NEW DELHI: The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), in collaboration with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), organised a first-of-its-type roundtable conference themed “Gas se Gati, Bharat ki Pragati” at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event brought together government dignitaries, industry leaders, and experts to deliberate on the transformative role of gas-based mobility, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), to drive sustainable urban and long-haul transportation in India. This event, organised under SIAM’s गैस गतिशीलता (Gas Mobility) initiative, supported the adoption of clean and efficient gas-based mobility solutions in India.

Delivering the opening address and highlighting India’s commitment to cleaner and sustainable fuel alternatives, Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, said, “Today’s initiative reflects the commitment to further Gas-based mobility in India. Globally, we are the largest Gas-fuel utilizing country in the mobility sector, and we are not stopping there. Industry is committed to CNG adoption. India started adopting CNG for cars, and gradually, we became the biggest gas-based bus and three-wheeler fleet operating nation. Last year’s launch of the world’s first 2W CNG vehicle marks another milestone in India’s CNG journey.”

Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, underlined, “India’s USD 240 billion auto industry is pivotal to achieving carbon neutrality by 2047 and advancing Viksit Bharat through reduced fossil fuel dependence. Gas-based mobility, supported by the PLI scheme with three CNG vehicle components and 11 of 103 components for gas powertrains, is a key driver for the same. Localisation of these components and technologies will strengthen efforts towards Atmanirbhar Bharat while positioning gas mobility as a critical factor in our sustainable and self-reliant future.”

Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, said, “The agriculture sector generates 228 MMT of agri waste, contributing to poor air quality with health costs estimated at USD 35 billion. Converting just 10% of our oil imports to CBG could have a transformative impact. With only 200 CBG plants in India, demand creation is critical, and Indian auto OEMs can lead by building a global hub for green automobiles. CNG infrastructure upgrades will pave the way for CBG adoption, enabling farmers to convert agricultural waste into energy, reducing stubble burning, and positioning India to capture the global market.”

Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., said, “The transport sector is pivotal to India’s energy transition. The government’s continuous support has achieved the target of installing nearly 10,000 CNG stations by 2025. A domestic gas pricing mechanism has created employment for 3 lakh people. Compressed Biogas (CBG) transforms rural infrastructure, benefiting farmers, pollution control, and the economy. LNG’s role in sustainable mobility is promising with enhanced distribution infrastructure. India leads in CNG two-wheelers, with OEMs driving innovation, improving fuel efficiency from 26 km/kg to 34 km/kg, and dedicating more R&D for consumer-friendly solutions.”

Dr. Sujit Kumar Bajpayee, Member, Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), highlighted, “Delhi NCR, with PM10 emission averaging over 200 last year, faces multisectoral pollution. The CAQM is working in mission mode, phasing out end-of-life vehicles, redeveloping 68 roads in Delhi NCR to control dust, and reducing stubble burning by 86% in Punjab and 66% in Haryana. Transitioning to CNG, CBG, and LNG is a necessity, not a choice. Bio-CNG’s decentralisation potential can turn pollution into power.”

Dr. Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson, PNGRB, delivered the keynote address by stating,“The energy transition in India’s transport sector is well underway, with decarbonisation playing a pivotal role. With the manufacturing sector contributing heavily, the gas sector is utilising existing infrastructure to drive this shift. The strong growth in CNG adoption as a transition fuel is a success story we must continue to advance, ensuring gas-based mobility supports India’s sustainable future.”

D Balakrishnan, Co-Chair, SIAM Gas-Based Mobility Group and Vice President (PD), Ashok Leyland Ltd., delivered the closing remarks for the inaugural session.

The thematic session, themed “Accelerating Future Growth and Promoting Gas-Based Mobility”, chaired by Ved Prakash Mishra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, highlighted, “SIAM is consistently supporting the Government in sustainable initiatives and gas-based mobility. Until the transition to EVs takes place, gas will continue to play an important role. The use of gas can help reduce pollution and CO₂ emissions. Over the last 10 years, significant positive changes have been observed in Delhi with the increased adoption of CNG. We aim to reduce pollution and achieve a cleaner future by strengthening collaboration to facilitate gas-based mobility.”

The session featured insights from Dr. Mukesh Sharma, Professor, IIT Kanpur, who noted, “Air pollution, high oil dependency, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel cost volatility pose significant challenges to India’s mobility. IIT Kanpur’s source apportionment and action plans for 18 non-attainment cities, including Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, are critical for targeted interventions. Transitioning from BS-IV to CNG vehicles has achieved up to 90-95% PM reduction, highlighting the transformative potential of gas-based mobility in improving air quality and sustainability.”

Dr. Gaurav Mishra, Scientist-F, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, said, “With India’s renewable energy capacity at 219.2 GW, bioenergy accounts for 11.5%, with a biopower potential of 42 GW from surplus agricultural residue and bagasse. Promoting bioenergy and waste-to-energy technologies, such as CBG, enhances energy security, reduces fossil fuel dependency, and mitigates environmental impacts.”

The session also included presentations by Subhash Kumar, Director General, Association of CGD Entities (ACE) on “Expanding City Gas Distribution Networks: Enhancing Urban Mobility and Sustainability”; Ashu Shinghal, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Ltd. on “Challenges & Opportunities in Gas Based Mobility”, and Milind J Pagare, Vice President (R&D), Bajaj Auto Ltd. on “Emerging New Automobile Technologies of 2025 and Beyond: 2wheeler & 3-Wheeler perspective”.The session was moderated by Payal Goel, Director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP.

Roads constructed with lignin bio-bitumen blended at up to 15%, can achieve a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to conventional fossil-based bitumen

PUNE: Praj Industries, India’s leading industrial biotech company has announced the inauguration of the country’s first sustainable road made using lignin-based biobitumen. Inaugurated by the Hon. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, this road is at the Nagpur-Mansar Bypass project, NH 44. This eco-friendly technology can partially replace fossil-derived bitumen and is being used to create the country’s first national highway.

Praj’s proprietary technology refines crude lignin into Lignin Bio-Bitumen and has the potential to replace fossil-based bitumen and offer sustainable solutions to the road infrastructure industry. This green construction material, with a blending capacity of up to 15%, offers significant benefits, including a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil-based bitumen. India would require ~15 lakh tons of bio-bitumen to achieve 15% blending with conventional bitumen. Through this investment, India can save ₹4000-4,500 crore on foreign exchange, marking a transformative step toward sustainable and eco-friendly road infrastructure.

Commenting on this development, Shri. Nitin Gadkari, Hon. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, congratulated Praj on the successful development of this technology saying, “The biobitumen used in this project, developed by Praj Industries in collaboration with CSIR-CRRI, is a significant step toward sustainability. It reduces our dependency on imported bitumen and provides an innovative solution by turning agricultural waste into a valuable resource.” He also expressed that in the future, our farmers will not only be food providers but also energy providers, producing biohydrogen and contributing to a cleaner and greener India.

In a collaborative project with CSIR- Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Praj tested the lignin-based bio-bitumen sample for application studies, successfully replacing up to 15% of bitumen. Praj laid a service road in Halol, Gujarat using Lignin Bio Bitumen as one of the components. After 2.5 years and 3 monsoon seasons, CSIR-CRRI conducted the performance evaluation, and the results were found satisfactory with no signs of distress on the road. This success was one of the key factors in building the Nagpur-Mansar project.

Talking about this milestone, Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman, Praj Industries said, “The inauguration of India’s first sustainable road using a lignin-based bio-bitumen is a proud moment for Praj Industries and a testament to India’s commitment towards a greener and self-reliant future. This innovative lignin-based bio-bitumen, developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, not only replaces fossil-based bitumen but also helps save significant foreign exchange, strengthening our nation’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. We deeply thank the Hon. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support in fostering sustainable infrastructure development. As we look toward the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047, we are also advancing our efforts in bio-hydrogen development, which holds immense potential to transform India’s energy landscape and contribute to a sustainable future. At Praj, we remain dedicated to pioneering eco-friendly solutions contributing to nation-building and global climate goals.”

Bitumen, a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons produced by fractionation of crude oil, serves as a crucial binder in road construction. However, the rapid consumption and future demand of this product require a sustainable solution to attain the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. According to oil ministry data, India’s bitumen consumption in 2023-24 was 88 lakh tons and is expected to rise to 100 lakh tons in 2024-25. 50% of this bitumen is imported, incurring an annual import cost of ₹25,000-30,000 crore for the country.

These efforts build on the company’s track record of sharply reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities as well as its decades-long history of innovation to help its customers meet their environmental and social goals. In 2021, approximately 60 percent of Honeywell’s new product introduction research and development investment was directed toward products that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers.

MUMBAI: Gogoro Inc. has announced a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) to roll out battery swapping stations to thousands of HPCL retail gas outlets across India in the coming years. The partnership aims to develop a broad battery-swapping infrastructure for two-wheel vehicles that will grow and sustain a leading electric vehicle ecosystem in India that is safe, clean, and readily available across India’s cities.

Horace Luke, founder and CEO of Gogoro, said, “India is in the early stages of a massive electric transformation of its urban two-wheel transportation system, and it is increasingly evident that battery swapping is a critical component to broad adoption, so building out the swapping infrastructure is crucial.”

Amit Garg, Director of Marketing at HPCL, said, “Gogoro has demonstrated its global leadership in battery swapping and electric two-wheel innovation and with nearly 500 million battery swaps to date has developed a platform we can embrace and emulate.“

The Gogoro Network is a new generation of swappable battery refueling that is smart, safe, and continually optimizing itself to be dynamic and versatile for riders, businesses, and communities. The Gogoro Network supports nearly 600,000 riders and has more than 1.3 million smart batteries in circulation through its network of 12,000 battery-swapping stations at over 2,500 locations. With more than 400,000 daily battery swaps and nearly 500 million total battery swaps to date, Gogoro Network battery swapping has saved more than 750,000 tons of CO2 since it launched.

The partnership between Gogoro and HPCL aims to deploy a battery-swapping and electric vehicle ecosystem that is open, accessible, and scalable. The challenge is massive, but the opportunity to disrupt the status quo, establish new standards, and achieve new levels of sustainable transportation growth in densely populated cities is even greater.

PUNE: Pune Gas, formerly known as Pune Gasparts and Services Private Limited, has unveiled the world’s first Micro LPG System designed exclusively for commercial LPG customers. The system, developed in collaboration with German partners Flussiggas-Anlagen GmbH, is a game-changer for various industries, especially for the HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, and Catering) industry.

The LOT system (Liquid Off Take) is the world’s first high-efficiency dry-type vaporizer and has advanced safety features. The Micro LPG System has the potential to unlock savings of up to 1200 Cr per annum for commercial customers and for the country as a whole, which is not achieved due to LPG residue currently being left unusable in the 19kg commercial cylinders. Optimizing LPG usage and reducing wastage, aligns perfectly with India’s goals for sustainable energy utilization.

Jesal Sampat, Executive Director, of Pune Gas, said, “I’m thrilled to introduce LPGenius, a true game-changer in the world of LPG management. LPGenius reflects our commitment to innovation and efficiency. With its compact design, rapid setup, enhanced safety features, and enabling zero residue in LPG cylinders, it’s a testament to our dedication to delivering sustainable, intelligent solutions for our customers.“

Pune Gas

The system offers the flexibility of using single or dual Liquid Off-Take (LOT) cylinders, allowing for easy LPG usage. Users can select from two LPG output capacities, with options for 5 kg/hr or 10 kg/hr. Safety is paramount, with all essential safety features integrated into the system to guarantee a secure operation. The system incorporates a vaporizer with a capacity of up to 15 kg/hr, ensuring a steady LPG supply. It is ergonomically designed to be compact and offers plug-and-play convenience, eliminating the need for installation hassles and saving valuable time.

Pune Gas, a pioneer in providing solutions for industrial and commercial gas users, has taken on the challenge of finding a sustainable remedy for the issue of LPG residue left unused in commercial cylinders. Their Micro LPG System aims to redefine how commercial LPG users engage with cylinders, making it more efficient and cost-effective. This solution is compact, organized, and efficient, making it an excellent option for commercial LPG users who are looking for a hassle-free and safe solution to the problem of cylinder sweating and freezing.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA: FBS, a licensed global broker with over 14 years of experience and more than 75 international awards has presented an overview of the most significant macroeconomic trends traders should consider in the fourth quarter of 2023. The brand’s mission is to equip traders with tools and knowledge to conquer the financial markets, and its financial market analysts have compiled an exhaustive list of three major Q4 challenges to the stock markets.

The global economy has not yet recovered from the pressing geopolitical and social risks of the past two years, and the turbulence is expected to continue in Q4 and into 2024. FBS analysts have identified the three most prominent tendencies that could push financial market volatility in the upcoming months.

Firstly, migration policy in the EU and the US could trigger regional disintegration, leading to an increased allocation of safe-haven assets like gold, making them a favorable investment target for the near future. Secondly, prolonged tight monetary policy could slow down stock markets in 2023, and the market is realizing the low possibility of stimulating monetary policy from regulators by the end of the year. Thus, in Q4, particular attention should be paid to European and American stock indices, as seasonality may provide significant support, and shares (especially on American exchanges) may rise. Nevertheless, the risks of continued decline may remain present even in 2024. Lastly, deglobalization of the energy market; Over the past years, the largest energy supply countries, including the Gulf members and Russia, have gradually disconnected from the European energy market. At the same time, the current vector of European policy and the EU’s shift from traditional energy sources will solidify the energy market. Consequently, in Q4, oil and gas prices are expected to remain stable or experience local fluctuations, potentially affecting global markets.

FBS Analysts indicate that financial markets will be challenged by political actions toward energy supplies and the development of monetary and migration policies for the rest of 2023 and beyond. Thus, traders should focus on agile trading strategies, exploit seasonality trends, and focus on defensive assets and mid-to-low volatility stocks.

JOHANNESBURG: Namibia’s energy sector is on the brink of a significant transformation, thanks to the discovery of substantial oil and gas reserves, ambitious renewable and green hydrogen projects, and the government’s proactive approach to attracting new investment. ExxonMobil is one of the companies making progress in unlocking the full potential of the southern African country’s energy sector.

Taimi Itembu, the Deputy Country Manager at ExxonMobil Namibia, is at the forefront of this agenda. She continues to make great strides towards leveraging policy dialogue and partnership building to drive the company’s Namibian activities. Itembu is featured on the African Energy Chamber’s list of 25 Under 40 Energy Women Rising Stars.

In an interview, Itembu shared that her journey started in public administration and policy, both internationally with the US State Department and nationally with the judiciary and parliament. She has had an upward and steep trajectory working as Public and Government Affairs Manager for ExxonMobil and now as the Deputy Country Manager.

When asked about the challenges she faced in the industry, Itembu said that the industry is challenging but mostly accommodating. The size of the industry is monstrous, making it hard to move, but with intentional advocacy and patience, they are able to move the needle and close the gender gap.

To young females aspiring to excel in the energy sector, Itembu advised that there is a place for everyone in the industry, not just engineers, financiers, or geoscientists. It is an industry to learn and grow your career beyond oil and gas.

A typical day in Itembu’s life involves a lot of negotiations and engagements with governments, national oil companies, and other public stakeholders. Looking ahead, she hopes to see advancements in the energy sector, focusing on a low-carbon future. ExxonMobil is the global leader in low carbon solutions, specifically around Carbon Capture and Storage, and Itembu feels good to be part of the solution.

Senegal is investing heavily in infrastructure to promote transportation and economic growth and the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2023 conference – which is organized by Energy Capital & Power – will highlight investment and partnership opportunities within the West African country’s infrastructure segment

LUANDA, ANGOLA: The Emerging Senegal Plan – a framework for the country’s economic and social policy – prioritizes infrastructure development and aims to drive long-term growth on the back of private investment. The strategy is divided into two phases, with the first relying on public investment-led growth and the second prioritizing private investment.

To support this, the government established a new public-private partnership statute in 2021 to boost private sector involvement and reduce the government’s financial burden, leading to the launch of several large-scale infrastructure projects.

Dakar Bus Rapid Transit Project

The Dakar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is a comprehensive metropolitan program that aims to provide high-quality transportation. It entails a mass transportation system comprised of large-capacity electric buses that operate solely in dedicated lanes. The BRT project, which is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023, will cover a route of 18.3 km, traveling through 14 communes and serving around 300,000 people daily. The BRT, which is being funded by both the World Bank and the European Investment Bank (https://apo-opa.info/3PRDR7z), will cut travel time from an average of 95 minutes to 45 minutes, enabling increased urban mobility and access to employment and markets.

Phase II of the Regional Express Train

The 19-km connection between Diamniadio and Blaise-Diagne International Airport is expected to be finished by the end of 2023, with the addition of seven more trains. When the line is finished, the journey from Dakar to the airport (55 km) will take 50 minutes at a peak speed of 160 km/h. Firms Equans and Thales are in charge of signaling and electrification, while firms Eiffage, ENGIE Ineo, and Alstom are in charge of construction. In an interview with Energy Capital & Power, Malick Guaye, First Deputy at the Municipality of Sandiara, indicated that the train should eventually reach the city’s special economic zone.

Port of Ndayane

Construction on the planned port of Ndayane began in April 2023 and is projected to be completed in 2026, making it one of the major ports in West Africa. The project, which spans over 1,500 hectares, is funded by the Senegalese government with a 40% stake and Dubai Port World with the remaining 60%, as well as help from foreign banks. The port’s goal is to accommodate larger vessels and manage more cargo, increasing the transportation sector and cementing Senegal’s status as a key economic hub in West Africa. The first phase of development will feature a 5 km marine waterway and a container terminal of 840 meters. A 300-hectare special economic zone will be linked to the port.

Dakar-Thiès-Tivaouane-Saint-Louis Highway

Senegal has started the construction of a 200-km roadway connecting Dakar to Tivaouane and Saint-Louis. The project’s goal is to increase connectivity in the country’s northern areas and make it easier to harness the region’s mineral and agricultural resources. The government, the World Bank, the Saudi Fund, and the Société Générale banking group are all contributing to the construction. The highway will be critical in trans-African roadways connecting Tanger to Nouakchott, Dakar to Lagos and Alger, and Nouakchott to Dakar.

Renovation of Regional Airports

Following the reopening of the Saint-Louis airport, which now has the infrastructure to receive flights from Europe, the airports of Cap-Skirring, Kolda, Sédhiou, Simenti, Kaolack, Podor, Bakel and Linguère will be upgraded to meet regional development standards and to capitalize on their economic and touristic potential. The makeover will serve to enhance tourism in the country.

The upcoming MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power conference and exhibition – which is organized by Energy Capital & Power and taking place from November 21-22 this year – will further unpack developments underway across Senegal’s infrastructure sector. During the conference, high-level speakers from Senegal including the Minister of Petroleum and Energies Sophie Gladima will provide updates on some of the country’s largest infrastructure and connectivity projects while showcasing future investment opportunities.
H.E. Minister Antonio Oburu Ondo, also serving as the President for OPEC, has joined the Angola Oil & Gas 2023 conference

LUANDA, ANGOLA: Energy Capital & Power (ECP) (https://EnergyCapitalPower.com) is proud to announce that H.E. Antonio Oburu Ondo, Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Mines and Hydrocarbons and the current President of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, will deliver a keynote speech during this year’s Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference (https://apo-opa.info/3PTENZ0) – taking place in Luanda from September 13-14. H.E. Minister Ondo brings a wealth of experience to the conference, having previously served as the Managing Director of the West African country’s National Oil Company (NOC) GEPetrol, and whose participation at the event is set to advance dialogue and deals around Africa’s natural gas prospects.

Equatorial Guinea has been making great strides toward positioning itself as a regional Gas Mega Hub, working closely with a suite of foreign players and regional producers to enhance the monetization of offshore gas resources. Partnerships with the likes of Cameroon, Nigeria, Namibia, and more have not only enabled Equatorial Guinea to increase the amount of gas produced but have advanced local content, regional collaboration, and trade.

Angola’s success in driving exploration through supportive regulation and a reformed NOC serves as a critical lesson for Equatorial Guinea. The Southern African country has managed to kickstart an ambitious upstream campaign despite representing one of the oldest producers in Africa. Working closely with foreign companies and having been restructured into an operator – through a privatization process that is still ongoing – Angola’s NOC Sonangol is spearheading a new era of upstream expansion. As Equatorial Guinea moves to awaken offshore exploration, lessons learned from Angola will be valuable.

“The Angola-Equatorial Guinea partnership offers lucrative benefits for both countries, with bilateral cooperation serving as a key driver of growth for both the West and Southern African regions. We are excited to have H.E. Minister Ondo join the AOG conference as we believe this will be an important platform to strengthen bilateral ties, advance knowledge sharing and skills development while facilitating new deals across both promising markets,” states Stephanie Benjamin, International Conference Director at ECP.

AOG 2023 returns to Luanda for its fourth edition on 13-14 September 2023 under the auspices of the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, H.E. Diamantino Pedro Azevedo, and in partnership with the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency, AIDAC and the African Energy Chamber.
