PUNE: Vaidehi Dattaji Gaikwad Training Institute for Autism launched by Small Steps Morris Child Development  Centre, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in collaboration with  Sundarji’s Global Academia on Sunday conducted its second convocation ceremony for 80 trainers completing the Autism Management course. The one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Autism Management and seven months certified foundation course in Autism started in 2023 is accredited by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

The convocation ceremony was held at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on Sunday in the presence of Chief Guest Aarti Deo, Director of Learning and Development Academy at Mumbai, Guest of Honour Ajinkya Deo, the renowned actor along with Abhay Kudale, HoD Department of Health Sciences at Savitribai Phule Pune University, real estate developer Dattaji Gaikwad,  Course Directors Dr. Suneel Godbole and Masrat Tawawala,  Dr. Rajan Joshi, HoD Paediatrics Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre and Vaidehi Gaikwad.

Narrating his own experience, Actor Ajinkya Deo said that parents of autistic children should not lose hope. Although the situation is challenging, we can find a way out.

Aarti Deo, Director of the Learning and Development Academy at Mumbai, said that the first and most important step is to accept and give him or her unconditional love and respect. The challenge is to connect with the child, especially since our approach is to prevent the child from doing different things. We need to reconnect with the autistic child through words pictures or other means. The child is intelligent but the intelligence is locked. Give the child a little space. Create the right environment for it to perceive choices, and motivate and the child will come along, even if the path is not easy.

Stressing that parents should not be apologetic about their child, nor be guilty, they need to create an ecosystem around where children can also be looked at and cared for by others. We need to trust them. While taking care of the child, mothers should not neglect their own mental and physical health, she said.

Abhay Kudale, HoD Department of Health Sciences at Savitribai Phule Pune University said that the course is now reaching beyond Pune to the rural parts of Maharashtra. Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre should apply for a university-affiliated PhD research centre which will pave the way for more research and training programs.

Dr. Rajan Joshi, HoD Paediatrics, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre said that at a time when the number of children with autism is growing, there is a need for training centers and this is what our center has been pursuing.

Consultant Paediatrician and course director Dr. Suneel Godbole said that Autism is a growing problem amongst children worldwide. This neurological disorder affects the behavior of an individual and the ability to communicate or interact socially. While there is no cure for this there are medicines and therapies to reduce the severity. We need trained manpower to understand and handle children with autism. The role of parents is also crucial. Recognizing the growing number and need for trained manpower we started these courses in 2023. Any graduate, parent, educator, or caregiver can apply for this course. The course includes 30 expert faculties and hands-on training and on completion of this course, the certified professionals can work as resource room custodians in inclusive schools, shadow teachers for autistic children, or early interventionists.

The trained professionals not only help manage autistic children with a positive attitude but also can help spread awareness about Autism, said Dr Godbole.

PUNE: Many times during the process of conservation the condition of the object taken for conservation deteriorates. We must focus on minimizing the same. Because it is not merely the conservation of that object but the conservation of knowledge associated with it. So, we should not treat it as material conservation but as knowledge conservation. Preserving heritage is important, opined Prof Pratapanand Jha, Dean of Academics, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. He was talking at the commencement function of the Post Graduate Diploma in Preventive Conservation at the city-based Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI). Dr.Achal Pandya, HoD, Conservation, IGNCA, Sudhir Vaishampayan, Secretary and Dr Pradeep Apte, Vice President Regulatory Council of BORI were present on the occasion.

“After successful implementation at IGNCA, New Delhi this program was launched at Baroda last year, this year it was launched at BORI Pune and next year we will start this program at Gujarat Vidyapith.“, Jha added.

“We are happy to start this postgraduate diploma which will provide a comprehensive overview of heritage conservation, its philosophies ,and history. It will touch upon aspects of traditional and scientific conservation methods, restoration and preservation of our tangible heritage (material culture) ,and the resources of the Indian Knowledge System. About 16 students are admitted to the first batch of this postgraduatee diploma in preventive conservation being held at BORI Campus with help from IGNCA“, said Sudhir Vaishampayan.

Achal Pandya said, “The preventive conservation science is not very old; it started as late as 1952 in Belgium. The approach used in imparting conservation techniques is more towards teaching the don’ts. So, when we use chemicals in preventive conservation the focus is more on what should not be done and on the damage control. Good job opportunities are available in the area of conservation for skilled personnel.”

“IGNCA started the heritage conservation courses in 2017 and so far 5 batches have come out. The same course would be implemented at BORI. Infact the students at BORI will benefit more due to the legacy of BORI in heritage conservation“, Pandya added.

“Technology helped spread the knowledge acquired by BORI through many years of research. It was the situation of the pandemic that prompted the use of technology, especially the digital platforms created on the internet that helped in creating interest about these subjects from the Indian Knowledge System among the people at large. BORI would like to be a part of ever evolving conservation relevant to its work“, said Pradeep Apte.

PUNE: In a significant initiative for skill development in Indian hospitality undertaken by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), an 18-month Vocational Education and Training (VET) Professional Diploma program offered in collaboration with EHL Hospitality Business School of Switzerland and delivered at AISSMS, Pune. The program has now been running very successfully for the last two years with over 100 students on the verge of graduating and joining the industry.

This year, we plan to induct 100 students at our VET by EHL AISSMS Pune Centre and over 400+ students including our Chandigarh and Bangalore Centre. The duration of the program is 18 months out of which they are given a sound grounding of theory and practical in their area of specialization. The training at AISSMS is followed by an Advanced Certificate program and on-the-job training for 12 months at Select IHCL hotels.

Praveen Roy, Advisor, Confederation of Indian Industry said: “The industry is poised for a 15-20% growth in hiring within the tourism and hospitality sector in India. CII, with its strategic tie-up with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) and Academic partnership with EHL Hospitality Business School, trains a large number of students with the help of EHL-certified trainers who are also department managers.
