PUNE: Ruby Hall Clinic announced a landmark advancement in regional oncology with the launch of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. This cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer will be housed at the newly inaugurated Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune.

The facility was inaugurated by the leadership of Ruby Hall Clinic, including Dr. P.K. Grant, Dr. Simon Grant, and Dr. Himesh Gandhi, alongside the Kalyani family, represented by Dr. Baba Kalyani, Mrs. Sunita Kalyani, and Mr. Amit Kalyani of Bharat Forge. They were joined by international experts from Focal One, including Prof. Pascal (University of Toulouse), Dr. Damian, Vice President and CEO, and Mr. Ryan. The initiative has been made possible by the support of the Kalyani family, who have contributed to establishing the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic, to improve access to advanced cancer care in India.

With over 40,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed annually in India, many men traditionally delay treatment due to the risks associated with invasive surgery or radiation – specifically concerns regarding recovery time and long-term functional health.
Robotic HIFU addresses these fears by offering:
• Targeted Precision: Destroys cancerous tissue while sparing surrounding healthy structures.
• Non-Invasive Nature: A completely incision-free and radiation-free procedure.
• Rapid Recovery: Typically performed as a day-case, allowing patients to return to their lives almost immediately.
• Preserved Quality of Life: Significantly reduces the risk of urinary and sexual dysfunction compared to traditional methods.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. P.K. Grant, Chairman and Managing Trustee of Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “The introduction of the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy at Ruby Hall Clinic marks an important milestone for cancer care in our region. Our commitment has always been to bring advanced and meaningful medical technology to patients in India rather than wait for it to reach us years later. Establishing this programme reflects that philosophy and ensures that our patients have access to treatment options that prioritise both outcomes and quality of life.”

Dr Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director Bharat Forge, whose family’s philanthropic support made the institute possible, emphasised the importance of local access: “I have always believed that advances in technology should be used for the good of society. This programme is a clear example of how digital and AI-enabled innovation can make a real difference to patients by offering precise, minimally invasive treatment. Under the leadership of Dr Himesh Gandhi, the Robotic HIFU system has already begun delivering encouraging results for patients. I would like to congratulate Dr Purvez Grant and his team for making it possible for us to bring this technology to society.”

Dr Simon Grant, Physician and Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic, noted, “FOCAL ONE offers a level of precision that allows us to treat only the areas affected by cancer with the intention of maintaining functional outcomes. We assess that cancer control can be achieved while preserving day-to-day quality of life for patients.”

Ms. Natalie Grant Nanda Ruby Hall Clinic, SPL, “Bringing the Indian subcontinent’s first Robotic HIFU therapy to Pune continues that legacy while setting the foundation for the next generation of cancer care. We are honoured to have the support of the Kalyani family in making this possible.”

From a clinical perspective Dr Himesh Gandhi, Consultant Uro-oncologist and Director of Robotic Surgery at Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “For many men, the fear of the treatment is as great as the fear of the cancer itself. Robotic HIFU removes that barrier, offering a non-invasive pathway that prioritises the patient’s functional independence and quick return to daily life.”

With the establishment of the Kalyani Institute of Robotic HIFU Therapy, Ruby Hall Clinic strengthens its position as a leader in advanced oncological care with an emphasis on accessibility, clinical excellence, and improved patient experience.

BENGALURU: Dr. Ganesh Shenoy, Director of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery at Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, Bengaluru, has set a world record of completing the most number of robotic hernia surgeries-13, by a single surgeon using a single da Vinci surgical system in a single day. This achievement showcases Dr. Shenoy’s extraordinary surgical skill, consistency, and mastery of the advanced robotic technology.

“This achievement is not just about numbers”, , but about demonstrating what is possible when technology and skill converge. Each one of the 13 patients received individualized attention with a commitment to safety, and all procedures were completed with zero errors or complications. The use of robotic-assisted surgery was pivotal. It allowed for exceptional precision and greatly reduced surgeon fatigue, which would have been difficult, if not impossible, had these cases been performed laparoscopically. My priority in every case is patient safety and optimal outcomes,” said Dr. Shenoy, Director of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery-Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City, Bengaluru

The remarkable surgical marathon was witnessed firsthand by Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Former President of the Hernia Society of India, who was visiting the hospital. His presence lends authoritative credibility to this milestone, confirming the safe, precise, and efficient execution of these complex procedures.

“Dr. Ganesh Shenoy’s accomplishment is a testament to his dedication and technical excellence,” said Dr. Bhandarkar. “Performing robotic hernia repairs at this scale in a day, with full focus on patient safety and surgical precision, is truly outstanding and inspiring for the surgical community. The robotic system’s ability to reduce surgeon fatigue significantly enhances the precision and safety achievable during such a marathon, which would otherwise be unthinkable laparoscopically.” Says Dr. Deepraj Bhandarkar, Former President of the Hernia Society of India.

The record has also been recognized by Intuitive, the makers of the da Vinci surgical robot, who played a key supporting role by providing robotic instrumentation, workflow planning, and rapid system turnaround, enabling seamless transitions between cases. Rohit Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, Intuitive India, said, “This achievement highlights the impact created when highly organized surgical teams adopt best-in-class surgical technologies like the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery platform to maximize throughput and reduce variability in patient outcomes.
Arcus Hospital, Pune celebrates 800 mako robotic surgeries with a special program.

PUNE: Arcus Hospital based in Wanowrie today organized a special program to mark the milestone of 800 mako robotic surgeries for partial and total knee replacements and total hip replacements. Dr. Rohit Luthra, Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Surgeon at Arcus Hospital, Dr. Juhi Luthra, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Dr. Rohit Luthra said that advancing robotic technologies is a boon to patients with partial and total knee and total hip replacements. Robotic systems are being used for greater precision in preparing bone for implant and accurately placing the replacement joint.

Dr.Luthra added that lesser blood loss, no muscle cuts, and more accuracy have resulted in reducing the hospital stay by about half.

A 3D scan helps develop a 3D model of the patient’s anatomy and is used by the surgeon to plan the surgery. The surgeon guides the robotic arm which aligns the implant to perfection and cuts only the portion that is needed and spares the bone tissues and surrounding muscles. The robot performs the procedure, with the surgeon maintaining overall control of programming and robotics.

The Mako Surgical Robotic System is considered the most accurate and advanced robotic surgical system in the world for hip and knee replacements, including partial knee replacements which can be complex surgeries.

Damage from arthritis is the most common reason for needing a hip replacement. Left unchecked, inflammation can lead to significant damage, causing a loss of function and disability. Arthritis can impact almost any part of the body, but most often affects the hip, knee, spine, or other weight-bearing joints.

Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) brings much relief to the patients

Arcus Hospital was one of the first in India to do the robotic bilateral hip replacement surgery with the anterior approach in October 2023. Since then more than 650 surgeries have been done with anterior approach with or without robotic system.

Dr. Rohit Luthara added that the Anterior approach or the ‘Front’ approach as it is called is a minimally invasive and muscle-sparing procedure. In this procedure, the incision is made from the front instead of the back or side. The damaged bones or cartilage are removed without detaching muscles or tendons and are just pushed aside instead of cut to allow the implant to be placed. This results in minimal damage to the muscles and since the muscles are not cut, the patient can sooner bear his or her weight and start walking. The robotic system adds pinpoint accuracy to the procedure including placing the implant into the right position. It helps us get the exact offsets as per the patient’s native anatomy of the hip and there is minimal chance of implant malposition and the risk of dislocation is nearly zero.

One of the most crucial parts of robotic procedures is planning which ensures accuracy and safety for patients. The sizing of the implant is done with a CT scan before the operation. So we do a CT scan, we get a 3D virtual model of the hip and then we see what implant will best fit the patient and according to the anatomy the surgery is planned for the Robotic system to execute it to perfection. Also, one very big advantage is that the limb length can be checked easily with this approach because the patient is lying supine ( flat on the back with face up) and not lying on the side.

This approach is proving to be a game changer, he said.

Patients Embrace Flexibility with 37% of Online Doctor Consultations now happening even After 6 PM, highlighting a growing demand for high-quality healthcare 24×7

INDIA: MediBuddy, India’s largest digital healthcare platform, marked a transformative year in 2024 by touching the lives of over 1.27 crore Indians, demonstrating the country’s rapid shift towards digital healthcare solutions. MediBuddy’s compelling insights uncover fascinating patterns of how Indians approach healthcare and paint a powerful picture of how healthcare evolves in India.

The data reveals a striking portrait of family health dynamics in Indian households. Of all healthcare bookings, 40% were made for family and friends, showcasing how digital platforms empower users to prioritize the well-being of their loved ones. Within this segment, 44% of bookings were for parents, reflecting the younger generation’s active role in their care. Spousal health accounted for 33%, highlighting strong partner support, while children’s health services comprised 11% of these bookings.

One of the most prominent insights from 2024 is the significant shift in when people seek healthcare. 37% of online consultations in 2024 occurred after 6 PM, highlighting a growing demand for high-quality healthcare 24×7. This shift highlights the need for flexible, accessible care that aligns with modern, busy lifestyles, moving beyond traditional office hours.

Gastroenterology, pediatrics, and dermatology were the most frequently accessed specialties on the platform. With digestive health also a growing concern, many turned to gastroenterologists for support, highlighting the rising awareness of gut health’s importance. Paediatrics was a focal point for many families, with parents increasingly relying on pediatricians to help them navigate their children’s growth and health. Meanwhile, dermatology emerged as a top specialty, with a significant increase in consultations for skin-related issues such as acne and overall skin care.

MediBuddy also looked at how its users contribute to a more sustainable future. By switching to digital reports, we were able to save enough paper to preserve the equivalent of 1,195 trees, which can absorb approximately 30,000 kg of CO2 annually. The choice to move consultations online had an even greater environmental impact, preventing 2.75 million kg of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere from fuel burning. This shift not only highlights how digital healthcare is reshaping the patient experience but also how collective action can contribute to a healthier planet.

In 2024, MediBuddy’s phlebotomists traveled a staggering 80 lakh kilometers to deliver sample collection services at home. To put this in perspective, that’s the distance it would take to travel from Kashmir to Kanyakumari 2,192 times. Of particular note is that 25% of the phlebotomists making these tireless journeys were women, exemplifying the empowerment of women and the dedication with expertise that drives MediBuddy’s commitment to accessible care.

The insights gathered show that healthcare is becoming increasingly personal, accessible, and environmentally conscious. As people seek care that fits into their lives, whether through after-hours consultations or digital solutions, MediBuddy continues to adapt, ensuring that high-quality healthcare is always within reach. The year’s data also highlights how individual choices can have a collective, positive impact—on both personal health and the planet.

KOLKATA: Manipal Hospitals, Broadway successfully handled a rare instance of bilateral Herpes Zoster in Nanda Ghosh, a 74-year-old woman. This is only the fourth documented case of bilateral Herpes Zoster in the country involving a patient who is not immunocompromised. She was brought to the hospital with complaints like fever, high-grade headache, nasal discharge, congestion, and coughing, Upon examination, vesiculopapular rashes (small bumps or fluid-filled blisters) among other symptoms suggested a severe and rare presentation of the Herpes virus.

Imagine suffering from days of fever, unceasing headache, and pain so inexplicable it just won’t subside. Despite a growing sense that something is seriously wrong, the underlying cause remains unknown. Such was the condition of this elderly patient till her son brought her to Manipal Hospital, Broadway where finally her condition found a diagnosis and treatment.

Herpes Zoster, commonly known as shingles can cause painful rashes and typically forms along a single nerve root (dermatome) on one side of the body, often affecting areas like the chest, abdomen, or face. However, in this case, it manifested bilaterally, which is extremely rare. The lesions formed on both sides of the face, including around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes, which is highly unusual in someone in relatively healthy condition.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, confirmed the diagnosis through an extensive investigation. The patient was treated with antiviral medication (Zovirax) to target the Herpes virus and antibiotics (Meropenem) to manage secondary bacterial infections. Dermatologists and ophthalmologists were consulted to ensure comprehensive care.

Dr. Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, explained, “This case was a medical rarity, especially in a healthy elderly individual without immunosuppression. Such cases challenge conventional medical understanding and require advanced diagnostic expertise. If left untreated, Herpes Zoster can lead to severe complications such as blindness, hearing loss, and nerve damage. Getting the shingles vaccine can prevent herpes outbreaks. The shingles vaccine is administered in a 2-dose series, with the second dose given 2 to 6 months after the first for optimal effectiveness. Timely diagnosis and treatment are essential in managing the condition and preventing complications. While this vaccine is recommended for all ages, this is particularly beneficial for the elderly or those at higher risk.”

Nanda Devi’s son shared his emotional journey, stating, “Watching my mother suffer without knowing what was wrong was heart-wrenching. This is the fourth time we have relied on Manipal Hospitals, Broadway, and every time, they have exceeded our expectations. My mother’s condition was critical and very unusual, but the doctors here handled it with extraordinary care and expertise. Thanks to their efforts, my mother is now back home with her family. We are deeply thankful.”

In a week, the patient showed great improvement under the devoted care of the specialists at Manipal Hospital, Broadway. Her fever abated, and rashes resolved without secondary infection; her general condition stabilized. The patient was discharged in ten days with overall good health and immense gratitude regarding the compassionate and highly professional treatment.

Groundbreaking Procedure Offers Unmatched Precision and Improved Patient Outcomes

PUNE: Sahyadri Hospitals proudly announces a groundbreaking achievement in orthopedic surgery with the successful completion of Pune’s first robotic-assisted hip replacement using the direct anterior approach. The procedure was performed on Mr. Dnyaneshrao Pradhan (name changed), a 65-year-old retired resident of Satara, diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip, a condition where bone tissue in the hip deteriorates due to a lack of blood supply.

Under the expert care of Dr. Abhijit Agashe, Consultant Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Sahyadri Hospitals, the surgery was conducted on November 27, 2024, and Mr. Pradhan was discharged on December 2, 2024, reporting excellent post-operative progress. The use of the real intelligence robotic system combined with the direct anterior approach has set a new standard in the field, providing unparalleled precision and safety.

Dr. Abhijit Agashe commented on the benefits of this revolutionary technique, stating, “Compared to traditional hip replacement methods, the robotic-assisted direct anterior approach enables a more accurate and less invasive surgery. Patients benefit from reduced pain, quicker recovery times, and more natural movement post-surgery. This technology enables patients to sit cross-legged after surgery, a position essential for cultural practices and daily activities, making it particularly beneficial for those suffering from hip problems. This method has not only enhanced functional outcomes but has also allowed immediate postoperative mobility, significantly improving the quality of life for patients with AVN Hip.”

Dr. Agashe further highlighted, “The combination of the robotic system and the direct anterior approach represents a significant advancement in joint replacement surgery. The ability to feed preoperative data into the robotic system ensures each patient receives a customized surgery plan tailored to their specific anatomy, achieving perfect alignment and leg length with millimeter precision.”

Sahyadri Hospitals remains committed to adopting innovative technologies and methods to enhance healthcare outcomes. This successful procedure marks a promising step towards making robotic-assisted surgeries the new standard in hip replacements.

PUNE: Doctors at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune successfully treated a 65-year-old patient suffering from a complex and large midline hernia through robotic-assisted surgery. The elderly patient presented with extreme pain and discomfort due to the enlarged hernia bulges and also had multiple co-morbidities, including asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.

Given the patient’s age, multiple co-morbidities, high BMI, and a history of three vertical C-sections, the complexity of the surgery was significantly high. To ensure the best possible outcome, the patient underwent robotic-assisted surgery, using the da Vinci system which offered a more precise, minimally invasive approach to manage the challenges of the surgery.

Dr. Suprashant Kulkarni, Sr. Consultant, General and Robotic Surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic who led the surgery emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to improve surgical outcomes. “Our primary goal was to optimize the patient’s overall health before the surgery. As the patient was diabetic, we made sure that her blood sugar levels were under control before the surgery to avoid any risk of infections. With the help of a pulmonologist, we were able to optimize her respiratory issues, effectively improving her condition for two months. As urinary and constipation issues are a common concern in elderly patients, addressing and managing these issues was necessary to ensure that the patient was in good condition for the procedure, thereby reducing the risk of complications,” he said.

The patient was advised to High protein, fiber-rich diet preoperatively, in addition to exercises like walking daily for 30-60 min, and to use inspiratory spirometry to optimize her lung and heart status.

Highlighting the significance of optimizing the patient’s health before surgery, thereby improving the outcomes, Dr. Suprashant Kulkarni, further said, “Umbilical hernias, which affect both men and women, are more common in women due to the weakening of navel scar or weakening of vertical midline incisions (of Caesarean section) and surrounding abdominal muscles during pregnancy. In this patient’s case, a history of three vertical C-sections contributed to weakened abdominal muscles causing a large abdominal bulge (Diastasis recti) in addition to multiple incisional hernias (Called the Swiss cheese defects due to the typical shape caused by the defects).

To prevent hernias in women, women need to focus on strengthening their abdominal & other core muscles in not only in their growing age but also during antenatal and postnatal periods (as per recommendations from their Drs)”.

A robotic platform ensures precise and accurate surgery and the least trauma to the patient’s physiology. The patient was walking on her own in the wards just 5.5 hours post-surgery, despite the long time required for the surgery, and was discharged within 48 hours post-surgery with minimal pain, tolerating a full oral diet

Expressing her gratitude, the 65-year-old patient said, “I’m extremely grateful to Dr. Suprashant Kulkarni and his team for helping me recover this soon. They helped me understand the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery and explained how it can significantly reduce the chances of recurrence in the future.”

“Robotic technology, with its minimally invasive approach, is the best surgical treatment for addressing hernias. The three-dimensional vision, precision, and exceptional reach of instruments, offered by the da Vinci robotic system, enabled the correction of a large hernia through very small incisions. Any other surgical method would have required larger incisions, increasing the risk of infection, recurrence, and delayed wound healing,” Dr. Kulkarni added.

Young Child Miraculously Defeats Life-Threatening Brain Infection and Organ Failure

PUNE: A five-year-old boy who suffered severe complications from a chikungunya infection, including brain encephalitis and multi-organ failure, was discharged from Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory this week, marking a significant triumph in pediatric medical care.

The child was initially seen by Dr Vinod Shelar, a Pediatrician at Chandan Nagar on August 18, due to a high fever but he started getting fits hence was urgently transferred to Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory Nagar Road – PICU, for specialized care.

“On arrival at MomStory, he had persistent convulsions and signs of severe brain infection including unequal pupils indicative of increased intracranial pressure. We noted the child’s condition required immediate intervention with ventilator support due to his unstable breathing and ongoing seizures, Continuous EEG monitoring also showed ongoing continuous convulsions that needed aggressive management to control it. This entity is called Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus where convulsions are not seen but in the brain, there are ongoing convulsions. Hence he was started on continuous infusion of medicine to control ongoing seizures and raised brain pressure. Slowly EEG started to normalize. This if not treated urgently can cause severe brain dysfunction,” said Dr. Sagar Lad, Senior Pediatric Intensivist at Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory.

“The initial outlook was concerning as further tests showed acute liver failure which is seen in less than 3% of patients with chikungunya infection and needs urgent medication for liver regeneration and very low platelet and white blood cell counts, making treatment more complex. He received blood and platelet transfusions. He also had low blood pressure and refractory shock required medicines to normalize Blood pressure. A real-time PCR test soon confirmed a severe chikungunya infection. The situation worsened when he developed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare and dangerous condition where the body’s immune system starts to damage its organs. These complications require strong treatment plans, including Intravenous Immunoglobulin and steroids, to effectively control the immune system’s excessive response,” explained Dr. Sagar Lad.

Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Director of Neonatology & Paediatrics at Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory, stated, “During his stay, the child underwent continuous monitoring and multiple treatment adjustments to address the complex interplay of the infection and its broad impacts on his brain and other organs. The brain scans revealed widespread signs of encephalitis, a severe and uncommon condition in chikungunya cases.”

“After a tough but successful 14-day stay in the hospital with 2 weeks of ventilation the child made incredible progress and no longer needed the ventilator. His thinking and movement skills are almost back to normal, despite the severity of his case. He is now interacting well with the world around him,” said Dr. Suryawanshi.

On September 1, the child was discharged from the hospital. His condition had stabilized significantly, and he was able to return home with no ongoing neurological deficits.

“The family thanked the doctors and hospital staff deeply for their dedication and care, which transformed a critical situation into a story of survival and hope,” said Dr Prateek Kataria, senior consultant at the hospital.

The concerted efforts of a multidisciplinary team include Dr. Prateek Kataria, Dr. Preeti Lad, Dr. Sushmita Nimagadda, Dr Nikita Mankar, Dr Aaishwarya Dalal, Dr. Pranjali Fulari, Dr. Neha Kunturkar, and Dr. Dinesh Thakre, with critical support from pediatric liver specialist Dr. Snehvardhan Pandey and pediatric hematologist Dr. Kannan.

“Chikungunya is considered to be not a very serious infection in children but in this current situation in Pune, we are seeing very complicated chikungunya infection, especially in children affecting the brain causing convulsion, decreasing level of consciousness, and even coma. If not detected early can be life-threatening. Probably this is due to a change in the Virulence factor of the virus,” said Dr Sagar Lad.

She presented with a range of critical symptoms, including seizures, drowsiness, and unequal pupils, which indicated a potentially life-threatening brain injury. Suspecting a brain herniation and internal bleeding, the team of doctors led by Dr. Parth Dalal, consultant Pediatric Intensivist, started emergency protocols right away to lower the intracranial pressure (ICP) in her skull and stabilize her condition. A quick CT scan was performed, which confirmed the presence of a left-sided subdural hemorrhage (SDH) and signs of brain herniation.

After diagnosing her condition, doctors performed a craniectomy (brain surgery) to relieve pressure and prevent future brain injury. During the procedure, a large blood clot was removed, and a section of the skull was temporarily removed to allow the brain to enlarge safely without increasing intracranial pressure. After ensuring stability in her intracranial pressure, she underwent orthopedic surgery for a femur fracture, a flexible rod was placed for fracture stabilization, which will be removed in the follow-up procedure.

Anushree was taken to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), where she continued to receive intensive care, including physiotherapy and feeding. She began showing signs of neurological improvement, including recovering consciousness, following orders, and improving motor function. She could open her eyes, recognize her parents, and respond appropriately.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Parth Dalal, consultant Pediatric Intensivist, at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, said, “The forced hit on the ground caused brain herniation and subdural hemorrhage on the left side of the brain. In such cases, there’s a pressure created from within the skull that pushes against the brain’s tissues and can lead to paralysis, decreased breathing, and even death. While performing the craniectomy, we removed a large blood clot to release the intracranial pressure. Despite her frequent seizures and hemodynamic instability, with constant observation in the ICU, medication, and therapy, her condition eventually stabilized, including electrolyte control and breathing support. She was discharged after 9 days of hospital stay. While her condition improves, we observe her closely to ensure her steady recovery.”

A multidisciplinary team of pediatric intensivists, neurosurgeons, orthopedicians, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, and physiotherapists responded quickly, saving Anushree’s life and facilitating her miraculous recovery.
