaffolding of the exhibition. The curatorial vision acknowledges bodies as a landscape of time, a vessel of labour, joy, and loss, and invites the visitors to think through ‘embodied histories of those that came before us and continue to live within us in the form of cells, stories, and techniques.

CHICAGO, IL: The vibrant sounds of dhol beats, patriotic songs, and Bollywood medleys echoed across Busse Woods Grove 18 in Elk Grove Village as Desi Junction Summerfest 2025 brought thousands together for a daylong celebration of Indian culture, community, and unity.

Held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the free festival transformed the picnic grove into a bustling hub of tradition, music, and modern flair. From 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM, families, seniors, children, and volunteers reveled in a colorful blend of performances, games, food, and cultural showcases.

“This wasn’t just an event — it was a celebration of unity, culture, and community spirit,” said Jassie Parmar, Founder of Desi Junction.

A Festival of Traditions and Togetherness

The day began with Langar Sewa, a complimentary community breakfast, followed by a heartfelt opening ceremony at 10:30 AM. Elders from across India — Delhi, Mumbai, Andhra, and more — symbolically kicked off the festivities, joined by Chaudhary Singh Sahab, an ex-minister from Uttar Pradesh who flew in from India.

“This program unites people from all Indian states, showcasing India’s diversity in America,” Singh Sahab told the cheering crowd.

With free entry, free parking, shuttle service, and free ice cream for kids under five, inclusivity remained at the heart of Summerfest.

The Dance Dhamaka competition turned the grove into a Bollywood stage, with children and youth dazzling judges like Amit Chakraborty, who recently performed with Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan.

Winners included:

Chicago Dance Varsity (Kids Category)

Ashke Bhangra Group, Arthi’s Dance Academy, and Shelzar Dance Company (Youth & Adults)

Evening highlights included a Sundowner Dance Party and a high-energy Bollywood Antakshari finale that had the crowd singing classics together.

Games, Fashion, and Community Spirit

From tug-of-war and lemon spoon races to scavenger hunts and Antakshari rounds, families played for prizes including free tickets to concerts by Falguni Pathak, Badshah, and Kanwar Grewal.

The Saree Fashion Walk drew loud cheers as pageant winners and brand ambassadors — including Sara Bongale (Mrs. Midwest Universe) and Nirali Desai (Miss India Illinois) — showcased elegance and cultural pride. Participants even received complimentary salon treatments, adding a modern touch to the traditional showcase.

Food stalls serving golgappe, momos, and chaat kept energy high, while vendors offered clothing, jewelry, and festive deals.

Voices of Pride and Partnership

“Summerfest 2025 is our biggest and most successful yet,” said organizers Safalya Pani and Bhairavi K Thakkar, crediting over 30 volunteers and community partners.

Suresh Bodiwala, Chairman and Founder of Asian Media USA, extended congratulations, adding:
“Events like this strengthen the bonds of the Asian diaspora in America, and we are proud to highlight them.”

Shivsrushti recreates the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj through elements such as the Sarkarwada, which reflects Maratha royal architecture, a temple dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, and several other historical structures. These are supported by stories, paintings, museum artifacts, and various installations that collectively bring the historical period to life. Currently, a growing number of visitors are coming to experience this recreation and draw inspiration from it. As a special initiative, entry to Shivsrushti is being offered at a nominal fee of ₹50, valid only until July 15. This has been made possible by a donation of ₹51 lakh from the Abhay Bhutada Foundation, Pune. Shivsrushti’s Administrative Officer, Anil Pawar, has urged citizens to take full advantage of this opportunity while it lasts.

Speaking about the overwhelming response, Pawar shared, “Since the beginning of this initiative, over 15,000 people have visited Shivsrushti in the last 15 days. With summer vacations going on, visitors can enjoy a comfortable, air-conditioned experience while immersing themselves in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj era. This initiative aims to educate the younger generations about Shivaji Maharaj’s history, his struggles, his visionary governance, and the dream of Swarajya he fought for. It is our sincere intention to spread the values of Swarajya and Swadharma envisioned by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We believe Shivsrushti, spread across a 21-acre campus in Ambegaon Budruk, Pune – 411 046, will reach more and more people“.

Visitors to Shivsrushti can explore sections such as Durgavaibhav (Fort Grandeur), Ranangann (Battlefield), a hall depicting the thrilling escape from Agra, and Shrimant Yogi, an experience that makes it feel like you’re directly interacting with Shivaji Maharaj. There’s also Simhasanadhishwar, portraying the coronation scene, and high-resolution image prints of paintings from world-renowned museums showcasing the life of Shivaji Maharaj. Other highlights include a section on his legendary battles, a replica of the Tulja Bhavani temple from Pratapgad, and the Ganga Sagar lake.

“Additionally, the Time Machine Theatre is proving to be a major attraction. Here, visitors can travel back thousands of years via a time capsule to visually and audibly experience Shivaji Maharaj’s era. Using cutting-edge technology like mapping, holography, physical effects, and a 360-degree rotating theatre, this immersive show brings history to life. Each 36-minute show in the theatre can host up to 100 people at a time, offering a truly unforgettable experience“, Pawar added.
