PUNE: In a heartwarming display of community spirit and commitment to education, Lexicon Kids Viman Nagar, in collaboration with the Viman Nagar Resident Association, concluded a successful Book Donation Drive aimed at making the joy of reading accessible to underprivileged children. The drive, held on August 10th, 12th, and 13th, collected a vast array of storybooks and novels in Hindi, Marathi, and English, suitable for students from Nursery to Class 10th. These books will be donated to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) schools and orphanages in the surrounding areas.

The initiative received an overwhelming response, with parents, students, and residents coming together to contribute books in large numbers. The diverse collection of books, ranging from classic literature to contemporary stories, reflects the community’s dedication to fostering a love for reading among children who may not have easy access to such resources.

The Book Donation Drive was more than a collection of books; it was a movement to bridge the educational gap for children in need. By providing access to quality reading material, this initiative aims to inspire young minds and open up new avenues for learning and imagination.

Deepti Sharma, Director, of The Lexicon Group, emphasized the significance of the drive, stating, “We believe that education is a fundamental right, and through this initiative, we wanted to ensure that all children have the opportunity to experience the magic of books. This drive is a testament to the power of community when it comes together for a noble cause. We are proud to be a part of this initiative and are confident that the books donated will have a lasting impact on the lives of the children who receive them.”

For the community and Lexicon Kids Viman Nagar, the Book Donation Drive was a valuable learning experience. Through their participation, they learned about the importance of humility, generosity, and the profound impact that even small acts of kindness can have on others. The initiative also highlighted the value of sharing and empathy, core principles that will guide these young students as they grow into responsible and compassionate individuals.

The success of the Book Donation Drive would not have been possible without the collective efforts of the Viman Nagar community. Lexicon Kids Viman Nagar and the Viman Nagar Resident Association extend their deepest gratitude to all the parents, residents, and students who contributed to this noble cause. Your generosity has provided much-needed educational resources to underprivileged children but has also fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility for the betterment of society.

These books will light up the lives of young readers, offering them new perspectives and opportunities that will shape their futures.

A community initiative to make a difference in the lives of mothers and children

PUNE: Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital successfully hosted a breast milk donation awareness drive at their hospital premises in Pune under the theme of “Love in Every Drop Donated, Life in Every Drop Received”. Breast milk is the primary and ultimate source of nutrition for newborns and infants, it supports the healthy growth of babies and protects them against the risks of infections and diseases. In the absence of breast milk, donor milk is the second-best choice for any child, particularly for prematurely born babies or severely ill newborns. This drive was inaugurated by Dr.Manisha Khalane, a lactation consultant who addressed the cohort of donor mothers by emphasizing the significance of breast milk donation and lauding their contributions.

Breast milk contains all the nutrients that an infant needs in the first 6 months of life, including fat, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. However, only 43% of Indian infants are exclusively breastfed for 6 months according to NFHS. Some mothers may not be able to produce milk during pregnancy due to hormonal issues or post-birth infections. Breast milk donation can ensure a continuous supply of nutrition to premature or ill newborns who are unable to breastfeed.

The milk donation awareness drive witnessed the generous participation of 675 eligible donor mothers. SMCH through this drive was able to collect 527 liters 984ml from mothers which will help the hospital feed and nourish 525

The donor mothers also shared their stories, with grace and warmth, exemplifying an unwavering commitment to nurturing life. Minakshi shared – “I am a lactating mother who was already producing more milk than my baby needed. I had an oversupply of milk and decided to donate it to help infants in need. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only did I help nourish and save lives, but I also helped other mothers see their babies grow healthily with the necessary nutrients.”

Commemorating the event, Dr.Amita Kaul expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the donating mothers. In her thank-you note, Dr.Kaul acknowledged the invaluable role these mothers play in the hospital’s mission to provide optimal neonatal care – “Today, I want to thank every donor mother for her generosity and commitment. Your contributions have provided essential nourishment and crucial antibodies to protect the little ones in our NICUs. Breast milk is a vital source of nutrition, The good bacteria and oligosaccharides present in human milk help to strengthen and protect the baby’s digestive tract by promoting healthy digestion. Breast milk is loaded with hormones that help in regulating the baby’s appetite and help them develop a healthy sleep cycle. Every mother who participated in the donation drive today is a savior and has given a profound meaning to today’s theme – Love in Every Drop Donated, Life in Every Drop Received”.

PUNE: The family of 55-year-old Sunil Nigade Ji from Satara, who was declared brain dead at Manipal Hospital, took the brave decision to donate his organs on Friday. The patient suffered a brain aneurysmal bleed at a local hospital in Satara, where he was put on a ventilator to maintain oxygenation. For further treatment was brought to Manipal Hospital, Baner, on January 3rd. Despite the best efforts of doctors, his condition continued to deteriorate, and he was declared brain dead on January 5th, 2024.

The medical team of critical care department & Transplant Coordinator Ms. Reshma Kulawade counselled the family about organ donation. After receiving consent from the family, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) was immediately informed. The officials from NOTTO quickly allotted the organs as per their waiting list. One kidney was allocated to a patient at Manipal Hospital, Baner, and the other was sent to DY Patil Hospital, Pune. The liver was sent to Shayadri Hospital, Hadapsar, and the heart was sent to MGM Hospital, Chennai. A Green corridor was created on January 6th, 2024 with the support of Pune traffic police to transfer the heart.

Dr. Amit Dhakoji, Head of Neurosciences, Manipal Hospital, Baner, said, “We continued the mechanical ventilation and medical management to prevent an increase in brain swelling and seizures. On further evaluation, it was revealed that he was suffering from subarachnoid hemorrhage (Grade 4). Despite intensive treatment under the care of the neurosurgery and critical care teams, he could not recover and was declared brain dead on January 5th, 2024.”

Dr. Bhushan Nagarkar, Consultant and Head of Critical Care, Manipal Hospital, Baner, said, ‘The team worked closely with the patient’s family, providing them with the required information and support so that they could make an informed decision. The family agreed to donate the heart, liver, and kidneys of their patient. The heart, liver, and kidneys were retrieved by the Expert team of doctors and transported for a successful transplantation. The family saved the lives of four patients in critical condition and gave them a new lease of life.”

Dr. Anand Dharaskar, Consultant: Uro-surgeon & Transplant Specialist, and his team performed the kidney transplantation for one at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune. Dr. Tarun Jeloka, Consultant Nephrologist and head of Renal Sciences & team supported the team during the entire procedure.

Dr. Sonal Dixit, Regional Head- Medical Service, Manipal Hospital, Baner, said, “The family’s decision to donate organs made a difference in the lives of others. The legacy of the donor will live on through the lives he has saved. Donating one’s organs is a gift of life; it is an opportunity to give someone else a second chance in life. We strongly encourage everyone to think about organ donation and to register as an organ donor. We can save lives if we work together.”

There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. 1.8 lakh people suffer from renal failure every year; however, only 15,000 renal transplants are done. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India, but only about 2000 are performed. Similarly, of several thousand people who suffer from heart failure, only 200 get a heart transplant.

The noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.

PUNE: With Love Charitable Foundation, a leading non-governmental organization, is dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. They conducted two major projects for Diwali.

The Declutter and Donate Drive initiative encouraged people to declutter their homes and donate items they no longer used, to help those less fortunate. With Love recognizes the importance of reusing and recycling and organizes this drive as a means of redistributing these resources to those who need them most.

Pune residents were encouraged to participate by contributing items such as clothing, toys, books, kitchenware, and other household items that they no longer need.

“We believe in the power of collective generosity,” said Dimple Somji, founder, and trustee of the NGO, “Through the Declutter and Donate Drive, we aim to bridge the gap between those who have more than they need and those who struggle to make ends meet. It’s an opportunity for our community to come together and create a positive change.“

Another key project the NGO undertook was the JoyBag Drive. This heartfelt initiative focused on collecting essential kitchen grains to support underprivileged diabetic kids and their families in need.

Amidst economic challenges, many families struggle to put meals on the table during Diwali. The JoyBag Drive helps to organize essential kitchen grains such as rice, wheat, lentils, and more; for these families so that the festivities are stress-free for them as well.

Neelima Ladkat, another key trustee of the NGO, expressed gratitude, saying, “The overwhelming response from our community demonstrates the incredible compassion and unity of purpose. The JoyBag Drive is about more than just providing food; it’s about creating a stronger, more supportive community.“

These initiatives not only aim to provide essential support but also raise awareness about the challenges faced by underprivileged families struggling to make ends meet. It encourages a spirit of empathy and understanding within the community, fostering a more compassionate and inclusive society.

With Love, the NGO extends its heartfelt appreciation to the community, partners, and supporters for their invaluable contributions. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children and their families, ensuring a brighter future for all.
