MUMBAI: The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has certified Škoda Auto India’s 1.0 TSI engine to be E20 compliant. This marks Škoda among the first few OEMs to receive E20 compliance from an official body.

Speaking on the certification, Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Škoda Auto India, said: “Along with making cars that lead in driving dynamics and safety, efficiency, and sustainability have also been at the center of our product and production practices. TSI technology has been time-tested and proven for efficiency and emissions while being effectively powered. We have evolved and adapted this technology to various updates in standards and policies across the globe. The 1.0 TSI especially, with its 3-cylinder turbo configuration tuned for power and efficiency is a versatile powertrain, and the E20 certification is a testament to this. We are confident of a similar outcome when the 1.5 TSI is tested, later this year.”

The certification

The 1.0 TSI is now among the first few engines in India to receive an E20 certification by an official body. The 1.0 TSI powers the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan in Škoda Auto India’s line-up. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The 1.5 TSI powering these two cars is also undergoing tests. The results of this are tentatively slated for Q4 2024. The Indian government has made it mandatory for all cars from April 1, 2025, to be E20 compliant. The E20 fuel blend consists of 20% ethanol – made from renewable sources like corn, sugarcane, or biomass — and 80% petrol. This reduces the amount of fossil fuel per liter and emissions.

The engine

The 1.0 TSI makes 85kW of power (115ps) and 178Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. While the engine is available across variants in the Kushaq and the Slavia, the E20-compliant engine made its debut in the recently introduced Kushaq Onyx AT and will eventually make it to every 1.0 TSI Škoda to roll off the production line from Chakan, Pune.

MUMBAI: Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) announced that Acelen Renewables has selected its Ecofining technology to help support the efficient production of a targeted 20,000 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The fuels will be processed at Acelen’s facility in Bahia, Brazil, from a blend of inedible seed and waste oils. With this agreement, Acelen Renewables becomes the 50th site to license Honeywell’s renewable fuels technology.

Honeywell’s Ecofining process, which was developed in collaboration with Eni SpA, offers a capital- and cost-effective solution for processing waste fats, oils, and greases into renewable diesel and SAF. Blended with conventional jet fuel, the use of SAF can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels.^[1] Ecofining has been in use since 2013 for renewable diesel and in 2016 for SAF production, making it a proven tool for helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, particularly in air travel.

Over the past two years, Honeywell has seen rapidly increasing demand for renewable fuel technologies, including Ecofining. This growth tracks with international decarbonization efforts—especially in air travel. Initiatives like the SAF Grand Challenge and SAF tax credit in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act as well as the European Council’s ‘Fit for 55’ package have set in motion key drivers to expand SAF production, accelerating the energy transition and aviation’s journey to net-zero emissions.

“The dramatic growth in demand for renewable fuels technology illustrates that fuel producers are accelerating adoption of solutions to help meet ambitious decarbonization goals,” said Ken West, president and CEO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. “Our 50^th license is a testament to Honeywell’s leadership in renewable fuels. Acelen Renewables joins a roster of companies around the world currently licensing Honeywell’s renewable fuels technology, including BP, CVR Energy, Diamond Green Diesel, Eni, Repsol, Total Energies, and World Energy. Of the 50 licenses, eight facilities are already in operation and more than 40 licensed plants are slated to be operational by 2030. The combined renewable fuel capacity of these plants when functioning to peak efficiency will exceed 500,000 barrels per day.

PUNE: In a bid to provide solutions to the futuristic needs of the automotive sector, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has developed some futuristic solutions and has showcased the same in the ongoing Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) 2024 at Pune International Exhibition and ConventionCentre (PIECC), Moshi. The Expo is on till January 25th. The prominent features are the showcase of fast charging systems for electric heavy commercial vehicles like trucks and buses, specially made battery management systems for skilling and training purposes, and the hydrogen pavilion.

The world is looking at alternate fuels for the energy needs of vehicles and electric vehicles are steadily gaining popularity. Batteries are one of the most important parts of these e-vehicles and so is the battery management system. Considering the training needs of skilled manpower which will be required to cater to the development and service needs of electric vehicles ARAI academy has introduced a specially designed Battery Management System Trainer (BMST) which is ideally suited for the budding engineers and technocrats for understanding the overall functioning of the battery and its various parts, informed Sanjay Patil from the ARAI Academy. This BMST will have special features like monitoring Individual Cells, Temperature, Pack Level Current, CAN Communication Data, and Real-Time Display. It can be applied in Education and Training, BMS Development, Student Projects, and Hands-on Experience for Industry Professionals.

While the use of electric vehicles is growing, an effective option for fast charging of the vehicle is of paramount importance. Going forward, heavy commercial vehicles like trucks and buses will also be electric ones. Thus, to cater to the need for charging these big vehicles, ARAI is in the advanced stages of developing the Overhead Automated Charging Device (OHACD). These charges of about 600KW capacity would charge the vehicle from 0 to 80% in just 25 minutes. The time taken by the current 100KW charger to charge the passenger car is about 3 – 4 hours. The OHACD technology will be introduced to the market in the next one to one and a half years, stated Abhijit Mulay, Deputy Director of ARAI.

S. S. Thipse, Senior Deputy Director of ARAI said that Hydrogen is a clean fuel and is the fuel of the future. So, ARAI has showcased the latest technology in hydrogen vehicles through a specially dedicated pavilion at the SIAT 2024 Expo. The latest in hydrogen fuel technology is displayed at this pavilion including the H2 Fuel Cell Bus, H2 IC Engine, H2 Type4 Cylinder, H2 Fuel Kit, and H2 ICE Truck. ARAI is developing the testing and certification model for hydrogen-powered vehicles and their components. It is also in the advanced stages of developing a hydrogen-powered engine which will be BSVI-compliant.

The hard-to-abate Aviation Industry is one of the largest consumers of fossil fuels and an emitter of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). According to the India Brand Equity Foundation 2023 report, the Government has set a target to operationalize 1,000 UDAN routes and to revive 100 airports by 2024. Thus, India is the third-largest and fastest-growing civil aviation market in the world. The low-carbon SAF has a significant role in helping India achieve its net zero goal targets by 2070.

It may be noted that around 3% of all GHG emissions worldwide are currently attributable to aviation. Unless controlled, otherwise the emissions may zoom to as much as 22% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions from the aviation sector by 2050. Harnessing Sustainable Aviation Fuels is regarded as the most promising pathway for helping achieve this target.

Single Module Aftertreatment System 

Cummins is also showcasing its ultra-high efficiency aftertreatment system 9-inch (0.229 Meters) Single Module. This innovative system is up to 70% smaller and 40% lighter compared to systems with similar architectures. It offers improved NOx conversion efficiency that removes over 99% of all particulate matter (PM) by weight and count. The product is optimized with a liquid-only, freeze-robust UL2.2 dosing system, which significantly improves reliability. ‘Made in India’ with over 70% localized components, this product readily adapts to a variety of applications as it is available in catalyst diameters ranging from 5.66 inches (0.144 meters) to 13 inches (0.330 meters).

The Indian lithium-ion battery market is rapidly growing and, according to analysts, is expected to reach a value of US$ 25,309.59 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 22.1% within the forecast period.

With India aiming to achieve its 500 GW renewable energy capacity target by 2030, the government has projected the energy storage capacity requirement by the same year to be 41.65 GW from Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with storage of 208.25 GWh to address the intermittency of renewable energy and balance the grid.

In addition, the Indian government’s initiatives to electrify its domestic transport are fueling the growing popularity of EVs, and today, 90% of India’s 2.3 million EVs fall under the two- or three-wheeler categories.

In India, electric tricycle rickshaws, a common and affordable mode of public transport, need batteries with 3000 cycle capacities at 45°C. However, the current capacity averages around 1000 cycles. noco-noco’s X-SEPA technology allows for 3000 cycles at 60°C while maintaining performance at 0°C. Importantly, it has demonstrated no abnormalities, such as short-circuits or fire-causing swelling, even when cells embedded with the technology were exposed to 150°C conditions for an hour. The launch of the HALEU program will enable the UK to supply the world with specialist nuclear fuel and further isolate Putin’s Russia. An additional £10 million will also be provided to develop the skills and sites to produce other advanced nuclear fuels in the UK, helping to secure long-term domestic nuclear fuel supply and support international allies.

The funding will boost the North West of England’s nuclear fuel production hub, supporting local industry and jobs while helping to expand the UK’s nuclear revival both domestically and overseas. This is vital to meeting global net zero targets and reducing dependence on Russian fuel.

Advanced modular reactors will play an important role in the UK’s nuclear revival, as they are smaller, can be made in factories, and could transform how power stations are built by making construction faster and less expensive. Many designs have the potential for a range of applications beyond low-carbon electricity generation, including the production of hydrogen or industrial heat.

The UK’s work to displace Russia from the global nuclear fuels market, particularly in uranium conversion services, is also ongoing. The government and industry are together investing up to £26 million to bring this capability back to the UK by the end of the decade.

Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Claire Coutinho, said: “We stood up to Putin on oil and gas and financial markets, we won’t let him hold us to ransom on nuclear fuel. Britain gave the world its first operational nuclear power plant, and now we will be the first nation in Europe outside of Russia to produce advanced nuclear fuel. These plans will help build new supplies of affordable and clean domestic power so the transition to net zero doesn’t mean higher prices, protecting households from global instability.“
