STAMFORD: The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) has been participating in raising funds for the Bennett Cancer Center of Stamford Hospital for the last 16 years. On Sunday, June 8th, GOPIO-CT participated in a walkathon at Stamford’s Mill River Park. The funds collected help cancer patients and their families during their stay at Stamford Hospital. Funds are also used specifically for patients’ rides to and from treatment, nutrition counseling, acupuncture, and other services at no charge to patients at the Bennett Cancer Center.

OPIO-CT was a sponsor of the event along with other corporations and non-profits. Each GOPIO-CT participant also raised funds. The chapter has been participating in the event for the last 14 years. This year, GOPIO-CT met more than exceeded its goal of raising over $2,500. The program was coordinated by GOPIO-CT Board member Anita Mathur.

Over the last 19 years, GOPIO-CT, a chapter of GOPIO International, has become an active and dynamic organization hosting interactive sessions with policymakers and academicians, community events, youth mentoring and networking workshops, and working with other area organizations to help create a better future. GOPIO-CT – Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – serves as a non-partisan, secular, civic and community service organization – promoting awareness of Indian culture, customs, and contributions of people of Indian origin through community programs, forums, events, and youth activities. It seeks to strengthen partnerships and create an ongoing dialogue with local communities.
