As more professionals, runners, and recreational athletes push their bodies harder, timely sports care is becoming essential, not optional.

By Dr. Bhushan Shitole, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Vencer Hospital, Pune

Pune has always had a strong sporting culture, but in recent years, the city’s relationship with physical activity has changed visibly. Sport is no longer limited to trained athletes or structured clubs. It now lives in weekend cricket groups, badminton leagues, football turfs, cycling communities, gym challenges, running events, and fitness-driven social circles. That is a positive shift. But it has also created a medical reality we need to talk about more seriously.

Many people are becoming active faster than they are becoming physically prepared.

This is where sports medicine enters the conversation. Unfortunately, many still think sports medicine is only for elite athletes or people playing at a professional level. That is far from the truth. Today, the need for sports injury management is rising among everyday working adults, students, fitness enthusiasts, and even middle-aged individuals who are trying to become healthier but do not always understand how to condition the body correctly.

In Pune, especially, this becomes even more relevant during the summer months. As temperatures rise, so do the risks linked to dehydration, poor recovery, muscle fatigue, and reduced physical efficiency. People often head out for a run, a cricket match, or a high-intensity workout without respecting the effect heat has on the body. Muscles tire faster, balance changes, and concentration drops, and once that happens, the risk of strain, sprain, or overuse injury rises sharply.

What we now commonly see is not only one major traumatic injury. Very often, the real problem is repetitive stress. A person who sits for long hours through the week suddenly plays an intense match on the weekend. Someone with poor core strength signs up for a run without progressive training. A gym user lifts with enthusiasm but without form, mobility or recovery. The body may tolerate this for some time, but eventually it starts sending signals in the form of knee pain, shoulder stiffness, ankle instability, back strain or recurrent swelling.

These are not small signs to be ignored. They are early warnings.

The value of a sports medicine specialist in Pune lies in identifying not just the site of pain, but the reason behind it. Is the problem coming from weak muscles, poor biomechanics, inadequate warm-up, overload, or an untreated structural issue? Unless this is understood properly, many people keep treating symptoms while the actual cause continues to worsen.

At times, when there is persistent locking of the knee, ligament injury, meniscal damage, or recurrent joint instability, further intervention may be required. In such cases, the role of an arthroscopy surgeon in Pune becomes important. Arthroscopy can help diagnose and treat select joint conditions with precision, while allowing a more focused path toward recovery. But even then, no treatment is complete without guided rehabilitation, strength rebuilding, and a carefully planned return to activity.

“People should not wait for a severe injury before taking orthopaedic advice. In many cases, early intervention, correct diagnosis, and structured rehabilitation can prevent long-term damage and help patients return to sport safely and confidently,” says Dr. Bhushan Shitole, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Vencer Hospital, Pune.

Pune should absolutely continue to play more, move more, and live more actively. But the city also needs to build a deeper understanding of how to move intelligently. Fitness is not just about motivation. It is about preparation, discipline, recovery, and respect for the body.

That is why sports medicine is no longer a niche field. In a city like Pune, it is becoming a necessary part of modern healthcare.

JEDDAH: The Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), the private sector arm of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a framework for strategic cooperation across key areas of private sector development and economic capacity building.

The agreement was signed at ICD Headquarters by H.E. Dr. Abdellah Souleymane Cheikh-Sidia, Minister of Economic Affairs and Cooperation, IsDB Governor, and the Acting CEO of ICD, Dr. Khalid Khalafalla, in the presence of H.E. Mohamed Lemine Dhehby, Central Bank of Mauritania, IsDB Alternate Governor, and senior officials from the IsDB Group and members of the Mauritanian delegation.

A central pillar of the MoU is ICD’s commitment, on a non-binding and best-effort basis, to arrange a Shariah-compliant syndicated or club financing facility of up to USD 900 million in favor of Mauritania Saudi Mining and Steel S.A. (Takamul). The facility will support the development of the Atomai iron ore project in the Tiris Zemmour mining region, encompassing an open-pit iron ore mine, beneficiation facilities, two pelletizing plants in Nouadhibou, and ancillary infrastructure, including power generation and water desalination, targeting an annual output of 10 million tonnes of High-Grade Direct Reduction Pellets.

Beyond this flagship initiative, the cooperation framework encompasses a range of activities aimed at strengthening Mauritania’s institutional foundations and broadening access to private sector financing. These include supporting Mauritania’s sovereign credit rating engagement, developing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) ecosystem, and extending lines of financing to local financial institutions to enhance SME access to capital. ICD will also work to identify and finance bankable projects in priority sectors, including energy.

Commenting on the signing, Dr. Khalid Khalafalla, Acting Chief Executive Officer of ICD, said: “We are honored to formalize this cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. This MoU reflects our commitment to deploying Shariah-compliant finance as a catalyst for sustainable development. From supporting one of the region’s most significant mining and industrial projects to building institutional capacity in areas such as PPP and sovereign credit rating readiness, ICD is proud to play a role in Mauritania’s long-term economic transformation.”

H.E. Abdullah Suleiman Sheikh Sidiya, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development and IsDB Governor for Mauritania, stated: “This partnership marks an important step in strengthening Mauritania’s efforts to accelerate sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Through this cooperation with ICD, we aim to mobilize innovative and Shariah-compliant financing solutions to support strategic investments, strengthen our institutional framework, and expand opportunities for private sector development. We particularly welcome ICD’s support in areas such as sovereign credit rating engagement, the development of a robust PPP ecosystem, and improving access to finance for SMEs. These initiatives will contribute to unlocking Mauritania’s economic potential and advancing our long-term development objectives.”

H.E. Mohamed Lemine Dhehby, Governor of the Central Bank of Mauritania and Alternate Governor of the IsDB Group, said: “Strengthening Mauritania’s sovereign credit profile is an important step toward deepening our integration into international financial markets and unlocking new sources of sustainable financing for our development priorities. We welcome ICD’s support in advancing our sovereign credit rating engagement and in reinforcing the financial ecosystem necessary to attract long-term investment. This collaboration will contribute to enhancing transparency, strengthening investor confidence, and supporting the continued development of Mauritania’s financial sector.”

GERMANY: Covestro is focusing on the entire value chain to create value for customers for accelerating the circular economy and also a monetization framework that enables investments in the circular economy. Innovation Projects and Circular Solutions that receive investment must be economically viable. This can only be achieved through the interplay of consumers, producers, regulation, and technical solutions. To achieve this, new approaches to the market launch of products and solutions are needed, as well as the development of employee skills and expertise.

To this end, Covestro and Monitor Deloitte 2023 launched a joint project entitled “Monetize Circular Economy”. This collaboration enabled Covestro to incorporate relevant methods and external perspectives into the entire development process.

The project pursued two main objectives. Firstly, to develop a scalable framework for market entry and commercialization of more sustainable, circular products and solutions. Secondly, to create added value in partnership. This includes, for example, developing solutions with customers so that they in turn can create added value for their customers with more sustainable solutions. These are, for example, working out end customer-relevant purchasing arguments or jointly implementing increasing sustainability standards. Covestro’s projects from various business entities formed the basis for developing a model.

A joint project team consisting of employees from various Covestro business entities and a mixed team from Deloitte led by chemicals expert Kai Göbel and Dr. Amadeus Petzke, Head of Pricing & Monetization, initially collected concrete projects on circular solutions across the Group. Three selected pilot projects formed the basis for the development of a marketing and business development approach that serves both as a blueprint for monetizing Covestro’s circular products and for new business development at Deloitte.

“Circular solutions must be profitable to be implemented. Economic incentives that motivate or demotivate stakeholders must be identified and addressed. For this, we need circular thinking, deep market understanding, and the creativity of our employees. We need a robust framework that our colleagues can use as a guide to drive business development in the circular economy. We are continuously developing this framework,” says Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer at Covestro.

WirtschaftsWoche 2024 has now honored this approach with the Best of Consulting Award in the Chemicals, Pharma & Healthcare sector.

Value creation cycle as the key

A decisive factor in monetization is the integration of the entire value chain, away from individual value creation steps and towards thinking in terms of a circular economy. “It’s not just about selling circular products, but about creating sustainable added value along the value chain together with partners and customers. Designing a framework based on specific Covestro industrial projects from start to finish was an exciting project. Winning the award is a great accolade and shows that we have succeeded,” says Bozidar Radner, Deloitte’s global key account manager for Covestro and Sector Head Chemicals. The management consultancy Deloitte was able to draw on extensive customer experience and requests from previous projects and learnings.

Development of the framework

Over one hundred Covestro employees identified key requirements for the monetization of circular solutions. In a structured approach consisting of four lab phases with coaching and review meetings in between, the teams successfully drove the pilot projects forward; at the same time, the insights gained led to the further development of the framework. Methodologies, case studies, and their importance, as well as the correct sequencing of a project’s progression, were explored and refined throughout the project, with real circular economy pilots forming the basis. An overarching project team from Covestro and Deloitte developed an internal platform for Covestro that provides resources, best practices, and tools such as ideas for customer outreach and legal guidelines for all Covestro business entities.

The result: a structured approach to accelerate the commercialization of circular solutions. This also includes raising awareness among the workforce. An accompanying webinar series, for example, promotes global exchange with internal circular economy (CE) experts and drives the further development of the market entry and commercialization strategy. In concrete terms, implementing the monetization approach in the operational business also means incorporating the circular economy mindset into the initial customer exchange jointly identifying added value, and developing solutions in partnership-based customer discussions. For example, there are “Monetize CE Pioneers”, a group of employees at Covestro who are available to colleagues around the world and who exchange information on their specialist areas and contribute their knowledge of various industries.

The vision of the circular economy and successful monetization are thus continuously developed.

Planning to develop a competitive framework for the growth of Gymnastics in India

Partners with Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association (MAGA) to host the first Gymnastics Championship under the newly developed competitive framework on May 11 & 12

MUMBAI: Leap Gymnastics is an initiative of the JSW Group’s expanding commitment to pioneer the development of sports in India. It is focused on introducing Gymnastics to a wider base of Indians and creating a strong foundation that will develop athletes at the elite performance level who will eventually aim to compete at global championships including the Olympics 2032. During the last 18 months, since its inception, Leap Gymnastics has trained more than 1,000 gymnastics enthusiasts in Mumbai. In the next five years, Leap Gymnastics plans to train and develop more than 10,000 gymnasts across the country.

Gymnastics is one of the best foundation sports for physical literacy which becomes even more important and relevant for India where participation levels in sports and physical activity have significant room for improvement compared to global benchmarks. This includes providing a strong foundation in ABC of physical literacy (agility, balance, and coordination); enhancing motor skills, body posture and improving muscle/bone health, and supporting mental, emotional, and social development.

JSW Group’s Leap Gymnastics initiative will develop a robust sports ecosystem ranging from developing world-class gymnastics centers, progressive training curriculums, and structured pathways for high-performance sports; to international collaborations to develop a unified competitive framework for India; to coach, and judge development. Leap Gymnastics’ belief stems from India’s untapped potential in the sport to develop its capabilities and the opportunity to compete for the 42 Olympic medals in this sport.

As a first step in this direction, Leap Gymnastics has partnered with International Gymnastics Expert Kym Dowdell, Member and former Vice-President of the International Gymnastics Federation Technical Committee, to develop a holistic Competitive Framework for Gymnastics in India. This Competitive Framework has been developed through a deep examination of fundamental, compulsory, optional, and high-performance programs in countries that are successfully growing the sport of gymnastics, both in participation and performance. Moreover, through its collaboration with Kym, Leap Gymnastics has also developed the Judge Education and Accreditation System for strengthening the Gymnastics coaching & judging ecosystem in the country.

The Competitive Framework developed by Kym Dowdell through Leap Gymnastics aims to increase participation and improve the performance levels of Indian Gymnasts. It has 3 core parts – Fundamental, Performance, and High-Performance pathways with detailed technical requirements and evaluation processes. The Framework is supported through video-based educational tools for the development of fundamental skills and compulsory routines.

According to Kym Dowdell, “The newly developed Competitive Framework aims to increase participation, improve performance levels, and assist new clubs to develop a gymnastic curriculum. The compulsories will ensure there is progressive development and consistent evaluation for all gymnasts in competition. The optional program will allow Indian gymnasts to further develop and demonstrate their skills in optional routines at three different grades. The final high-performance program is for the development of high-performance gymnasts who at an appropriate time transition from either the compulsory or optional grades.”

According to Ria Vardhan, CEO of Leap Gymnastics, “We have begun implementation of the new competitive framework in Maharashtra by conducting an orientation workshop in Pune, engaging over 250 coaches, judges, and officials from the state. We have supplemented this with a comprehensive coaches and judges education course aimed at familiarizing state officials with technical guidelines and judging protocols under the new framework. The coaches workshop was attended by 120 coaches and 85 Judges enrolled for the Judges Course.”

Leap Gymnastics has also partnered with Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association (MAGA) to pilot the Competition Framework and Judge Education and Accreditation System at competitions & championships in Maharashtra. The success of this operating pilot program will provide a pathway for the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) and its adoption across all other states.

India’s first-ever structured Gymnastics Championship

As part of its partnership with MAGA, Leap Gymnastics will host the first club gymnastics championship – Leap Invitational Gymnastics Championship 2024 on May 11 and 12. This will be the first championship to be organized according to the new competition framework adopted by MAGA. More than 250 gymnasts from across Maharashtra are expected to participate in the championship. The competition will be hosted for WAG and MAG (National Grades 4 – 7) which are based on compulsory routines. Leap will also be hosting multiple competitions during the year.

At present, JSW Group and the Inspire Institute of Sport scout & train talented Indian athletes in six disciplines including Football, Boxing, Wrestling, Swimming, Judo, and Track & Field. India has qualified only twice in gymnastics during the last 70 years, while Russia, the USA & China account for the highest medal tallies in this sports discipline. The lack of modern training facilities; structured curriculum-based progressive training programs; availability of skilled coaches and a level-based competition framework have been the key reasons behind India’s weak presence in gymnastics. Moreover, the elitist label of this sport has been a significant deterrent to mass interest & adoption of this discipline in the country so far. Leap Gymnastics will focus on the following goals:

Build India’s capability in Gymnastics by establishing a high-performance training center for Indian gymnasts competing at Indian & Global championships. It plans to establish a high-performance center by 2027.

Develop India’s Ecosystem for Gymnastics by providing a world-class training environment for competitive athletes along with a performance pathway. By 2030, Leap Gymnastics will establish 10 centers to offer training & development facilities. The Leap Developmental Centres will also have the capability to host regional championships.

Build the foundation of gymnastics and increase accessibility to the sport, Leap Gymnastics will establish 15 Leap Recreational Centres to serve as satellite hubs to expand its reach for training talent in India. These Centres will also deliver introductory gymnastics training programs to its member gymnasts.

Create a capability ecosystem through the introduction of a world-class competition framework, progressive curriculum, upskilling of judges and coaches.

Amongst all the pay and play sports programs at JSW Sports, Gymnastics at Leap Gymnastics has been the fastest growing programme. This is a testament to the demand for the sport in urban India and the growth strategy focusing on quality coaching, broad-basing the sport, infrastructure and making it accessible for Indian gymnast enthusiasts.

INDIA: The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved CRISIL ESG Ratings & Analytics Ltd (CRISIL ESG Ratings), a wholly owned subsidiary of CRISIL Ratings Ltd (CRL), as a Category 1 provider of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings.

Says Amish Mehta, Managing Director and CEO, of CRISIL Ltd, “It is our stated aim to grow sustainably and we are excited to have a license that reinforces our stewardship of this space. The approval comes at an opportune time when ESG disclosures have been improving and there is increasing realization in the financial markets on the need for independent ESG ratings that will support decision-making for issuers and investors, and channel funds towards sustainable growth of the Indian economy.”

The approval follows SEBI notifications amending the SEBI (Credit Rating Agencies) Regulations, 1999 to include provisions on ESG Rating Providers (ERPs). According to, and to comply with, these notifications, CRISIL ESG Ratings was incorporated.

CRISIL is the pioneer of credit ratings in India and has steered many innovations in the space over the past 37 years.

CRISIL Ltd launched its ESG ‘scoring’ business in 2021 and gradually expanded coverage from 225 to ~1,000 companies across ~65 sectors. This business will now be transferred to CRISIL ESG Ratings.

Says Gurpreet Chhatwal, Managing Director, CRISIL Ratings, “The ESG scores, which will henceforth be called ‘ESG ratings’, have already found traction among market participants. These are based on a unique India-specific framework that factors nuances at the sectoral level while guided by global best practices. The process includes analysis of more than 500 unique data points across the environmental, social and governance aspects for each company.”

Eyes a strong market share among 40L MSMEs in Maharashtra in the next 3 years

INDIA: Tally Solutions, a leading name in the Business Management Software (BMS) industry, announces the launch of its new endeavor to educate over 6 lakh MSMEs in Pune and across Maharashtra about the benefits of the Account Aggregator (AA) Framework. The AA framework was launched by the Reserve Bank of India in the year 2016 to boost the open-banking ecosystem. Aligned with this, Tally launched its subsidiary, Tally Account Aggregator Services Pvt Ltd, with its product TallyEdge allowing users to effortlessly consolidate all their financial information from various financial entities in one place; with the capability to view or share that information securely, in real-time and only with their consent.

There are over 40 lakh MSMEs in Maharashtra registered with Udayam who can benefit from the account aggregator once on-boarded as part of their digital journey. Ensuring 100% secure digital data access, and consent-based data sharing with financial institutions, TallyEdge will help create easy access to the lending ecosystem and other financial services for these MSMEs. Industry projections indicate a significant credit gap of 25 trillion in the nation, with Maharashtra registering the highest debt demand at 20%. Tally aims to sensitise the MSME ecosystem and raise awareness about the benefits of AA, to mitigate this credit gap.

According to Samir Dixit, General Manager – West Zone, Tally Solutions, “As a key player in the Business Management Software (BMS) sector, we currently hold a 75% market share in the country and Maharashtra plays a significant role. With TallyEdge, our goal is to further extend our support to MSMEs facing challenges in accessing formal lending. In Pune, we are set to organize a series of awareness sessions in partnership with our allies and industry bodies in the coming months to promote an in-depth understanding of the AA framework and its potential for businesses”.

“With our commitment to further augment the MSME ecosystem, we aspire to onboard nearly 20 lakh businesses in India onto TallyEdge within the next 3 years. TallyEdge provides users with comprehensive control over their data, allowing them to effortlessly approve, reject, pause, or revoke any data-sharing requests. We are confident that through TallyEdge, we will not only strengthen the account aggregator ecosystem in the region but also empower more MSMEs to achieve their growth vision”, added Vikas Shetty, General Manager – Financial Services, Tally Solution.

In the initial phase, the awareness efforts will cascade through their extensive partner network in the region. Furthermore, the brand looks forward to partnering with large financial institutions to extend its reach. Through these efforts, Tally aims to make a substantial contribution to facilitating the formal lending journey of MSMEs.
