INDIA: Dr. Reddy’s and Nestlé Health Science Limited, a joint venture between Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (BSE: 500124, NSE: DRREDDY, NYSE: RDY, NSEIFSC: DRREDDY; along with its subsidiaries together referred to as “Dr. Reddy’s”) and Nestlé India Limited (BSE: 500790, NSE: NESTLEIND) referred hereafter as “Nestlé India”, today announced the launch of Celevida®GLP+, a specialised scientifically designed product to support optimum nutrition intake and muscle mass maintenance for sustaining metabolic and functional health for people undergoing GLP-1/GIP therapy* for management of type 2 diabetes and obesity in India.

As GLP-1/GIP–based therapies become more widely adopted in the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity, improving access to advanced treatment options for patients, it has become increasingly important to build an integrated ecosystem beyond medication. Encompassing nutrition, clinical monitoring, and long-term patient support, this ecosystem should be an enabler for sustained and holistic outcomes for patients managing type 2 diabetes and obesity. A critical component of this approach is addressing the nutritional gaps and muscle health challenges associated with these therapies to improve overall outcomes.

M.V. Ramana, CEO, Global Generics at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Limited and Director, Dr. Reddy’s and Nestlé Health Science Limited, “GLP-1 therapies represent a significant advancement in diabetes and obesity management. However, a clear unmet need remains in supporting patients beyond pharmacological treatment, particularly in addressing nutrition gaps and preserving muscle health during therapy. As patients experience changes in body composition, ensuring adequate nutrient intake and maintaining lean body mass become critical to sustaining long-term outcomes. With Celevida® GLP+, we aim to address this gap through a targeted, science-backed nutritional solution that complements pharmacological therapies and supports better overall patient outcomes in their everyday journey. As part of this commitment, we remain focused on advancing integrated, patient-centric solutions that enable more sustainable and holistic management of metabolic health.”

Insights from senior Indian clinicians highlighted a critical and often under-recognized risk: muscle loss during GLP-1/GIP therapy. Studies indicate that 25-40% of total weight loss associated with GLP-1 and dual GLP-1/GIP therapies may be attributed to lean body mass loss (1,2). Experts noted that this risk may be amplified in Indians due to inherently lower baseline skeletal muscle mass and higher body fat mass (3), which may be further compounded by chronically low protein intake of approximately 0.6g/kg/day(4). This creates a dual vulnerability, making muscle preservation not just important, but essential for long-term metabolic health.

Clinical and expert consensus recommend increasing protein intake to 1.2–1.5 g/kg/day to help preserve muscle mass during weight loss, highlighting the need for customised nutritional support (5).

Addressing this need, Celevida® GLP+ has been scientifically designed and co-created with leading endocrinologists and diabetologists to address protein gaps and preserve muscle mass and function in individuals undergoing GLP-1/GIP therapy. It is formulated using fast-absorbing whey protein isolate (WPI), known to be gentle on the gut and suitable during periods of gastrointestinal intolerance commonly associated with GLP-1/GIP therapy. Celevida® GLP+ provides 48 g of protein per 100 g, along with 100% RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). It also provides 27 essential nutrients, including vitamins A, D, and calcium. Dr. Reddy’s and Nestlé Health Science have an established presence in specialised nutrition for people with diabetes through its Celevida® Diabetes Nutrition, designed to support comprehensive diabetes management. The formulation is clinically proven to support sustained 24-hour blood glucose control and reduce HbA1c levels (6), and is characterised by a low glycaemic index(7), making it suitable for long-term metabolic management.

Celevida® GLP+ is available in a 350 g pack across pharmacies, retail outlets, and leading e-commerce platforms.

INDIA: A newly published paper in ‘The Lancet’ focuses on an unusual type of diabetes seen in undernourished populations, which needs proper documentation and deeper research to understand its complex causes and the most appropriate treatment. This follows the international consensus meeting in Vellore, India, held in January 2025, where it was called ‘type-5 diabetes’ to distinguish it from the two common varieties of diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and other rare genetic and secondary diabetes. The primary purpose of the new consensus and nomenclature is to attract the attention of multiple stakeholders to this variety of diabetes and encourage further research.

World-renowned Diabetes Researcher and Head of Diabetes Unit of KEM Hospital, Pune, Dr. Chittaranjan Yajnik, who is one of the authors, said that ‘Diabetes is usually equated with overnutrition. But it is reported repeatedly in the last 75 years that many people with diabetes are not over-nourished, obese, or overweight, especially in the developing world. They are either normal weight or lean, or even underweight. This was described as malnutrition-related diabetes. Such descriptions came from predominantly tropical countries and regions like Africa, Jamaica, and India, which have been impoverished for many centuries.

Diabetes is a complex disease caused by both genetic and environmental factors, whose influence varies across different forms. Rare genetic types result from major mutations, but most cases involve a mix of modest genetic risk and significant environmental triggers. Type 1 diabetes, seen in less than 5% of patients, results from immune-driven destruction of insulin-producing cells in genetically predisposed individuals, often triggered by infections, food components, or toxins. It usually occurs in childhood. The most common form, type 2 diabetes, accounts for over 90% of cases and results from the interaction between complex genetic factors and a multitude of environmental influences. The environment is a major driver. Emerging evidence suggests that conditions in the womb—such as poor maternal nutrition, stress, obesity, or toxins—can affect organ development and increase lifelong diabetes risk, a concept known as fetal programming. Both low and high birthweights raise this risk. Indian babies have the lowest average birthweight globally, and are particularly vulnerable. Later life factors like unhealthy diets, inactivity, stress, and poor sleep also raise diabetes risk. Indians are more prone to diabetes at a young age and at a lower BMI. This seems to be due to a unique “thin-fat” body type which results from prenatal undernutrition. Historical deprivation has worsened this trend. The most dangerous scenario to get type 2 diabetes is being born small but becoming overweight in later life. In women, it also raises the risk of gestational diabetes, which in turn increases the risk of diabetes in their children.

Due to varied genetic and environmental factors, type 2 diabetes is highly heterogeneous. It broadly includes all non-type 1, non-genetic, and non-secondary diabetes cases. Sub-grouping based on pathophysiology, complications, and treatment response began in Sweden, with India describing its own subtypes in Pune and Chennai. Unlike Western patients, Indian patients are often younger and thinner. A comparison of sub-groups of diabetes in India (Pune, Ahmedabad, and Assam) with Swedish patients showed that 2/3rds of Indian patients belonged to the relatively thin insulin-deficient variety, while 2/3rd in Sweden were obese and insulin resistant. Persistent lifelong undernutrition in the impoverished populations may lead to what is now called ‘type 5 diabetes’.

The Lancet paper summarises the current concepts that define the characteristics of type 5 diabetes patients. Broadly, they are from socio-economically deprived populations (LMICs and rural communities), have low BMI, are insulin-deficient, and have high glucose levels but do not develop ketoacidosis (unlike type 1 diabetes). On specific testing, they are insulin-sensitive. They do not show the major genetic mutations of diabetes, and their pancreas doesn’t show stones and damage. More research is needed to define the genetic basis of this subgroup.

Such cases of diabetes were called ‘malnutrition-related diabetes’. WHO had accepted it as a separate class in 1985 but withdrew the recognition in 1999 for an apparent lack of crucial data. The International Diabetes Federation recognised type 5 diabetes as a subtype of diabetes during their recent meeting in Bangkok (April 2025) and promoted establishing a working group to further investigate this variety of diabetes. Dr. Yajnik added that this recognition will help improve acceptance of the condition and attract funding for research. India is expected to make a substantial contribution to this activity.

The Way Forward

Type-5 diabetes is not just a matter of nomenclature but a call for action. “If Type-2 diabetes demands that people eat less and walk more, Type-5 diabetes poses novel challenges – these patients are already eating less and working hard,” noted Dr. Yajnik. “There is an urgent need to study its genetic, intrauterine, epigenetic, and nutritional underpinnings, and design treatments accordingly.”

With undernutrition re-emerging globally due to climate change, migration, famine, and conflicts, Type-5 diabetes may assume far-reaching implications. Its proper documentation and research could pave the way for preventive strategies and tailored treatments that address both ends of the nutrition spectrum.

PUNE: The Association for Diabetes and Obesity Reversal (ADORE), a Pune-based organization, has guided individuals in losing weight and controlling diabetes without medication through the Dixit Lifestyle. According to data from ADORE’s Diabetes Reversal Counselling Center, 3,500 patients have registered to lose weight or manage diabetes, with an average weight loss of 6.2 kg over six months. Out of these, 3000 patients are from Pune city and its surrounding areas.

Furthermore, approximately 398 diabetic patients have been able to reduce their HbA1c levels to below 6.5 without medication for at least three months, with 365 of them being from Pune and its surrounding areas. This information was shared by Dr. Jagannath Dixit, a renowned diabetologist and proponent of the Dixit diet. Dr. Dixit also mentioned that lakhs of people from India and abroad have benefited from the Dixit diet.

ADORE’s center has helped 35–40 patients with very high blood sugar to control diabetes without medicines, and 4 patients have successfully quit tobacco while following the Dixit lifestyle, he added.ADORE’s Trustee Balasaheb Kadam, Dr. Jayant Navrange, and Dr. Veda Nalawade were also present at the press conference.

The ADORE center in Pune has now been moved to a bigger space above the Mahindra Unnati Showroom in Apex Colony near Nal Stop on Law College Road, for the convenience of patients. This space has been provided by the charitable organization Ram Padma Godbole Foundation. The center will operate from Monday to Saturday between 5 PM and 9 PM. Dr. Dixit said that all medical check-ups and counselling services at this center will be completely free of cost. Also, this year, Infosys Foundation has once again extended financial support to ADORE’s social service work.

Dr. Dixit explained that Type 2 diabetes is caused by a bad lifestyle and can be controlled without medicine by eating two meals a day and exercising 45 minutes daily. Many patients have successfully managed diabetes this way, and it doesn’t require special foods or costs; it’s simple and free.

“With financial help from Infosys Foundation, ADORE launched the ‘Infosys Foundation Diabetes Care Program’ centers in Pune and Nagpur in November-December 2022. A center in Nashik, funded by CTR Company, runs daily. ADORE also has centers in Thane, Kalyan, Sangli, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Kolhapur, Solapur, Vile Parle, Surat, Belgaum, and Madgaon, operating one to three days a week. Recently, new centers opened in Badlapur and Bhayandar”, said Dr. Dixit.

Based on patient data from the diabetes reversal center, numerous research papers have been published. One such paper, published in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine in February 2023, was honored as the ‘Best Research Paper’ of the year.

Considering the severity of the diabetes epidemic, there are plans to establish more such centers in cities across Maharashtra and India. For this, support from NGOs and corporate sponsors is essential. “We are making special efforts to sustain these centers through community participation,” Dr. Dixit concluded.

According to a study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, 136 million people in India, or 15.3% of the population, may be living with pre diabetes. This is a significant increase from 2017 when 6–15% of the population was estimated to have prediabetes. [1]With a rising tide of pre-diabetic cases in India, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to manage your health. Clean, mindful eating is key to maintaining blood sugar levels and can even reverse pre-diabetes. Dr. Rohini Patil, MBBS and nutritionist, emphasizes the importance of incorporating specific foods into your diet to control blood sugar before it escalates into diabetes. Alongside dietary changes, she advises an active lifestyle, avoiding ultra-processed foods, and engaging in regular physical activities like post-meal walks to curb blood sugar spikes.

Almonds Almonds are protein-dense, contain healthy fats, and are rich in fiber, all of which help regulate blood sugar. Two new research studies published last year authored by Dr. Anoop Misra and Dr Seema Gulati showed that a simple addition of almonds to the diet may help reduce the burden of diabetes. More specifically, a handful of almonds eaten 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner for three months reversed prediabetes to normal blood sugar levels in nearly one-quarter of the people studied – improvements as potent as taking prescription diabetes medication. Diabetes researchers described this reversal from prediabetes to normal blood glucose regulation as “the holy grail of medicine.” Therefore, Dr. Patil recommends a handful of almonds daily, whether as a snack or in salads and yogurt, to stabilize blood sugar and curb overeating.

Green Leafy Vegetables Leafy greens like spinach, fenugreek, and amaranth are low in carbs and high in fiber, making them a good addition for managing blood sugar levels. These vegetables are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support overall health. Their low glycemic index (GI) makes them crucial for pre-diabetes management.

Greek Yogurt Greek yogurt is a good source of protein and probiotics, which benefit gut health. The protein content slows carbohydrate digestion, leading to a gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream. Dr. Patil advises choosing unsweetened Greek yogurt and pairing it with nuts or fruits for a blood sugar-friendly snack.

Lean Protein Lean proteins like fish, chicken, eggs, and legumes are vital for blood sugar management. Fish, especially fatty types like salmon, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which improve insulin sensitivity. For vegetarians, paneer and tofu offer similar benefits. Including these proteins in meals can help prevent blood sugar spikes.

Whole Grains Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and barley are high in fiber, which slows sugar absorption. Their lower GI makes them ideal for managing blood sugar. Dr. Patil suggests starting your day with oatmeal or incorporating brown rice into meals for sustained energy and better blood sugar control.

If you’re pre-diabetic and not on medication, Dr. Patil stresses the importance of clean eating habits and incorporating these foods into your daily routine. Staying physically active is equally important. She recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity, five days a week, such as walking, yoga, or moderate exercises, to manage blood sugar and prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes.

By making these dietary changes and staying active, you can take control of your blood sugar levels and maintain overall health. Dr. Patil’s balanced nutrition and sustainable practices offer an effective approach to managing pre-diabetes.

8th International Diabetes Summit 2024 held in Pune

PUNE: Collaboration and shared knowledge are required to progress in the fight against diabetes, opined various experts at the 8th International Diabetes Summit 2024 organized by Chellaram Diabetes Institute in Pune. Prof Sunil Bhagwat (Director IISER, Pune) and Dr Narendra Kotwal (Commandant AFMC, Pune) graced the inaugural function as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. Dr Gururaj Mutalik (Professor Emeritus, B. J. Medical College & Sassoon Hospital, Pune) was conferred the Lifetime Achievement award. Mr Lal L. Chellaram, the Patron of the 8th International Diabetes Summit 2024, Dr. Unnikrishnan AG, C.E.O. Chellaram Diabetes Institute, Dr (Brig.) Anil P Pandit, C.M.D. Chellaram Diabetes Institute, Mr.Prakash Bhoopatkar, Vice Chairman Chellaram Group, Mrs.Shobhana Chellaram, and other dignitaries were present.

The three-day summit covered talks on managing diabetes complications, cost-effective diabetes care, new advances, and the role of technology in diabetes management. The focus this year was on obesity which is one of the important risk factors of diabetes.

Dr. Narendra Kotwal Commandant AFMC, Pune said that the increasing number of diabetics presents a significant challenge for our healthcare system and an opportunity for innovations and collaboration. Diabetes is not just a medical condition, it is a formidable challenge that impacts individuals, Families, and communities. Its prevalence is rising at an alarming rate and it is in fact that we come together to address this global health crisis.

Prof Sunil Bhagwat Director of IISER, Pune said that there are so many parameters that contribute to the conditions like that of diabetes. Each person’s condition may not be answerable with the same medication which means a detailed study of individuals and parameters is required. So data science, machine learning, artificial neural networks, and similar tools are bound to be very helpful and it is here that an institution like IISER where biologists work hand in hand with data scientists and chemists will be able to help the society at large.

Dr Gururaj Mutalik Professor Emeritus, B. J. Medical College & Sassoon Hospital, Pune said that despite many breakthrough discoveries there is no respite for diabetes, Diabetes is not only a disease of sugar and metabolism alone but much deeper than that. It affects the entire genome and the system is broken. Referring to the emerging science of genomic and epigenomic studies, he said it has thrown light on why it is so difficult to conquer diabetes. And now there is hope as scientists at the laboratory level are speaking of non-coding RNAs and epigenetic mechanisms. Medical genetics has taken wings. In the last 15 years, 20 Nobel prizes have gone to this subject for genomic and epigenomic advances whether it is diabetes, cancer, chronic diseases, heart diseases, and thrombosis. When we grow old chromosomes break down (chromosomal aberration) immune systems break down and metabolic systems one by one begin to go astray. For example, in diabetes, not only carbohydrate metabolism but fat metabolism and protein metabolism are deeply disturbed. We need mighty resources to fight diabetes. There is a need for collaboration between organizations and different centers that can bring private resources to fight diabetes. We need a world-class laboratory in India in the area of determination of non-coding RNAs which is going to provide a breakthrough, such laboratories are currently only in Western countries.

Dr. Unnikrishnan AG, C.E.O. Chellaram Diabetes Institute said that Chellaram Diabetes Institute is one of the pillars of the Chellaram Foundation whose work extends well beyond medicine to other areas of health and wellness. The conference is a platform for looking at science in a new way and going back and treating patients better.

Lal L. Chellaram, the Patron of the 8th International Diabetes Summit 2024 gave a brief about the history of Chellaram Diabetes Institute and it’s achievements. He said that the Institute was started to make a serious impact through patient care, education, and research. Chellaram Diabetes Institute is an institution that aims to improve the overall well-being and vitality of people with diabetes and related disorders.

Type-2 diabetes is becoming a significant health concern in India due to factors such as genetic predisposition, changes in diet, and rapid lifestyle shifts. A study, published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal suggests, that by 2030 around 98 million people in India could have type-2 diabetes. With the abundance of information about food and nutrition, it’s crucial to understand how each recommendation applies to you and which ones are truly advantageous. Here are three foods that can help improve diabetes management.

Almonds

Consuming a handful of almonds may benefit both short-term and long-term blood sugar control for individuals with uncomplicated type-2 diabetes. Including almonds in a meal can help prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar levels by slowing down the release of glucose into the bloodstream, thanks to their monounsaturated fatty acids content.

Almonds can also aid in boosting metabolism in individuals managing type-2 diabetes, consequently facilitating faster calorie burning. This metabolic boost is attributed to almonds’ nutritional profile, which includes fiber, essential vitamins like folate and vitamin E, phytochemicals such as phytosterols and flavonoids, minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, as well as unsaturated fatty acids.

Additionally, people with type-2 diabetes face an increased risk of developing heart disease. Almonds contain vitamin E and healthy fats that play a crucial role in averting heart complications. Research conducted by Harvard University suggests that incorporating almonds into the diet can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease among adults with type-2 diabetes.

Green leafy vegetables

While many of us recognize the importance of incorporating greens into our diets, research indicates that consuming green leafy vegetables can significantly decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Examples of green leafy vegetables that can be regularly included in one’s diet include spinach, cabbage, drumstick leaves, mint leaves, amaranth leaves, fenugreek leaves, and radish tops, among others. These vegetables are abundant in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and some also contain omega-3 fatty acids in the alpha-linolenic form.

There are various ways to incorporate these green leafy vegetables into your diet, such as adding them to soups, and salads, or even consuming them as a green juice. If you choose to cook them as a curry, it’s advisable to avoid adding excess oil to maintain their nutritional benefits.

Yogurt

Homemade yogurt, known as “dahi,” has been a staple in the Indian diet for centuries. In recent years, yogurt has gained popularity for its numerous health benefits. According to a Yogurt and Diabetes study, consuming yogurt may decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes, especially in healthy and older adults with a high cardiovascular risk. The study found that there was a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes among those who consumed 80–125 grams of yogurt per day compared to those who consumed no yogurt at all.

Yogurt can be particularly beneficial for managing diabetes because it is low in carbohydrates, high in protein, and supportive of gut health. When purchasing yogurt, it’s advisable to opt for the plain variant rather than flavored options. Plain yogurt allows for better control over added sugars. For added nutrients and flavor, consider topping your yogurt with healthy options such as sliced almonds or strawberries.

PUNE: The book ‘Dr. Dixit Lifestyle: Master Key for Diabetes Remission’ based on the success stories of the ‘Dixit Lifestyle’ followers was released in a special program held at Dr. K. H. Sancheti Auditorium, IMA House, Tilak Road recently. It was organized by the Association for Diabetes and Obesity REversal (ADORE) and the Infosys Foundation Diabetes Care Program.

Dignitaries like Dr Suresh Shinde; Senior Physician, Dr Jayant Navarange; Senior Pediatrician, Dr Jagannath Dixit; Chairman of ADORE Trust, and Pravin Kulkarni; Vice President of Infosys, Pune were present on the occasion. Members and trustees of the ADORE Trust were also present.

Many people across India, including the members of the Diabetes Reversal Counselling Centre, Pune who have successfully moved towards diabetes remission were felicitated with a memento, while some of them also narrated their success stories. The achievers among others included a gynecologist Dr Suhas Deshpande from Karad, a pediatrician Dr Suhas Choudhary from Kalyan, and a retired military officer Vitthal Thorat.

“The people whose success stories we hear today are role models for everybody around them. All the people who have seen success to date have strictly followed the diet and have made lifestyle changes. Even today, so many people are unaware that they have been diagnosed with diabetes. Therefore, this campaign of ‘World Free of Diabetes and Obesity’ is for every Indian, and as a responsible citizen of this country, I believe that we all should at least try this lifestyle for good and if it shows expected results, make it a habit and promote to others,” said Dr. Jagannath Dixit. He also urged people to take advantage of this free campaign by visiting the Diabetes Reversal Counseling Centre at the Jangli Maharaj Road, Pune.

Dr Suresh Shinde highlighted how obesity and diabetes have constantly been affecting our society. “We eat more than required and multiple times in a day. If we have control over this, only then there’ll be a way out to prevent such diseases. As a society it is our responsibility to take forward this campaign of ‘World Free of Diabetes and Obesity’ started by Dr Dixit and spread it as much as possible,” he added.

Pravin Kulkarni said, “Reports show that 11-12 crore of Indians are diabetic, while 16 crore of them are pre-diabetic, and every 4 out of 10 people have some of the other problems related to obesity, blood pressure, etc. These days, even teenagers and school-going students are falling prey to being pre-diabetic or diabetic. That’s why I believe that immediate steps should be taken to curb such a big challenge ahead of us.” Infosys Foundation believes that lifestyle diseases should have lifestyle solutions. As prevention is better than cure, they’ve hence been supporting ADORE trust.

Dr Jayant Navarange emphasized following simple rules put forth by Dr. Dixit for a better lifestyle. He also highlighted his participation in the ‘90-Day Weight Loss Challenge’ organized by Dr Dixit, and at the same time urged everyone to actively join it too.

Ar. Shatakshi Dasture has written the book in English, while Dr. Ratnakar Gore and Dr Suhasini Bhalerao have contributed to the Marathi version of it. The book has 91 exemplary success stories. During this program, the initiative of healthful Dr Dixit Thali was also launched.

Sanjay More played the anchor for the event and Vishwas Joshi presented the Vote of Thanks.
